For jazz musicians, the duo of piano and double bass is a perilous exercise in tightrope-walking, reserved for enthusiasts of extreme refinement, those who like to dance on the edge of abysses. Its alchemy is mysterious. By releasing the account of his brief encounter with John Taylor, Stéphane Kerecki does more than merely delight music-lovers; he proves once again that jazz cannot exist without sometimes flirting with the void.

Manfred Eicher’s strong personal involvement in the production of every album released under his ECM label is well documented. In Stefano Battaglia’s Pelagos, the Munich guru went as far as rearranging the Milanese pianist’s sessions. Combining piano and prepared piano (sometimes simultaneously!), these recordings of original compositions, spontaneous improvisations and traditional Arabic songs were captured both live in a concert venue and during intimate sessions at the Fazioli Concert Hall in Sacile, Italy, in May 2016. Thus in retrospect Eicher rearranged them to − in his own terms −“inject them with a new fantastic form, based on a completely renewed dramaturgy.” The eclecticism of the material, as well as its sheer weight (over two hours and ten minutes of music!) make this a truly impressive work. And the use of the word “dramaturgy” suits it rather well. Regardless, one journeys through Pelagos in one sitting, sometimes being caught off guard by a few twists and surprises. A feeling owed, no doubt, to the founder of ECM. As for Battaglia, he draws from his wide range of influences (Paul Bley, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett) to offer us a rather varied style, in perfect osmosis with the play, of which he is both the author and the main character. A great solo piano album.

The pianist Slava Kantcheff and the percussionist Andreas Keller set new standards with their extraordinary project: “Two Worlds – One Vision”. When the two artists met for the first time, it was immediately clear: Kantcheff & Keller, piano & drums, two musical worlds, have a common vision: Keys & Sticks can play together. With a great deal of imagination and mutual inspiration, Kantcheff & Keller create an incomparable sound in their musical interplay that does not yet exist and harmonise on their instruments until the Grand Final.

Oliva, Rainey, Boisseau are the international trio known as ‘Orbit’. In astronomy, an orbit is the trajectory of a star. In anatomy, it is the cavity of the cranium in which the eye and all its appendages can be found. Perhaps the pianist Stéphan Oliva, the drummer Tom Rainey and the bassist Sébastien Boisseau aim to combine the two into music? Who knows. What is certain, is the trajectory of their impeccably tight – but never bland – jazz. Oliva’s well-renowned impressionist piano, that draws inspiration from the likes of Bill Evans and Lennie Tristano, brings the calm as well as the storm. This cinema fan (he has revisited many film scores) is at one here with rhythms as versatile as himself. The balance is perfect between these three men. Oliva never steals the limelight and each works to refine their lyricism with elegance; rife with unexpected twists and very personal improvisations. – Max Dembo

If going back to the great themes is a rite of passage for most young musicians, in this case the experience entails a particular dimension. First, Shahin Novrasli shows intense creativity, inspired by the music of his homeland. Also, Ahmad Jamal’s production, which provides a telepathic rhythm (thanks to drummer Herlin Riley and double bass player James Cammack), symbolizes a wonderful transition: between two generations of musicians, between two centuries, and also between two continents, the West and the East, all this under the loving gaze of their elders, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. The emotion flowing through this album moves in time to the beating heart of jazz.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 56:38 minutes | 911 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © New Focus Recordings
Composer Eugene O’Brien teams up with Washington D.C. based ensemble The 21st Century Consort, led by conductor Christopher Kendall, for an album of two of his ensemble compositions, Algebra of Night and Elegy to the Spanish Republic. The two pieces both take inspiration from a constellation of sources related to iconic places. Algebra of Nightfor voice and piano quartet sets poetry by six poets who lived in Manhattan at some point and whose work was shaped by the experience of that multi-layered metropolis. Elegy to the Spanish Republic for nine instruments is a “musical addition” to Robert Motherwell’s powerful series of paintings in response to the Spanish Civil War. In both, O’Brien displays his deft, subtle intuition for how to write music that emerges from a pre-existing context while retaining the integrity of both the music and the extra-musical source of inspiration.
