Unsettled by the state of the world in 2020, Charles Lloyd began conceiving of a musical offering in the form of a new studio recording featuring a new band, a quartet that would be a first-time convening of four distinctive voices with the legendary saxophonist joined by pianist Jason Moran, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Brian Blade. In Spring 2023, around Lloyd’s 85th birthday, the project at long last flowered with the creation of an expansive double album titled ‘The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow’. A majestic body of work that finds one of the most significant musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries still at the peak of his powers, the album presents a collection of Lloyd originals new, old, and reimagined.

Charles Lloyd has long been a free spirit, master musician, and visionary. For more than 6 decades the legendary saxophonist and composer has loomed large over the music world, and at 84 years old he remains at the height of his powers and as prolific as ever. As a sound seeker, Lloyd’s restless creativity has perhaps found no greater manifestation than on his latest masterwork Trio of Trios, an expansive project that encompasses three albums, each a deft change of musical context that presents him in a different trio setting.

The third album in the series Trios: Sacred Thread features guitarist Julian Lage and percussionist Zakir Hussain, and was recorded in September 2020 at The Paul Mahder Gallery in Healdsburg, California as a livestream concert for a virtual audience. Past experiences often illuminate the present in Lloyd’ music, for example, the provenance of The Sacred Thread — and the encounters that helped inform it — originated in the late fifties: “When I was studying at the University of Southern California, Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha used to come around. That’s when I heard the call of Mother India,” he recalls. “Zakir and I played together in concert for the first time in 2001, and it was then I learned Alla Rakha was his father, so it has been like that… connections on a journey. You could call it Providence, I call it a Sacred Thread.”

“I first heard young Julian when he was 12,” Lloyd continues. “He grew up not far from Healdsburg and was known to be a wunderkind — he had big ears and I heard his potential. Twenty years later I invited him to join me – he’s still a young man and his ears have only grown bigger. So — I keep being blessed by souls who find a way to me, it still inspires me to go out on the high wire and try to fly.”

Charles Lloyd’s status as one of the iconic figures of jazz has been thoroughly established for nearly five decades. His recordings from the ‘60s – especially releases such as Of Course, Of Course, Dream Weaver and Forest Flower – introduced a stunning, new jazz saxophone talent at a time when new ideas were rapidly being triggered by the likes of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Eric Dolphy. But Lloyd had a voice of his own, one that blended rich, contemplative improvising with an irresistible flow of dynamic rhythms. No wonder Down Beat selected Lloyd as Jazz Artist of the Year in 1967.

This live 1965 recording from New York’s Judson Hall features Lloyd with his previously unreleased quartet of Gábor Szabó, Ron Carter, & Pete La Roca.

This is a must have for Charles Lloyd fans, jazz collectors & audiophiles.

Charles Lloyd has long been a free spirit, master musician, and visionary. For more than six decades the legendary saxophonist and composer has loomed large over the music world, and at 84 years old he remains at the height of his powers and as prolific as ever. Early on Lloyd saw how placing the improvised solo in interesting and original contexts could provoke greater freedom of expression and inspire creativity, and throughout his remarkable career he has searched for alternative ways to frame his improvisational skills. As a sound seeker, Lloyd’s restless creativity has perhaps found no greater manifestation than on his 2022 masterwork, an expansive project that encompasses three albums with an overarching theme, each presenting him in a different trio setting – a Trio of Trios. The first album, ‘Trios: Chapel’, features guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan. The second, ‘Trios: Ocean’, features guitarist Anthony Wilson and pianist Gerald Clayton. ‘The third, Trios: Sacred Thread’, features guitarist Julian Lage and percussionist Zakir Hussain.

Rabo de Nube is a live album by jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd recorded in Basel in 2007 by the Charles Lloyd Quartet featuring Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland.

The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4 stars and states “the band takes a very different approach to some familiar tunes… Ultimately, Rabo de Nube is yet another essential Lloyd offering from ECM. His sense of adventure is greater than ever, and his embrace of the tradition is equaled by his willingness to stretch it, bend it, turn it every which way but break it… Lloyd shows no signs of slowing down or simple contentment as he ages, and we are all the more fortunate for it”.

Listening to a new Charles Lloyd is always a guaranteed ticket on an inspired and spiritual inner journey. Not far off his 80th birthday, the Memphis saxophonist is still ploughing his furrow, never straying from the task or leaving her listeners cold. On stage, the experience takes on an additional aspect. That’s proven on Passin’ Thrurecorded live in summer 2016 on the stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival and at Lensic in Santa Fe alongside her New Quartet which is made up of bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Eric Harland and pianist Jason Moran. This recording was brought out by the label Blue Note and marks this untouchable outfit’s tenth birthday. The menu of this improvised feast includes more recent themes, but older ones too, like Passin’ Thrufor which the record is named and which Lloyd first recorded in 1963 with the Chico Hamilton quintet. The quartet have always played a pretty essential role in the saxophonist’s career. It had its first incarnation in 1965 with Keith Jarrett on the piano, Cecil McBee on the double bass and Jack DeJohnette on the drums. Even if Lloyd would regularly return to this configuration, he considers the present New Quartet to be one of his most accomplished. “From the notes of our first concert, I knew that it was a magical formation.” Ten years later, the closeness and the tenor of the exchanges between the four musicians is intense. Here and there, Charles Lloyd blows up a few storms whose secrets are all his own, and which he plays with a beatific pleasure.

No need to have the same musical tastes to appreciate each other’s cuisine… The proof of this truism can be found in this collaboration between a revered queen of alternative country and a respected old sage of modern jazz: Lucinda Williams and Charles Lloyd, a one-day couple supported by a five-star cast of musicians in which we find guitarist Bill Frisell, pedal steel master Greg Leisz, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland… Both Lloyd and Williams have previously lead a revolution in their respective fields. Here, the duo are celebrating a certain idea of America with an open-minded repertoire. A heterogeneous menu mixing jazz, blues, country and rock’n’roll, with Williams only singing on half of the ten tracks. Vanished Gardensoffer up Jimi Hendrix (Angel) as well as Thelonious Monk (Monk’s Mood) and Roberta Flack (Ballad of The Sad Young Men), though they also include some of their signature dishes (three by Charles Lloyd and four by Lucinda Williams). This is, above all, a refined and profound album; the work of two musicians who know how to digest well decades of music. – Marc Zisman

Jazz legend Charles Lloyd has created a suite of compositions written for a meeting of American, Hungarian and Greek musicians. Featuring Greek lyra player Sokratis Sinopoulos and Miklos Lucacs playing the Hungarian gypsy cimbalom, the suite had its world premiere in November 2013 during the Jazztopad Festival held at the Wroclaw Philharmonic Hall in Wroclaw, Poland, in which the ensemble performed the six movements like a flowing orchestral unit.

Blending traditional jazz elements with visceral sounds and textures from antiquity, Lloyd has created something altogether new and exciting.

Charles Lloyd is a world-renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist, and above all one of the greatest jazz saxophonists in the world. He discovered the talent of Keith Jarrett and godfathered the jazz-rock revolution.

Recorded: Tracks 1 & 2 recorded live at the Monterey Jazz festival on September 18, 1966; Tracks 3 & 4 recorded at Atlantic Recoding Studios, NYC on March 29, 1966; Track 5 recorded live at th Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on January 27, 1967.

This is a powerful and varied set recorded live and in the studio. Charles Lloyd is in top form, and this may be his best quartet ever, which is saying quite a lot.
„The rediscovery of Charles Lloyd is one of the best things to happen to jazz in more than a decade. He is humble and peaceful, yet he experiments without fear. Once again successful and appreciated by the jazz world, he outshines some of the most noted players on today’s scene. His music is a balm to ears grown weary of jazz that is derivative, exclusionary or a passing fad.“ –Roberta Penn, Seattle Post Intelligencer
