North African blues musician Amar Sundy releases new album Hoggar Chicago Paris. Heir to a long line of Tuareg nomads from the Tamanrasset province in southern Algeria, Amar Sundy migrated to France as a child in the early sixties. Barely out of his teens when he settled in Chicago, he toured extensively with Albert King, Albert Collins and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins before moving back to France where he launched his own recording career. With blues still running through his veins, he revisits his African roots in a rich rhythmic and vocal context, filled with bendir drums and female voices.

Matthew Sweet in concert this weekend. Recorded in Chicago at fabled Grant Park on July 4, 1993.
After spending the ’80s as a jangle pop guitarist with Oh-OK and Lloyd Cole, as well as a solo artist, Matthew Sweet emerged in 1991 as the leading figure of the American power pop revival. Like his British counterparts Teenage Fanclub, Sweet adhered to traditional songcraft, yet subverted the form by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock, resulting in an amalgam of the Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., and Neil Young. Recorded with guitarists Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine, Sweet’s third album, Girlfriend (1991), became a word-of-mouth critical and commercial hit over the course of 1992, with its title track reaching the Top Five on the Modern Rock charts. For the next five years, as alternative rock was the dominant commercial force in rock & roll, Sweet became a very popular concert attraction and solidified his reputation as the premiere alternative pop singer/songwriter. His next two records, Altered Beast (1993) and 100% Fun (1995) were both critically acclaimed and successful albums, reaching platinum status and making many year-end best-of lists.

Dead & Company is an American rock band. It formed in 2015 with a lineup of former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir (guitar and vocals), Mickey Hart (drums), and Bill Kreutzmann (drums), along with John Mayer (guitar and vocals), Oteil Burbridge (bass, percussion, and vocals), and Jeff Chimenti (keyboards). Dead & Company primarily perform Grateful Dead covers and is credited with popularizing Grateful Dead music to a younger audience. In 2023 Jay Lane replaced Kreutzmann as the band’s second drummer for their final tour. Their final tour was attended by over 840,000 fans with the final show taking place in San Francisco, the birthplace of the Grateful Dead. A Jackson in Your House is a 1969 album by the Art Ensemble of Chicago recorded for the French BYG Actuel label. It features performances by Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Favors Maghostut. When issued on CD by Affinity in 1989, the track “The Waltz” was replaced by a six-minute live excerpt (of unknown provenance) entitled “Hey Friend” which has never reappeared on any subsequent reissue.
