Recorded prior to his November 2016 death, On a Distant Shore isn’t a strict return to the chintzy, homemade digital productions Leon Russell specialized in prior to his 2010 Elton John-assisted comeback The Union, but it’s a far cry from the warmth of the 2014 solo affair Life Journey. With producer Mark Lambert, Russell favors a clean, crisp sound for On a Distant Shore, one that is in the same ballpark as the endless albums he released in the 2000s. Coming after the burnished The Union and Life Journey, the brightness of On a Distant Shore is a bit jarring, but it enhances the low-key California swing of “This Masquerade” — a song happily in the vein of latter-day Steely Dan — and can work well on a barrelhouse blues, too. When more elements are added into the production, like the backing band and synthesized orchestra on “Just Leaves and Grass,” On a Distant Shore starts to wobble because it’s clear it was done on the cheap. Consequently, the album doesn’t feel as suitable a career capper as Life Journey, but as a coda it’s not bad: it has a few worthy cuts and in its ungainly construction, it holds true to the weirdness of most of Russell’s discography.

A multi-talented, non-binary South African artist (musician, novelist, actor), Nakhane caused a stir in 2019 with the release of You Will Not Die. At the age of 30 they’d only just cut ties with their strict, homophobic Christian upbringing, and the album reflected the violent struggle they’d endured escaping that hell. They’ve since moved to London and embarked on “the simple desire to feel good.” It’s with this serene state of mind that they’ve approached this album. It’s predominantly electronic but incorporates elements of glam rock, soul and traditional music. In many of the tracks on Bastard Jargon, Nakhane pushes hedonism to the forefront, to the point of making it a fully-fledged political statement. In Tell Me Your Politik (Feat. Moonchild Sanelly and Nile Rodgers), they warn, “You can touch me if you want to, but first of all tell me your politik.” However, this overt militancy is counterbalanced with softer tracks such as The Conjecture and Do You Well (feat. Perfume Genius). Listeners will also love the bewitching lyricism of My Ma Was Good and You’ve Got Me. Svante Henryson, the Swedish cellist, composer, double bass and electric bass guitar player, has been awarded the Nordic Council Music Award of some 50’000 Dollars in a ceremony on Iceland. Starting as a double-bass player in the Oslo Phil, he continued as a rock musician in one of Sweden’s more famous hard rock bands, while at all times exploring the classical cello in his own imaginative way, fusing the classical with impulses from other genres.
I have deeply admired him for many years, but only when hearing him and his singing wife Katarina (of Real Group fame) at a private party, had the chance to really approach them with a recording idea. This materialized and the SACD was recentky released.
