Rocking Horse Road is the début recording of Jacqui Dankworth and the Brodsky quartet, bearing witness to a musical relationship that stretches back almost two decades. Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded and celebrated vocalists in the UK. The Sunday Times called her ‘One of our finest singers, regardless of category’, whilst The Guardian noted she ‘exhibits a subtle control of dynamics and a voluptuous tonal richness that seems to make almost any material sound special’. Formed in 1972, the Brodsky Quartet has given more than 3,000 concerts around the world, and recorded more than seventy albums, covering both the core classical repertoire and collaborations with artists from all walks of musical life. This album covers a wide range of material that this partnership has gathered and honed over the years: compositions by Harvey Brough, David Gordon, Charlie Wood, and Jacqui Dankworth herself sit alongside arrangements of songs by Björk, Sting, Diana Krall, and Elvis Costello.

“Stop Time” is the latest album from singer/songwriter Jon Regen, his first for Motéma Records. Fresh but at times bittersweet, Regen’s style blends elements of Randy Newman, Elton John, and Billy Joel into a sound that is entirely his own, and in this collaboration with producer Mitchell Froom the pianist has created a varied album that swings and grooves. Produced by Mitchell Froom (Crowded House, Paul McCartney), and featuring Davey Faragher and Pete Thomas from Elvis Costello and the Imposters, STOP TIME finds Regen at the peak of his songwriting and pianistic powers, with ten original tunes that brim with humor and heart. In the words of storied Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, “‘Stop Time’ never stops pleasing the ears”.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Decca (UMO)

Life Love Flesh Blood is the fifth studio album recorded by Irish singer Imelda May. It was released on 7 April 2017, through Decca Records, as a follow-up to Tribal (2014). May collaborated with American musician T Bone Burnett on the record, who was the sole producer on the album. Throughout the creative process, May received guidance from U2 vocalist Bono. The album followed May’s divorce from guitarist Darrel Higham, which influenced many of the lyrical themes featured on the record. Life Love Flesh Blood features soft rock and acoustic styles, which differed significantly from her previous rockabilly genre.[1][2]

Commercially, the album peaked at number two on the Irish Albums Chart (IRMA), prevented from reaching number one by Ed Sheeran’s album ÷. The album reached number one on the UK americana chart, where it remained for three weeks, even preventing the hugely successful Chris Stapleton from topping the chart with his latest release From A Room: Volume 1. Three singles have been released from the album: “Call Me”, “Black Tears”, and “Should’ve Been You”. The album also features guest appearances by pianist Jools Holland and guitarist Jeff Beck. May is scheduled to embark on an international tour in May 2017, in support of the album.

“My Soul Kitchen” is Ida Sand’s clearest declaration yet of her love of “sweet soul music”, and is also a demonstration of her deep affinity for it. Together with the Stockholm Underground band Sand has cooked a ‘hot soul casserole’. There are songs by soul greats such as Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and The Meters, which are completely at one with both Ida Sand’s own tunes and with her soulful interpretations of the music of artists like John Fogerty and Mike Shapiro.

After two mildly successful, vaguely new-wave albums, Bay Area bar band Huey Lewis and the News (several of whose members had backed Elvis Costello on MY AIM IS TRUE) hooked up with mega-selling producer Mike Chapman and released 1983’s SPORTS. The album dominated both AM and FM radio throughout 1984, aligning it with THRILLER, PURPLE RAIN, SHE’S SO UNUSUAL, and Madonna’s early singles as definitive pop music of its era. SPORTS is genial frat-boy rock at its finest. Singles ‘The Heart of Rock and Roll,’ ‘Heart and Soul,’ ‘I Want a New Drug,’ and ‘If This is It’ comprise half of the album, and these songs have stood up to repeated listens. Hearing SPORTS today, the album still sounds surprisingly fresh, all the more remarkable when one considers how poorly other hits of the day have fared.

Herb Alpert – Human Nature (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Herb Alpert – Human Nature (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 30:50 minutes | 345 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Herb Alpert Presents

Legendary pop and jazz icon Herb Alpert continues his prolific career run with his 2016 studio album, Human Nature. The album follows up his well-received 2014 effort, In the Mood, and picks up on that album’s mix of electronic pop and Latin-inflected, dance-oriented grooves. In his eighties at the time of recording, he has aged into a soulful, lyrical musician able to bridge the light pop stylings of his youth with more introspective choices. Human Nature finds him completely engaged, continuing to explore new sounds and songs. Joining Alpert here are several longtime collaborators in producer/percussionist Michael Shapiro, producer/arranger/keyboardist Eduardo Del Barrio, bassist/guitarist Hussain Jiffry, keyboardist/arranger/producer Bill Cantos, and others. As with Alpert’s other albums since coming out of a ten-year hiatus in 2009, Human Nature finds the trumpeter applying his distinctively sweet-toned sound to a nicely balanced combination of beloved pop standards, unexpected covers, and originals. Sometimes, as on the title track, an inspired Brazilian Mardi Gras-infused reworking of Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature,” Alpert goes for an inventive cross-genre angle. Other times, as on his lush, romantic reading of the Burt Bacharach/Elvis Costello-ballad “Look Up Again,” he takes a more straightforward approach, framing his yearning Miles Davis-esque lines with reverb-soaked piano and shimmering orchestral strings. Alpert even draws upon his iconic Tijuana Brass double-tracked trumpet sound for a bright, electro-Latin take on the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which also features vocals from his wife, muse, and frequent collaborator Lani Hall. Elsewhere, Alpert strikes a similarly pleasant, cross-genre stance with his originals, like the disco-salsa “Shake It” and the sophisticated, cocktail hour-ready Latin jazz of “Mystery Man.” Ultimately, Human Nature is a warmly produced album by an artist who has seen and done it all, and yet still finds magic and mystery in the process. –AllMusic Review by Matt Collar

At the close of the ’70s, Hall & Oates began inching toward a sleek, modern sound, partially inspired by the thriving punk and new wave scene and partially inspired by Daryl Hall’s solo debut, Sacred Songs, a surprising and successful collaboration with art rock legend Robert Fripp. While 1979’s X-Static found the duo sketching out this pop/soul/new wave fusion, it didn’t come into fruition until 1980’s Voices, which was their creative and commercial breakthrough. Essentially, Voices unveils the version of Hall & Oates that made them the most successful duo in pop history, the version that ruled the charts for the first half of the ’80s. During the ’70s, Hall & Oates drifted from folky singer/songwriters to blue-eyed soulmen, with the emphasis shifting on each record. On Voices, they place their pop craftsmanship front and center, and their production (assisted by engineer/mixer Neil Kernon) is clean, spacious, sleek, and stylish, clearly inspired by new wave yet melodic and polished enough for the mainstream. Thanks to the singles “Kiss on My List” and “You Make My Dreams” (and, to a lesser extent, their remake of the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and the original version of the heartbreaking ballad “Everytime You Go Away,” later popularized by Paul Young), the mainstream enthusiastically embraced Hall & Oates, and the ubiquitousness of these hits obscures the odder, edgier elements of Voices, whether it’s the rushed, paranoid “United State,” tense “Gotta Lotta Nerve (Perfect Perfect),” the superb Elvis Costello-styled “Big Kids,” the postmodern doo wop tribute “Diddy Doo Wop (I Hear the Voices),” or even John Oates’ goofy “Africa.” Apart from the latter, these are the foundation of the album, the proof that the duo wasn’t merely a stellar singles act, but expert craftsmen as writers and record-makers. The next few albums were bigger hits, but they topped the charts on the momentum created by Voices, and it still stands as one of their great records.

Graham Parker & The Rumour – Mystery Glue (2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 47:47 minutes | 577 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © UMC (Universal Music Catalogue)

Mystery Glue from Graham Parker and the Rumour was written in Parker’s second home of New York and recorded in only six days in London. The material is a real return to form for Parker and his powerhouse band, one of the UK’s pioneering pre-punk outfits, often cited as a major influence on other artists including Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Paul Weller and Bruce Springsteen. Mystery Glue, featuring the Rumour’s original 1970s lineup, is an album of conscious rock, harking back to Parker’s genre-defining music of the ’70s while paying homage to Dylan, reggae, soul and rock ‘n’ roll.

“When Swiss astrophysicist Fritz Zwicky described dark matter in the 1930s, he got the name wrong. It is of course ‘mystery glue’ that holds the universe together … when I present new songs to the Rumour they work feverishly to make sense of them, often starting out with wildly disparate and alarmingly wrong diversions. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, everything falls into place, as if by dint of some Mystery Glue that holds us all together.” –Graham Parker

The original leaders of Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, were well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock’s most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project Gov’t Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers’ influence was apparent but complicated with the psychedelic, bluesy power trio feel of Cream.
Gov’t Mule debuted in 1995 with a self-titled album on Capricorn Records, followed by the stellar concert date Live at Roseland Ballroom. The studio follow-up, Dose, appeared in early 1998; another concert set, Live…with a Little Help from Our Friends, followed a year later, with the complete show appearing as a four-disc limited-edition set. A new studio effort, Life Before Insanity, appeared in early 2000. A vital member of the band was lost, however, on August 26, 2000, when Woody was found dead in a hotel room in New York City. The band had been preparing to record its next album, and after a time, Gov’t Mule finally decided to carry on with the project, this time with guest bassists ranging from Flea to Bootsy Collins. The two-volume Deep End series for ATO Records resulted. Phish bassist Mike Gordon also got involved in the project, filming the recording of the albums for a planned documentary. In mid-September 2001, the group hit the road for a six-week tour in support of Deep End, Vol. 1; Oteil Burbridge filled in as bassist for most of the dates.
