Watertown is a later album by Frank Sinatra and tells a heartbreaking story in a series of soliloquies. It is the only album on which Sinatra sang over pre-recorded instrumental tracks. The songs were written by producer Bob Gaudio (of The Four Seasons) and Jake Holmes. Some of the songs from the album were later covered by artists such as Nina Simone (“For A While”) and Cake (“What’s Now Is Now”).

100 songs celebrating 100 years

For the first time ever, all of Frank Sinatra’s important recordings from three different record labels (Columbia, Capitol and Reprise) have been remastered and compiled in one collection, released in 2015 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sinatra’s birth. This digital four-disc set contains 100 songs in chronological order plus a previously unreleased rehearsal version of The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, recorded in 1979.

This first collection of Sinatra’s singles and B-sides with Nelson Riddle is also the best one. The album kicks off with the irrepressible ‘I’ve Got the World on a String’ and features such essential tracks as ‘South of the Border,’ ‘The Gal That Got Away,’ ‘Learnin’ the Blues,’ and the movie themes ‘Three Coins in a Fountain,’ ‘Young at Heart,’ and ‘The Tender Trap.’ ‘Rain’ and ‘Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me’ are dark ballads good enough to be on one of Sinatra’s ‘wrist-slasher’ LPs, and display a depth that many of his singles lack.

The shimmering romantic ballad ‘My One and Only Love’ is one of the few original Sinatra singles that instantly became a much-covered standard, though interestingly, the song isn’t usually connected to him. However, this wouldn’t be a Sinatra singles session if there weren’t at least a couple of losers on the set, and ‘Love and Marriage’ and ‘From Here to Eternity’ are two well-sung numbers that don’t deserve their continued popularity.“ (Nick Dedina)

If there’s one thing the career of Frank Sinatra has shown, it’s that great taste is indeed timeless. In the post-Beatles Sixties, it had begun to look like Sinatra’s star was falling. The revitalized world of rock music knocked Sinatra’s style of popular song squarely out of the box in terms of public interest. The level of Sinatra’s artistry, however, never diminished during this period, and it wasn’t long before he made his commercial comeback with “Strangers In The Night”.

Powered by the monster hit that was the title song, this album conveyed the image of a successful artist feeling his oats, as they say. With soulmate Nelson Riddle grasping the conductor’s baton, Sinatra turned in a bouncy, invigorating set of tunes that smacked of a newfound maturity but sacrificed none of his youthful verve. The bold, swinging ‘Summer Wind’ remains a testament to Sinatra’s interpretive powers and infectious enthusiasm for a well-written song.

Sinatra–Basie: An Historic Musical First (a.k.a. Sinatra-Basie) is a 1962 studio album by Frank Sinatra, arranged by Neal Hefti.

This was the first recording that Sinatra made with the Count Basie Orchestra. In 1964, Sinatra and Basie would make a final studio recording, It Might as Well Be Swing, orchestrated by Quincy Jones, and Sinatra’s first live album, Sinatra at the Sands (1966) would feature the Basie band.

Sinatra appeared on an episode of The Dinah Shore Show that aired on December 9, 1962, the day before Sinatra-Basie was released, and performed the album’s arrangement of “Please Be Kind”.

She Shot Me Down is Frank Sinatra’s last great album, a dark, brooding record of saloon songs delivered with an understated authority by Sinatra. Arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins and produced by Don Costa, the record largely consists of contemporary material, including five that were basically tailored for Sinatra. It’s a dense, moody record that works spectacularly — Sinatra’s vocals are more alive and rich in detail than on Trilogy, and the concept is more concise and well-executed.
