The music on this album is the result of decades of research and many lecture-recitals performed across the US, with publication of a book of scores bearing the same title. We do not pretend to know whether Shakespeare the playwright played the lute — or whether the historical figure of Shakespeare the playwright existed at all. But we know that the plays were a collaborative effort written and produced in concert with several of the best literary and musical figures of the Elizabethan/Jacobean age, and indication for music in Shakespeare plays was as ubiquitous as any other stage direction. Much of the music appearing in the plays is of a lighter character, suitable for capering and jollification in an outdoor theater. But the historical music Mignarda chooses is typically of a more complex nature, and was likely performed in an indoor theater where subtlety and nuance, an essential characteristic of music for voice and lute, might actually be heard. Our approach is to convey the texts with understanding, choosing historical musical settings when they survive, but employing informed choices of historical style and convention when the original setting is lost to history.

SACD-ISO PS3 Rip to FLAC 2.0 | 24 bit / 88,2 kHz | 41:35 minutes | Scans included | 872 MB

By 1979’s Reggatta de Blanc (translation: White Reggae), nonstop touring had sharpened the Police’s original blend of reggae-rock to perfection, resulting in breakthrough success. Containing a pair of massive hit singles — the inspirational anthem “Message in a Bottle” and the spacious “Walking on the Moon” — the album also signaled a change in the band’s sound. Whereas their debut got its point across with raw, energetic performances, Reggatta de Blanc was much more polished production-wise and fully developed from a songwriting standpoint. While vigorous rockers did crop up from time to time (“It’s Alright for You,” “Deathwish,” “No Time This Time,” and the Grammy-winning instrumental title track), the material was overall much more sedate than the debut — “Bring on the Night,” “The Bed’s Too Big Without You,” and “Does Everyone Stare.” Also included was one of Stewart Copeland’s two lead vocal appearances on a Police album, the witty “On Any Other Day,” as well as one of the band’s most eerie tracks, “Contact.” With Reggatta de Blanc, many picked Sting and company to be the superstar band of the ’80s, and the Police would prove them correct on the band’s next release.

This Mortal Coil – Filigree & Shadow (Remastered) (1986/2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:14:24 minutes | 1,47 GB | Genre: Modern Classical, Ambient
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © 4AD

The second album by the 4AD collective headed by label founder Ivo Watts-Russell distills the This Mortal Coil concept somewhat. There’s more of a core group now, featuring Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins, producer John Fryer, arranger Martin McCarrick, and Watts-Russell himself, backing a variety of mostly female singers. The double album is nearly half instrumentals (all of them given the traditional 4AD treatment of layers of echo, reverb, and phasing), most of which are pleasant enough but not particularly memorable. The vocal tracks, however, continue the debut’s trend of intriguing versions of fascinatingly obscure covers, ranging from Pearls Before Swine’s mysteriously beautiful “The Jeweller” (with Scott Walker-like vocals by Dominic Appleton) and Tim Buckley’s “I Must Have Been Blind” (sung by Richenel, apparently from the bottom of a very deep well) to Talking Heads’ “Drugs” (with a fiery, soulful vocal by Alison Limerick over a harsh, thumping rhythm track) and Colin Newman’s “Alone,” each of them reinterpreted in the unique This Mortal Coil style. Less focused than It’ll End in Tears, Filigree & Shadow is an uneven but often inspired follow-up. by Stewart Mason

While essentially a vanity project for composer/producer/arranger Thomas Stewart, backed here by a cadre of “Hot ‘Lanta” session players, The Burning of Atlanta is nevertheless an excellent funk LP that boasts the panoramic scope of a classic blaxploitation soundtrack. With the vocals embedded deep in the mix, the emphasis lies squarely on the record’s intensely hypnotic grooves most of the tracks extend past the five-minute mark, with the epic “Messin’ Around” clocking in at nearly twice that total. Stewart’s dramatic melodies also boast a sheen recalling Curtis Mayfield’s classic Superfly and just in case you couldn’t place the reference, there’s even an answer song: “Freddie’s Alive and Well.”

Half Speed ReMasters HiRes Re-Issue: Dirty Work is the Rolling Stones’ 18th British and 20th American studio album. It was released on 24 March 1986 on the Rolling Stones label by CBS Records. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the album was recorded during a period when relations between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards soured considerably, according to Richards’ autobiography Life.

The album was recorded during a time of turmoil for the band, as the two principal songwriters, Richards and Jagger, had been feuding over the band’s direction for most of the 1980s. Almost all of the band members had spent the previous several years working on solo albums or side projects. Other band members, including guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Charlie Watts, and bassist Bill Wyman, were often absent from the studio during recording sessions; it was rare that all five principal members were together at the same time.
