Issued mere months after the death of Donny Hathaway, this 1980 album was the second full-length collaboration between Roberta Flack and the troubled soul singer/pianist. Although the record is arguably eclipsed by Flack and Hathaway’s initial duet outing in ’72, it features a number of outstanding tracks, including the disco-tinged, Stevie Wonder-penned ‘You Are My Heaven’ and the funky ‘Back Together Again,’ the uplifting theme song to their well-received reunion.

This local landmark is the home of soul legend Ural Thomas, built by hand with found materials decades ago. The basement is overflowing with musical equipment. When you walk down into the room you may see Portland’s Soul Brother Number One at the table chuckling, telling stories and jokes, and espousing his personal humanist philosophy obtained from 82 years of unfathomable experiences. He’s often joined by either his generations of biological posterity or the adopted family that is his band, The Pain. You may also find this infinitely magnetic personality ripping through a cover song at full volume or working out a new original with his loved ones.

Everything’s Beautiful brings Miles Davis’ sound into the 21st century, blending a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across Miles’ incredible tenure with Columbia Records (1955-1985) with original reinterpretations. Robert Glasper produced the collaboration. “I didn’t want to do just a remix record,” Glasper noted when discussing the 11-song set. “My idea was to show how Miles inspired people to make new art”. Knowing that “Miles didn’t have one audience,” Glasper recruited a legion of diverse guest artists to add to the magic of the project including familiar collaborators like R&B musicians Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Bilal and KING. They are joined by British soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula; hip-hop producer Rashad Smith; Grammy-nominated Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, rapper/producer Illa J; jazz guitarist John Scofield, who collaborated with Davis; and the legendary Stevie Wonder.

“The Weekend” is Nicholas Cole third album and features label mate guitarist Chieli Minucci on the soothing lead off single “Soulmate”. My “summer song” of 2019 captivates you with its hypnotic intro of synth, Chieli’s licks and a impressive drumbeat. The combination of smooth beats and acoustic guitar makes another appearance on the track ‘Should’ve Been Us’ with guitarist Kay-ta Mutsano and his Peter White sounding riffs. American Idol fifth season finalist Elliott Yamin delivers an outstanding performance on Michael Jackson’s ‘P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)’ and new upcoming singer Satyr Black (check out her version of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ on Soundcloud) contributes her Janet Jackson sounding vocals to the opening ‘Recall’. His influences range from Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire and contemps like keyboardist Brian Culbertson. Nicholas openly admits to the influence of keyboardist Brian Culbertson on his releases with Brian’s style of irresistible melodies and song structure that are both uplifting and spiritual. Nicholas once said “I really wanted to write and play music that came from the heart. God gave me the gift to play, and so naturally I write and play music that comes from a very spiritual place as if it’s put on my heart and I am given the opportunity to express it. There is a deep connection between jazz and gospel and while the album is predominantly a contemporary jazz project, I incorporate a lot of gospel riffs and chord progressions”. Spend a weekend with Nicholas Cole and you’ll find yourself pressing play again and again.

A collection of his favourite songs of freedom: Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” sits alongside hits from Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton and the Beatles, whose “Eleanor Rigby” and “Come Together” frame the album. The French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê proves, like no other musician, that globalisation doesn’t always have to mean cultural homogenisation but that it can also create something new with its own quality. Since he became the first exclusive ACT artist in 1993, after “Jazzpana”, he has developed, fully in the sense of the equally cosmopolitan thinking label founder Siggi Loch, to become a great ‘music ethnologist’ in jazz. There is hardly any music region with its styles, characteristics and exceptional representatives which has not awakened his interest and which he hasn’t transformed into one of his ever self-enclosed cultural puzzles. Particularly on the four ACT albums released so far with the enchanting singer Huong Thanh, he has dedicated himself to Vietnamese stories as well as Far Eastern sounds (“Saiyuki”, ACT 9483-2) and the Maghreb (“Maghreb & Friends”, ACT 9261-2) and, in the pioneering Trio E_L_B with Peter Erskine and Michel Benita, he reinterpreted the classic trio format in jazz.

Having stumbled with Primitive, Diamond attempted, with Headed for the Future, to re-establish himself as a contemporary artist, co-writing with Stevie Wonder, recording songs by Bryan Adams and Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, and employing nine producers and nine recording studios. The result was a slight upturn in sales and Diamond’s last singles-chart entry with the title track. But the album was also overblown and unfocused, record-making by committee, and Neil Diamond as an individual artist was getting lost in the process.

Soundway reissues the vocal and instrumental versions of ‘If I Love You’, from G.C. Cameron, the lead singer of the legendary soul group The Spinners. The release also includes two unreleased recordings from the same session – ‘Live for Love’ and ‘Thank You Baby’.

Hailing from McCall Creek, Mississippi, G.C. Cameron rose to fame at 22 years of age, when he joined Motown Records to become lead singer of The Spinners. After a string of well received releases, including chartbuster ‘It’s A Shame’, co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder, Cameron left The Spinners to pursue a solo career.

It was a trip to Fantasy Studios, San Francisco in 1977, where Cameron teamed up with Harvey Faqua, Greg Crockett and Elgie Stover to realise what is arguably his finest work. A full album was recorded, but only two tracks saw the light of day, via the short-lived UK label, Flamingo.

Nathan East’s newest release “Reverence” is the second solo release from Nathan. Artists on this latest release include: Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Phillip Bailey and Yolanda Adams to name a few. This release features a cover of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Serpentine Fire,” which was originally recorded with East’s brother Marcel in 1991 with Eric Clapton on guitar and Phil Collins on drums. Moogie, East’s longtime engineer, who mixed the original cinematic cover, discovered the track 25 years later, and after a long search for the tapes, finally uncovered them in Patti Austin’s basement. After the tape was digitally remastered, the three Earth, Wind & Fire members sang (Philip Bailey), played additional bass parts (Verdine White), and added percussion (Ralph Johnson) to the track, resulting in a daring, head-turning, cinematic journey. As a founding member of renowned contemporary jazz quartet Fourplay, Nathan East is one of the world’s most recorded session bassists. With over 2,000 album credits to his name and several GRAMMY-winning songs including “Get Lucky,” “Footloose” and “Change the World,” East has performed with artists including Daft Punk, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston & Beyonce. He received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for his self-titled solo debut ‘Nathan East’ on March 2014 which hit #1 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz Albums chart and held #1 for a record-breaking 36 weeks on SmoothJazz.com.

Detroit’s always had a special place in the heart of My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Nova. A pivotal album for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, 1989’s Mother’s Milk turned the tide and transformed the band from underground funk-rocking rappers to mainstream bad boys with seemingly very little effort. Mother’s Milk brought them to MTV, scored them a deal with Warner Bros., and let both frontman Anthony Kiedis and the ubiquitous Flea get back into a good groove following the death of co-founding member Hillel Slovak. With a new lineup coalescing around the remaining duo plus new drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante, and with producer Michael Beinhorn again behind the boards, the band took everything that The Uplift Mofo Party Plan hinted at, and brought it fully to bear for this new venture. If anyone doubted the pulsating power of the opener, “Good Time Boys,” it took only a few bars of band’s outrageous and brilliant interpretation of the Stevie Wonder classic “Higher Ground” to prove that this new lineup was onto something special. Wrapping up with the aptly titled and truly punked-out “Punk Rock Classic” and the band’s own punched-up tribute to “Magic Johnson,” Mother’s Milk was everything the band had hoped for, and a little more besides. Effortlessly going gold as “Knock Me Down” and “Taste the Pain” careened into the charts, the album not only set the stage for the band’s Blood Sugar Sex Magic domination, it also proved that funk never died; it had just swapped skins.
