On THE PURPLE TOUR (LIVE), Whitesnake puts their distinctive spin on several songs from Coverdale’s studio albums with Deep Purple — Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974), and Come Taste The Band (1975). Highlights include: “You Fool No One,” “The Gypsy” and “Soldier Of Fortune.” The double-disc collection also includes video footage of the concert mixed to 5.1 Surround Sound, plus a new music video for “Burn,” band interviews, and a number of bonus performances not available on the CD or vinyl versions. The Whitesnake line-up that appears on THE PURPLE TOUR (LIVE) includes: singer David Coverdale, guitarists Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra, bassist Michael Devin, drummer Tommy Aldridge and keyboardist Michele Luppi. Coverdale says there was never any intention to compete against the original recordings. “We just wanted to play the damn songs…Each member of the band…brought their incredible individual talents and a real band identity to this music. “River Deep – Mountain High” is a single by Ike & Tina Turner released on Philles Records in 1966. It was considered by producer Phil Spector to be his best work. Rolling Stone ranked “River Deep – Mountain High” No. 33 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. NME ranked it No. 37 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame added it to the list of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
The single did not perform well upon its original release in the US, but it was successful in Europe. Spector claimed to be pleased with the response from the critics and his peers, but he then withdrew from the music industry for two years, beginning his personal decline. After a revival of the song from covers by Eric Burdon and the Animals and Deep Purple in 1968, the original version was reissued by A&M Records in 1969.

Earl Grant (January 20, 1931 – June 10, 1970) was an American pianist, organist, and vocalist popular in the 1950s and 1960s.
Grant was born in Idabel, Oklahoma. Though he would be known later for his keyboards and vocals, Grant also played trumpet and drums. Grant attended four music schools, eventually becoming a music teacher. He augmented his income by performing in clubs during his army service, throughout which he was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas.
Grant signed with Decca Records in 1957 and his first single “The End” reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts on October 13, 1958. The album Ebb Tide (And Other Instrumental Favorites) sold over one million copies, gaining gold disc status. He recorded six more singles that made the charts, including “Swingin’ Gently” (from Beyond the Reef), and six additional albums (on the Decca label) through 1968. He also recorded the album Yes Sirree! and the instrumental album Trade Winds, single-tracked on the Hammond organ and piano, featuring the love theme from the film El Cid and Chaplin’s “Eternally”. This album featured some realistic-sounding “tropical bird calls” produced by his electric organ. “House of Bamboo” was another big-selling single. Grant recorded 30 albums for Decca, mostly on the Brunswick label, a subsidiary of Decca.

These Danes are not to be trusted: Freddy And The Phantoms is the name of the band – sounds like Schmalztolle, petticoat and old rock’n’roll from the name. On the promo photos, however, the quartet does one on country: stetson, beards, fringed jackets. And then they also title their – already sixth – album HEATHEN GOSPELS. Pagan church chants, freely translated. But the confusion only really gets around, you can hear it in the record: because there is nothing to be found out about the good, old rock’n’roll, rather little about country and certainly nothing about gospel. Instead, the mischievous Danes bite serves up plenty of bluesy rock, mixed according to the old recipe. Because an organ is the most striking instrument in the arrangement next to the guitar, Freddy And The Phantoms are always reminiscent of deep purple – right in the opener “Heart Is A Highway” and even more so in the bone-dry “Blues Trap”. If it’s like with “Blood” on a country course, you quickly feel reminded of Jon Bon Jovi’s 90s hit “Blaze Of Glory”. Not bad, but very old-fashioned – and a bit too good.

It all goes back to year 1965. Spencer Davis Group was recording a single for the label Phillips Germany after having released its number one hit “Keep on Running”. Alongside the guitarist and a former German teacher Spencer Davis, Steve Winwood and his older brother Muff also the upcoming drummer Pete York was a member of the band. The producer of the session was Siggi Loch. “We’ve been friends ever since”, Pete York, who turned 70 in August, reminisces. “Maybe it is Siggi’s birthday present that I got the chance to release this album on ACT”.
