The organ music on this album is written by three composers with different musical backgrounds and development who nevertheless have something of the same close feeling for the instrument, almost an organic oneness with it. Trygve Madsen studied with organist-composer Egil Hovland, one of the 20th century’s most significant pioneers in the field of church music. Kjell Mørk Karlsen grew up in a rich church music milieu, inspired by his father, Rolf Karlsen, who was Oslo cathedral organist for over fifteen years. Kjell Flem studied piano and organ, gaining a close knowledge of the organ’s technical and musical possibilities. While Karlsen’s music builds on the long German-Lutheran tradition, the more playful style of Madsen is closer to that of the French organ symphony. Kjell Flem’s main inspiration has been the music of Olivier Messiaen, evident both in his compositional technique and in his interest in using musical impulses from more exotic parts of the world. However, for all the differences in their approaches and backgrounds, none of these composers have repudiated tonality as their musical foundation. While German organ music continued to adhere to the Lutheran chorale tradition, organ music in France began to see the organ as much more than a liturgical instrument. It is true that French organist-composers felt their roots lay in the melodious plainsong of the Gregorian chant, but, exploiting huge advances in organ-building, they managed during the 19th century to free themselves from the liturgical context and to demonstrate that the organ could match a symphony orchestra in its range of colours and fullness of sound.

Terje Winge (born 1950) is Professor of Organ at the Norwegian Academy of Music, where he has taught since the early 1980s. He received his own organ education from the Norwegian organists Ludvig Nielsen and Arild Sandvold, before studying with Jiri Reinberger in Prague and Gaston Litaize in Paris.

Amongst a plethora of musical styles and genres extant during the mid-18th century, the music of Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) finds a special place. Despite a quintessential expressive style of performance and embellishment, he was to become and remain influential across the known musical world, and his legacy was essential to violin playing for at least the next century. Tartini’s obscure writings about Nature and music reveal a close relationship to widespread ideas of a time that was to become known as The Age of Reason. However, these came with a twist: his 135 violin concertos and 200 sonatas, of which many are rarely performed today, still appear enigmatic – impalpable and mysterious. The sonorous Hardanger fiddle, an ideal instrument for imitating the traditional Italian bagpipes, appears in this recording as a tribute to the composer’s frequent use of traditional folk music motifs. Artistically breathtaking and engagingly intimate, the vocal music of the early Italian Baroque was an exercise in close artistic collaboration. Bringing together three of the most renowned practitioners of historically-appropriate performance of Early Music and Baroque repertoires, the Sono Luminus release of Io Vidi in Terra provides a rare immersion into a mysterious world that, despite its relative obscurity in the perspectives of 21st-Century observers, shaped almost every aspect of music as it blossomed in subsequent generations. The package will be a 2-disc set, containing a Pure Audio Blu-ray™ Surround Sound disc as well as a standard CD.
Born in Brazil, countertenor José Lemos pursued musical studies in the United States, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the College of Charleston (South Carolina) and a Master’s Degree in Opera Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Awarded Tanglewood Music Fellowships in both 2003 and 2004, his first operatic performances in the United States were in Robert Zuidam’s Rage d’Amours and Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Tanglewood. He also won both the First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2003 International Baroque Singing Competition in Chimay, Belgium. From those beginnings, José’s operatic career has flourished with lauded appearances at Opernhaus Zürich as Nireno in Händel’s Giulio Cesare and Narcisco in the same composer’s Agrippina, both under the baton of Marc Minkowski; an extensive tour with Stefano Landi’s Il Sant’Alessio in a production with Les Arts Florissants and William Christie, to name just a few.
Mr. Lemos has recorded multiple albums with Dorian/Sono Luminus over the years. With Baltimore Consort, he recorded Adío España (DSL-90901), a recital of music from Spain’s Age of Discovery. Additionally, he recordedRomance (DSL-90708) and Sol y Luna (DSL-92118) with Brio, featuring the exotic music of Sephardic Jews in Spain. José is thrilled to share his passion for the Italian vocal music of the 17th Century with friends and frequent collaborators Deborah Fox, theorbist and baroque guitarist, and GRAMMY®nominated harpsichordist Jory Vinikour, as well as with listeners throughout the world. A landmark release in prog rock history, The Alan Parsons Project’s debut album, Tales Of Mystery And Imagination, remains not only one of the most ambitious releases from prog’s mid-70s golden age, but also one of the finest examples of a musician putting literature to music.
Released in 1976, Tales Of Mystery And Imagination saw Alan Parsons and long-time collaborator Eric Woolfson bring to life some of the most enduring works by pioneering gothic poet and short-story writer Edgar Allan Poe. Working with a host of musicians, among them legendary God Of Hellfire, Arthur Brown, Hollies singer and guitarist Terry Sylvester, the bands Ambrosia and Pilot, plus keyboardist Francis Monkman (of cult 70s outfit Curved Air), they also managed to snag narration by legendary actor, director, writer and producer Orson Welles – a man with no little experience in bringing works of literature to life in the studio.
For its 40th anniversary, Tales… is being celebrated with a multi-disc box set, made with the full co-operation of Alan Parsons and the family of the late Eric Woolfson. As well as boasting over 70 minutes’ worth of previously unreleased bonus material, the 3CD+Blu-ray+2LP box set also includes the original 1976 album mix (half-speed mastered for vinyl at Abbey Road by leading half-speed mastering expert Miles Showell), Alan Parsons’ 1987 remix, and, for the first time ever, a high-definition 5.1 surround sound mix on Blu-ray, mastered in 2016 by Parsons himself. Rounded out with a 60-page coffee-table book boasting rare photos and new interviews, a poster, replica 1976 press kit and “taped man” sticker, this lavish package does full justice to the legacy of Parsons’ and Woolfson’s stunning work.
“The Tales album is my favourite,” Alan Parsons says today. “Always has been, always will be. It broke new territory all round.” (more…)

Valery Gergiev, Wiener Philharmoniker – Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.6 in B minor ‘Pathétique’, Op.74 (2005/2014) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

Valery Gergiev, Wiener Philharmoniker – Tchaikovsky: Symphony No.6 in B minor ‘Pathétique’, Op.74 (2005/2014)
Blu-Ray: LPCM 2.0 24bit/96kHz | DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 & Dolby TrueHD Audio 2.0 24bit/96kHz | No Art | 4,86 GB

Far more than the Tchaikovsky Fourth and Fifth that Decca recorded live with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Gergiev’s Pathetique bids fair to be considered one of the great ones.

Little more than a decade into his international career, Valery Gergiev is being described as “the greatest living conductor.” But is he? Let us compare Gergiev’s new recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 with the Vienna Philharmonic and his earlier recording of the same work with the Kirov Orchestra. The new recording is faster, as much as two minutes faster in the outer movements. But it’s not better, no, it’s not at all better. Gergiev’s current interpretation of the Sixth is not only too fast — too fast in the opening movement’s development, too fast in the Allegro molto vivace’s climax, and fatally too fast in the Finale’s Adagio lamentoso — it is too much — too much in its excessive brilliance, too much in its linear intensity, too much in its dramatic exaggerations, and too much in its emotional pathos. In his earlier recording, Gergiev created a performance of sublime despair. In this recording, Gergiev chews the scenery. It doesn’t help that the Vienna Philharmonic now plays with nothing more than its customary virtuosity while the Kirov Orchestra then played with astounding virtuosity and complete dedication. While Philips’ sound now is almost supernaturally present, Philips’ then was preternaturally warm and real. So is Gergiev now the greatest living conductor? The argument could not be made by the evidence of this recording. But was Gergiev then the greatest living conductor? On the evidence of the earlier recording, the argument could be made. (more…)
