Recorded at the Ambassador Hotel’s Coconut Grove nightclub in Los Angeles, Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night is a marvelous concert celebrating one of the most popular music singers of the 20th century. Joined on stage by a number of well known musicians – Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, T Bone Burnett, J D Souther, James Burton, Tom Waits, Steven Soles, Jennifer Warnes, K.D. Lang, Jackson Browne, Jerry Scheff, Ron Tutt, Steven Soles, and Glen Hardin – Roy Orbison performed seventeen of his greatest hits, including “Dream Baby”, Blu Bayou”, “Candyman”, “Go, Go, Go (Down The Line)” and “Oh Pretty Woman”.
Clocking in at a little over 60 min, the concert was filmed specifically for Cable TV (it was first broadcast on HBO on January 3rd, 1988). Directed by Tony Mitchell and edited by T Bone Burnett (also contributing as a musical director), this was also an event proving that Orbison was admired by everyone, from casual fans to fellow musicians and singers.
What really impresses in Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night, however, are the fantastic improvisations courtesy of Orbison and his guests. Switching between blues, rock, and even country music, these remarkable musicians deliver once in a lifetime show where the atmosphere is simply impossible to describe with simple words (all you need to do is see how Kris Kristofferson and a few of the other spectators in the Coconut Grove react to the music to know exactly what I mean).
The actual concert is also notably well filmed. Tony Mitchell’s camera provides a terrific view of the stage, the supporting musicians and singers as well as the enthusiastic audience constantly applauding Orbison and his guests. Finally, the concert also reveals an unusually stylish look that certainly enhances tremendously the sense of nostalgia Orbison’s singing evokes.

I have always been astounded that so many beginning musicians begin their musical explorations on the guitar. Despite being an at least competent pianist, I have never been able to master the fretboard technique to really be able to eke out even the most basic chords on the guitar. I blame my somewhat stubby fingers for this inability, but of course my more musically astute colleagues point out that I have no problem voicing extremely complex chords on the piano with those same stubby fingers. Perhaps it’s the more “graph like” quality of voicing items on the guitar that throws me off, or something endemic to actual guitar technique. I might have had better luck had I adopted Stanley Jordan’s innovative, almost keyboard-esque, approach: instead of using his left hand to finger notes and his right hand to strum, Jordan exploits the “tapping” technique where he uses both hands to play the fretboard almost like a pianist percussively presses the keys. Surprisingly, Jordan’s approach doesn’t result in an overly staccato sound, and in fact there are beautifully sustained legato passages in a lot of Jordan’s work. This 2007 Paris concert, part of in-Akustik’s New Morning (a Paris nightclub) Blu-ray series, finds the guitarist and his ace band in fine form as they move through both originals and standards.

Classical music as a genre and those who perform it as a career are not usually thought of as harbingers of the new and innovative. Long the refuge of established repertoire and long frozen tradition, the world of classical music often has, rightly or wrongly, the slightly musty smell of a museum about it. And so what are fans of classical music to make of Lang Lang, a Chinese born piano prodigy who not only Tweets, updates his Facebook wall regularly, and now has entered the 3D Blu-ray fray (at least partially) with his first Sony release Lang Lang Live in Vienna? The torch has obviously been passed to a new generation of classical artist, and if the music is still the same, the individual interpreting it is most definitely a new sort of presence, one who embraces the latest technology and wants that technology to work for the greater dissemination of the music itself. Lang Lang moved to the United States when he was 15, and is a product of the vaunted Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he was mentored by Gary Graffman. Possessing a febrile technique which can make his hands virtually a blur at times—even in hi-def—Lang Lang is also a modernist in the best sense, a kid at heart who is obviously excited to be recording for Sony and to be touring to some of the most awe inspiring venues in the world, including in this instance Vienna’s incredible Musikverein, a gold-laden concert hall where the artist is literally surrounded by the audience. It’s instructive to note that Lang Lang chose a completely different venue for the 3D portion of this Blu-ray (included as an extra), the hipper than hip Berghain Club in Berlin. Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl directs this documentary about Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios which specialised in analog recording. Following the closure of the studio in 2011 due to the growing demand for digital recording, Grohl assembled a number of artists, including Josh Homme, Trent Reznor, Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks, to give interviews and performances while contributing to the creation of a new album.
