Skeletons & Majesties Live is a live recording of the band’s performance at the legendary Z7 in Pratteln, Switzerland on April 29th, 2011.
Gamma Ray have long been considered a metal band full of surprises which may be one of the reasons why their fan base continues to flourish. Spring 2011 saw the four musicians embark on a club tour through Germany and Switzerland, expanding on the concept of their exceptional EP Skeletons & Majesties (new versions of songs which didn’t receive the attention they deserve, as well as unplugged versions of some of our classics) on stage. The band’s aficionados know that Gamma Ray is guaranteed to deliver yet another full frontal assault on the senses.
Riddled with behind the scenes footage and exclusive interviews, this live release contains the last shows the guys played with drummer Daniel which makes it a nice farewell to Daniel but also marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band. /
Before she collapsed from an overdose in The Rose, turned the tables on her kidnappers in Ruthless People, got even with her ex in The First Wives Club and sold all those Beaches albums, she was first and foremost the Divine Miss M., who perfected her act belting tunes and cracking X-rated jokes to the patrons of gay bathhouses. But the lady could sing, and when someone finally wised up and put her on vinyl (still vinyl; it was 1972), her multi-tracked rendition of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, with that incomparable voice covering for all three Andrews Sisters, topped the charts. Thirty-six years later, the stage may be bigger — they don’t come much bigger than the The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas — the sequins are more plentiful, the backing orchestra is certainly more polished, the accompanying dancers (a trio of Staggering Harletts and an even larger retinue of Caesar Salad Girls) are far more coordinated, but the essential Bette Midler is unchanged. “Salty songs and dirty jokes put my daughter through private school!” she tells the crowd. “I’ve been telling these jokes for forty years . . . and you’ve been laughing at ’em for forty years” — for which the People’s Diva gives her sincere thanks.

The concert film ‘A Strange Hour In Budapest’ was presented during 2010 & 2011 in 52 cities across the world as part of the ‘Selected Events’ tour to celebrate 25 years of Alan Wilder’s solo project RECOIL. As an antidote to the demands of DEPECHE MODE, his studio project RECOIL was born in the mid-eighties. Two albums were released before he left DEPECHE MODE in 1995. He has since released ‘Unsound Methods’ (1997), ‘Liquid’ (2000) ‘subHuman’ (2007) and ‘Selected’ (2010) and worked with a varied selection of vocalists.

There probably isn’t a rock guitarist alive who hasn’t been influenced in some way by the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. It’s an all the more astonishing phenomenon when you consider that Hendrix shuffled off this mortal coil over 40 years ago. But Hendrix was such a trailblazer that his impact wasn’t lessened by his untimely demise, but was actually augmented by the attention that early death brought and the then immediate reevaluation it brought the guitarist’s achievements, a reevaluation which in turn burnished his reputation and has led subsequent generations to virtually deify a man who singlehandedly rewrote the vocabulary for rock guitar. The past several months or so have seen some really great Hendrix related Blu-rays come to market, including Jimi Hendrix: Jimi Plays Berkeley and Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child (two releases which joined The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live at Monterey and Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock, which both appeared in 2008), and now comes this “homage” concert which finds the late Irish guitarist Gary Moore recreating several Hendrix classics. (Moore, like Hendrix, died at an unexpectedly relatively young age—not quite as young as Hendrix—from substance abuse issues, in this case alcohol rather than drugs.)
