Freedom, fraternity and humanity – this is what Beethoven’s 9th Symphony stands for. It opens the 10th Grafenegg Festival, performed by the Tonkunstler Orchestra, joined by 24 alumni of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) and “a soloist quartet which no one could possibly imagine to be more prestigious” (Die Presse). “Vogt’s tenor and the Wiener Singverein were especially moving” (Wiener Zeitung) and “the vocal performance by excellent bass René Pape, the fabulous soprano Camilla Nylund and the brilliant mezzosoprano Elena Zhidkova … in Beethoven’s Ninth was just sensational. Bravo!” (Kurier). Composer in Residence Christian Jost’s new work also centres around Beethoven, featuring the song “An die Hoffnung” (“To Hope”), and “convincingly used an impressive orchestra” (Der Standard), with “tenor Klaus Florian Vogt as a well-cast soloist” (Salzburger Nachrichten).   Judas Priest perform live in front 80,000 people at the legendary Wacken Festival. The band put on an incendiary production mixing some of their biggest hits with acclaimed new material. This blu ray disc features 90 minutes of performance and extra bonus content.
Originally formed during the early ’70s in Birmingham, England, Priest is responsible for offering metal fans worldwide some of the genre’s most influential and landmark albums (1980’s ‘British Steel,’ 1982’s ‘Screaming for Vengeance,’ 1990’s ‘Painkiller,’ etc.), while helping spread metal music to audiences not normally associated with the genre (Live Aid in 1985, and a surprise appearance on American Idol in 2011), and helping popularize the now instantly recognizable “denim and leather” look.
For decades, Judas Priest has been one of the greatest live bands in the entire heavy metal genre. And as evidenced by Battle Cry, Priest rock harder and more ferociously than ever. (more…)

Before Woodstock and Monterey Pop, there was Festival. From 1963 through 1966, Murray Lerner visited the annual Newport Folk Festival to document a thriving, idealistic musical movement as it reached its peak as a popular phenomenon. Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, the Staple Singers, Pete Seeger, Son House, and Peter, Paul and Mary were just a few of the legends who shared the stage at Newport, treating audiences to a range of folk music that encompassed the genre’s roots in blues, country, and gospel as well as its newer flirtations with rock and roll. Shooting in gorgeous black and white, Lerner juxtaposes performances with snapshot interviews with artists and their fans, weaving footage from four years of the festival into an intimate record of a pivotal time in music—and in American culture at large.
• New, restored 2K digital transfer, approved by director Murray Lerner
• New reconstruction and remastering of the soundtrack from the original concert and field recordings, approved by Lerner
• Making “Festival,” a new program featuring Lerner, associate editor Alan Heim, and assistant editor Gordon Quinn

The 23-year-old Gioachino Rossini completed his masterpiece Il barbiere di Siviglia with incredible speed – legend has it in just 13 days – which Rossini attributed to ‘facility and lots of instinct’. He adapted Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais’ play Le Barbier de Séville, part of a dramatic trilogy that also inspired Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Within a few decades of its 1816 premiere, Il barbiere di Siviglia had been seen around the world, reaching opera houses in New York, Buenos Aires, Trinidad and Ecuador. The opera is characterized by youthful energy and bold wit: these qualities are brought to the fore in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s colourful and inventive production, a popular favourite at the Royal Opera House since its premiere in 2005.

Il barbiere di Siviglia has all the right ingredients for comic chaos: an imprisoned young woman, her lecherous guardian and a young noble suitor. Skilfully plotting behind the scenes is Figaro – an irrepressible and inventive character in whom many have seen a resemblance to the young Rossini himself. The score fizzes with musical brilliance, from Figaro’s famous entrance aria ‘Largo al factotum’ to the frenzy of the Act I finale, when the five principal voices all pile on top of each other.

• On June 9, 2010, the legendary Les Paul would have celebrated his 95th birthday. To honor his memory, Jeff Beck and a host of special guests, amongst them Imelda May, Gary U.S. Bonds, Brian Setzer and Trombone Shorty, took the stage of New York City’s Iridium Jazz Club and performed a selection of rock classics. They chose the Iridium because Paul played there every week for years.
• The performances are great, filled with terrific energy and passion, and though as usual Beck shines, the star of the night is May. She delivers top-notch renditions of “Poor Boy”, “Cry Me A River”, “My Baby Left Me”, “High High The Moon”, “The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise”, and “Vaya Con Dios” amongst others.
• The entire show has a fantastic period feel. Obviously, the music has a lot to do with it, but the hair styles, the clothes, and the musicians’ attitude are also right. I’ve seen a lot of tributes where various stars would gather to honor one of their own, but many of them would lack chemistry. This is certainly not the case here – the entire show is about chemistry (see “Please Mr. Jailer” and “The Girl Can’t Help It”).

Beck set the stage ablaze with incredible live versions of “For Your Love”, “Beck’s Bolero”, “’Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers”, “Big Block”, “Over Under Sideways Down”, “A Day In The Life”, “Blue Wind”, and more. Over the course of Beck’s illustrious 50-year career, the trailblazing guitarist has earned many accolades. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and he has earned a total of 8 Grammy Awards during his long career. In November of 2007, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck took on the stage of London’s Ronnie Scott’s, a notorious jazz club with a rich history. Unfortunately, given the size of the venue, only a few were lucky enough to see him and his band – Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards) and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass) – perform.

This Blu-ray disc offers twenty one songs that were played by Beck and his band throughout the course of the concert. They cover a variety of genres including rock, jazz, blues, fusion, and even rockabilly. To the delight of the audience, during a few of the songs, Beck was also joined by Joss Stone, Imogen Heap as well as his former Yardbird’s bandmate Eric Clapton

What truly impresses in this show is the musical versatility Beck and his band showcase. They easily skip through a number of different genres that have been a key part of their music throughout the years (interestingly enough, even though Beck has been performing with Vinnie Colaiuta and Jason Robello for only a few years now, they very much sound as if they have been together for a very, very long time). Unsurprisingly, from the moody Pink Floyd-esque Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers (with a fantastic solo by Tal Wilkenfeld) to the to the funky Led Boots, to the classic People Get Ready with Joss Stone , to the terrific new arrangement of Blnaket with Imogen Heap, to the outstanding Little Brown Bird and You Need Love with Eric Clapton, this concert offers a little bit of everything for everyone.

Live In Tokyo was filmed at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Japan on April 9th this year. These Japanese dates were the first to feature Jeff Beck s new backing band of Jonathan Joseph (drums), Nicolas Meier (guitars) and Rhonda Smith (bass) and the setlist includes some material from his new, as yet unreleased, studio album. The ceremony recognizes the best recordings, compositions and artists of the eligibility year, which ran from October 1, 2016 to September 30, 2017.
