The soldier Wozzeck (Christian Gerhaher) flits through a world that he is unable to decipher. The doctor torments him with absurd medical experiments; the captain humiliates and ridicules him. And Wozzeck’s lover, Marie (Gun-Brit Barkmin), with whom he has a child, cuckolds him with the drum major. Wozzeck becomes a murderer, stabbing Marie to death. Georg Büchner’s drama fragment, on which Alban Berg based his first opera, is an unflinching case study of social injustice and human suffering. But it is also a grotesque piece that thrives on exaggeration – and in which only a fine line separates the unfathomable from the ridiculous. Accordingly, director Andreas Homoki forgoes all realism.

His nightmarishly radical production is inspired by puppet theatre. Christian Gerhaher’s role début as Wozzeck can only be described as sensational: his capacity for vocal and dramatic subtlety is simply breath-taking. At the rostrum of the Philharmonia Zurich, Fabio Luisi explores both the expressionistic and the more intimate aspects, reminiscent of chamber music, in Berg’s seminal (more…)

The Rolling Stones Olé Olé Olé!: A Trip Across Latin America is a feature documentary that follows the Rolling Stones’ tour of early 2016 through 10 Latin American cities. The film combines electrifying live performances from across the tour and from their historic tour finale as the first ever rock band to perform to an audience of 1.2 million in Havana, with an intimate insight into the world of The Rolling Stones. A road movie that celebrates the revolutionary power of Rock n Roll, exhilarating and vivid, the film chronicles the tour, local culture and unique bond that exists between the Latin American people and The Rolling Stones. A portrait of a band still at the very top of their game that have seen it all but remain as hungry as ever to break new ground. Directed by Paul Dugdale, produced by Sam Bridger and shot throughout February and March 2016, the film is produced by JA Digital in co-production with Eagle Rock Films for Eagle Rock Entertainment and Promotone . The documentary captures blistering performances and unique personal experiences as the band visited Latin America for the first time in ten years. True pioneers of rock, the Stones, who have toured every corner of the globe, explored new horizons bringing their high octane performances to countries Uruguay, Peru and Colombia and the city of Porto Alegre, and of course, Cuba, for the very first time. Fans will see Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood mesmerize their generations of fans with full performances of classic hits from their extraordinary catalog such as, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll”, “Wild Horses”, “Honky Tonk Women”, “Sympathy For The Devil”, “Paint It Black” and “Miss You”. Throughout the film viewers will hear personal stories and insights from the band on their chemistry, what it is like to tour and perform for tens of thousands of adoring fans, and memories and influences of these cities over the past 50 years. The 105 minute film, kicks off at the bands tour rehearsal’s in Los Angeles, before they embark on the 2 month tour. The band immerses in the local cultures of these cities and the viewer learns about each destination’s influence on the band and how the Rolling Stones impacted the cities and its people. In Argentina the Rolingo superfan culture is examined; in Uruguay the group visits a family of local drummers and jams with them; in Brazil, Mick and Keith fondly recall writing “Honky Tonk Women” in a ranch hours outside of Sao Paulo in the 1960’s and tell stories before sitting down to play an acoustic rendition of the hit song; also in Sao Paolo Ronnie paints with a Brazilian friend Ivald Granato and discusses the importance of art in his life; in Lima the band watches Afro Peruvian dancers perform before joining in with them; and in Cuba we learn the stories of a Cuban mechanic and instrument repair woman, who discuss the positive changes coming to the island. Throughout the film the viewer gets an inside look at the interworking of the creation of the historic Cuba show, through interviews with the tour promoter, management, production and logistics managers, and the band members themselves. Classical music lovers all over the world will know her name: violinist Isabelle van Keulen is a soloist who, for many years now, has built a strong career worldwide. She plays with all the important orchestra’s, performs in the famous concert halls and keeps on recording extraordinary CD’s of a very high level. Take for instance her latest release of December 2012 with music of Prokofiev together with her duo partner Ronald Brautigam. But now she dares to do something totally different! She wanted to do this for many years and now her dream can come true to play and record the music of Astor Piazzolla. This music she has loved since she was a child of six years old. With her new ensemble she also plays in concert halls and she recorded this beloved tango music on SACD and on film (on DVD and Bluray) in January 2013 in mechelen (Belgium). In a bonus documentary that goes with the BluRay, Isabelle and her colleagues Ulrike Payer, Christian Gerber and Rudiger Ludwig tell about this music, about the tango technique and about their instruments. This not only gives us insight in Piazzolla himself but also tells more about the typical tango sound and how this is produced and why, according to the musicians, this music is so moving and goes straight to the heart! Franz Schubert´s “Winterreise” engages with its audience in a new and unexpected form: in a creative encounter with Schubert’s masterpiece. Matthias Goerne, ”the voice of perfection” (Le Figaro), pianist Markus Hinterhäuser and South African director, set designer and theatre artist William Kentridge joined forces on stage and traced newly imagined, deeply moving images. In short animated films, Kentridge visualises Goerne’s and Hinterhäuser’s sonic contribution. A memorable meeting “of melancholy and magic.” (La Marseillaise). “Mr. Kentridge’s 24 stop-action films – made up of animated ink drawings and collages – offer a visually mesmerizing and thought-provoking commentary on Schubert’s song cycle.” (New York Times). “There is an unusual robustness to Matthias Goerne´s wanderer, infused by the virile beauty of his powerful baritone.” (New York Times) (more…)

With his seven symphonies the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius marks a high point in the symphonic repertoire of the 20th century. The music evokes the ghostliness of the Finnish landscape, carries an inner strength and depth and proves itself full of technical fi nesse that still poses a challenge for both conductors and performers. For Sibelius “a symphony is not a ‘composition’ in the ordinary sense. Rather, it is a declaration of faith at different stages of one’s life.”

On the occasion of Jean Sibelius’ 150th birthday this DVD edition offers the live recordings of the composer’s seven symphonies by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in the new Helsinki Music Centre under the direction of Hannu Lintu. Each symphony is preceded by a documentary and an introduction, giving a new and modern perspective to the legendary Finnish composer and his symphonies.

Special Features:
SORT OF SIBELIUS! 8 Fictional Short Documentaries

“Sort of Sibelius!” gives a different perspective on Jean Sibelius. The focus is not on the music, but on the person. The genre is fictional short documentary with both acted drama and animation tricks. The commentator is Kaija Saariaho, a composer herself. Other interviewees are experts from various fields of life; a doctor, a couples therapist, a wine connoisseur and a wilderness guide to name a few.

Introductions for each symphony. These documentary sections of the programs, hosted and narrated by Hannu Lintu, the conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, can also been seen in an hourlong separate program.

A detailed book about Sibelius’ life and work.

Summary: The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world. The festival is best known for its contemporary music, but also features dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and many other arts. For 2005, the enclosed area of the festival was over 900 acres (3.6 km²), had over 385 live performances and was attended by around 150,000 people. While the villagers of Pilton have been complaining about the noise generated during the weekend for many years, in 2007 over 700 acts played on over 80 stages. Glastonbury was heavily influenced by hippie ethics and the free festival movement in the 1970s, especially the Isle of Wight Festival. Organiser Michael Eavis stated that he decided to host the first festival, then called Pilton Festival, after seeing an open air Led Zeppelin concert in 1970.
