Umphrey’s McGee – Live from the Tabernacle, Atlanta, GA 12/31/12 – Night 4 of 4 (2012) Blu-ray 1080p AVC DD 5.1

Umphrey’s McGee capped out their four-night run in Atlanta’s famous Tabernacle with an incredible three-set New Year’s Eve show. In set one, Joel and Jake effortlessly nailed the piano and guitar sections of Allman Brothers classic “Jessica.” “Hajimemeshite” was dedicated to a fan who flew all the way from Japan for the New Year’s run, illustrating that the fans will pull out all the stops to catch a stand out performance by Umphrey’s. Stasik dedicated the cover of a personal favorite, Wang Chung’s hit “Dance Hall Days,” to his wife Mary Welch. Mad Dog’s Filthy Little Secret horn section added a rich, full sound to the band throughout the night and Waful’s gyroscopic lighting illuminated the venue’s famous pipe organ. Umphrey’s McGee rang in the new year with “Auld Lang Syne” and invited wives and family members on stage to share this momentous occasion with friends and fans alike. The blowout show received rave reviews instantly, with fans swearing the band has never been tighter and their performances have never been better. Umphrey’s McGee truly set the stage for an incredible 2013!

Umphrey’s McGee – Live from the Tabernacle, Atlanta, GA 12/30/12 – Night 3 of 4 (2012) Blu-ray 1080p AVC DD 5.1

By night three of their four-night New Year’s run, Umphrey’s McGee had already blown the roof off Atlanta’s Tabernacle Theater, leaving fans wondering how they could go any further. In the tradition of Umphrey’s McGee however, they took everything up to the next level. Intense performances of “Depth Charge” and “JaJunk” had the venue pulsating. The band, the massive lighting by Waful, and the ecstatic fans were in perfect unison from shredding rock to ethereal jams, never skipping a beat. The set two opener that rolled from “Bright Lights, Big City” into “Cocaine” and back to “Bright Lights” is a one for the record books. The band was joined by saxophonist Jeff Coffin for an incredible “Night Nurse.” During the “In The Kitchen” encore, in anticipation of one more enormous night, Brendan changed the lyrics to ask the crowd if they’d “all come back tomorrow?” The roar of applause was his answer.

Umphrey’s McGee – Live from the Tabernacle, Atlanta, GA 12/28/12 – Night 1 of 4 (2012) Blu-ray 1080p AVC DD 5.1

Umphrey’s McGee headed to Atlanta for their first ever four-night New Year’s celebration at the legendary Tabernacle. Fans lined up around the block and sported “Umph Love” stickers as the excitement rose to a fever pitch. The band started their New Year’s run with the debut of “Auf Wiedersehen” before dropping into the UM classic “Professor Wormbog.” Arms were celebrating in unison as the band dominated the venue from the organ pipes to the depths of the upper balcony. The second set opened with a gritty rendition of “Phil’s Farm” containing a monstrous Jimmy Stewart, the name of the band’s famous improvised performances. As a standalone, this show is incredible. The fact that this was only the first of a four-night run is something else entirely! Rage. Rest. Repeat.

The Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter (2009) Blu-ray 1080p AVC DTS-HD MA5.1

• This musical documentary concerns the Rolling Stones and their tragic free concert at Altamont Speedway near San Francisco in early December 1969. The event was all but destroyed by violence that marked the end of the peace and love euphoria of the 1960s. The night began smoothly, with the supercharged Flying Burrito Brothers opening up for the Rolling Stones and performing the truck-driving classic “Six Days on the Road” and Tina Turner giving a sensually charged performance. But on this particular evening, the Stones made the fateful (and disastrous) decision to hire the Oakland chapter of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang as bodyguards and bouncers. It was a foolhardy, careless choice that turned the night into an unmitigated disaster; halfway through the Stones’ act, the Angels killed one black spectator, and injured several others who were present (including Jefferson Airplane’s lead singer Marty Balin). In the film, we watch Mick Jagger — ere an ebullient, charismatic performer of bisexual charm — reduced to standing on stage like a frightened child with his finger in his mouth in wake of the violence. Unsurprisingly, the Grateful Dead refused to perform after the violence erupted; the picture ends on a despairing note, with the Stones repeatedly watching a film of the murder. Celebrated documentarians Albert and David Maysles directed and Haskell Wexler shot the film, with heightened instinct and control; as a result, this film is considered one of the greatest rock documentaries ever made. Stones songs performed include “Brown Sugar,” “Under My Thumb,” and “Sympathy for the Devil.” –Dan Pavlides

• A dark counterpoint to the lovefest of the film Woodstock, this documentary about the Rolling Stones’ 1969 American concert tour centers on the hallucinatory nightmare of the Altamont Music Festival. The free rock concert attracted 300,000 fans. The Stones hired members of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang to conduct security, but the gang ended up implicated in a fan riot which left one person dead. Cinematographer Haskell Wexler’s tremendous camera work captures the connections between The Stones’ hypnotic and provocative music and the drug-addled frenzy of the crowd. Directors David Maysles and Al Maysles take a hands-off approach, and the result is a disturbing look at the hellish side of the 1960s rock & roll counterculture. Gimme Shelter is one of the most gripping concert films ever made, and one of the very few to examine the dangerous interplay between performers and live audiences. –Michael Betzold

Charles Lloyd – Arrows Into Infinity (2014) Blu-ray MPEG-2 DD 2.0

Arrows Into Infinity chronicles the arc of an improvisers still-unfolding life, moving through time with memories, archive footage and music, lots of music. Charles Lloyds story is a special one, and it intersects with important moments in jazz history.
Lloyd grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and had early contact both to masters of an increasingly sophisticated jazz tradition and the raw voices of the blues. Booker Little was a childhood friend, Phineas Newborn a mentor. In his teens Lloyd hit the road with Howlin Wolf. He befriended Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry and Billy Higgins in a period when blueprints for musical freedom were redrawn, and replaced Eric Dolphy in Chico Hamiltons band, soon building a reputation as an exceptional saxophonist and a composer of strikingly original melodies.
His own groups drew together some of the most exciting players of the day, and his late 60s quartet with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette made an impact at many levels, playing opposite Hendrix and Janis Joplin at the Fillmore Auditorium, touring Europes festivals to great acclaim, making a now-legendary foray into the Soviet Union, and selling a million copies of their Forest Flower album, a massive FM radio hit.
Then Charles Lloyd retreated from the limelight, preferring to play his flute in the mountain forests of Big Sur. For almost two decades sightings of him in jazz contexts were rare. A tentative return to public service was made in the company of pianist Michel Petrucciani; the 1989 ECM recording Fish Out Of Water, with Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen signaled a new beginning. Since then Lloyd has led a succession of outstanding bands including the recent quartet with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland and the Sangam trio with Harland and Zakir Hussain. These musicians contribute their thoughts about Charles Lloyds work to this remarkable documentary as do Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, Robbie Robertson, Jack DeJohnette, Don Was, John Densmore, Jim Keltner, Geri Allen, Larry Grenadier, Alicia Hall Moran, Stanley Crouch, Manfred Eicher, Michael Cuscuna, Arthur Monroe and Ayuko Babu.
Arrows Into Infinity is available in DVD and Blu-ray formats. Running time 113 minutes. Subtitles in German, French, Spanish, Italian.
