Janusz Wawrowski, Jurgis Karnavičius, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Christopher Lyndon-Gee – Valentin Silvestrov: Widmung & Postludium for Piano & Orchestra (2024)

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Naxos
Valentin Silvestrov, Ukraine’s leading composer, currently lives in exile in Berlin. His life in the late-Soviet period was harsh and included expulsion from the Composers’ Union which led to his withdrawal from participation in public life. This album brings together the two superlative works of Silvestrov’s early maturity. Postludium for Piano and Orchestra is yearning and dissonant, embodying the atmosphere of a lament, but without nostalgia, cast in a style full of ambiguity and allusion. The Symphony for Violin and Orchestra ‘Widmung’ is another melancholy, mystic work, a homage to the human spirit and life-force, but also, through hard-won lyricism, to love, hope and renewal.

For his new album, Zero-2-Sixty, Ellison wanted to strip things down and deliver a juke-joint-rockin’ blues set to deepen the groove laid down in his #1 blues radio album, There’s Something About the Night. His searing guitar and soul-drenched vocals make for a potent statement: respect for the tradition and a view to the future. Over the course of 12 tracks, Scott evokes the best of the Midwest blues sound, a sort of Chicago-meets-Texas-meets-Oklahoma boogie to a full-tilt rockin’ blues workout, plus a heaping measure of pure soul and a roots-driven authenticity that can’t be faked.

The Fall Guy is our favorite kind of movie – it’s a love story not only between the film’s two leads, but also a love letter to cinema. Its also a love letter to the people who risk their lives to tell us stories. That it’s scored like a stadium rock anthem also helps. Dominic Lewis’ has produced a soundtrack that makes you want to stand up and cheer in the theater, but also one that you’ll also want to blast at full volume at home.

This recording presents brand new concertos from two vibrant and contrasting American composers. Adolphus Hailstork’s First Piano Concerto draws on his African American heritage to create a work brimming with energy and high spirits, reflecting the rich traditions of jazz and blues. The Violin Concerto “Eleven Eleven” by Danny Elfman – renowned for his many film scores – has its roots in the composer’s rock, film and television background, but also illustrates his love for the music of Shostakovich and Prokofiev. In keeping with his famous Batman score, this work is a true violin concerto noir that is both haunting and compelling.
