Groovy is an album by jazz pianist Red Garland and his trio, released in 1957 on Prestige Records.

In his review on AllMusic, Michael G. Nastos states: “Red Garland’s third recording as a leader has him playing very well, somewhat energetic and more inclusive in his direction to span the mainstream jazz palate beyond the cool exterior he emanates. The title might be a bit deceptive, for this is not a project where soul-jazz or early boogaloo influences turned jazzmen into groovemeisters – it’s a swinging groove. … It is said that by the third recording, most musicians should have their style down pat and begin attempting to take the music to a higher level. You really hear that in this recording, which was a springboard to making Red Garland one of the most revered and respected jazz pianists of the modern era.”

Hunting for rhythm, as if our lives depended on it, as if, without rhythm, we’d starve to death. Can body and soul live without rhythm? Seizing its different forms, dissecting it, ingesting it, digesting it, could very well be akin to the Rhythm Hunters’ creative process. What are the rhythmic principles that lead us to develop its polyphonic, groovy and trance-like aspects (Africa), or mathematically complex ones (India), or irregular pulsations that transcend asperities (Balkans), among others? To go on a rhythm hunt, why not explore all these places, appreciate the infinite diversity of rhythms and, back home, try to understand and experiment with enriching your own rhythmic vocabulary with the basic principles underlying each musical tradition. What can these principles contribute if you transcend borders and begin to adapt your musical knowledge and experience to the new ramifications of the rhythm you’ve just discovered? The music of The Rhythm Hunters is one of the answers.

A few years ago, the musicians in this band and I began a specific practice on unusual mixes of rhythmic ideas, inspired by traditions from various parts of the world, with the intention of integrating them until they became a personal vocabulary and means of expression. The result is on this album.

Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters by Stephane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters, released 26 April 2024, includes the following tracks: “Positivv “, “Artemis” and more.

“The perfect casting” wrote Opera Magazine about Jakub Józef Orlinski’s interpretation of Orfeo in San Francisco. The Polish countertenor is tailor-made for the character of the mythical singer. Orfeo quickly developed into one of his signature roles, which Jakub Józef Orlinski has embodied in various productions around the world. Now the countertenor himself is releasing a recording of Gluck’s Orfeo & Euridice – as producer, casting director, artistic co-director (alongside conductor Stefan Plewniak) and, of course, interpreter of the main role.

“One of my big dreams as a student was the role of Orfeo,” confesses Jakub Józef Orlinski, “when I read the myth for the first time, my imagination went crazy, I saw images like those of Hieronymus Bosch before my eyes.” Performances in other people’s productions strengthened the singer’s desire to realize his very own vision of the myth: “It’s not easy to take on such a famous musical work. But I had a clear vision of what I wanted to do with it and how I would realize it”.

For his dream cast, Jakub Józef Orlinski recruited the young sopranos Elsa Dreisig as Euridice and Fatma Said as Amore, both winners of the OPUS KLASSIK. The original sound ensemble Il Giardino d’Amore will accompany them under the direction of Stefan Plewniak. The conductor has been Jakub Józef Orlinski’s “partner in crime” for many years.

Annie Clark made her recorded debut as St. Vincent in 2007 with ‘Marry Me’, quickly becoming regarded as one of the most innovative and fascinating presences in modern music. Following a 2021-2022 global tour that reaffirmed St. Vincent’s status as one of live music’s preeminent forces with headline appearances at the likes of the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall, Clark would begin work on album number seven: Her first fully self-produced album (having co-produced every one of her previous efforts). ‘All Born Screaming’ is St. Vincent at her most primal. Featuring Clark leading ‘a curated group of rippers’ through the brawny ‘Broken Man’, the mordant catwalk sashay through the deafening assault of self-loathing that is ‘Big Time Nothing’, the sublime, elegiac earworm ‘Sweetest Fruit’, ‘All Born Screaming’ is equal parts spiritual desolation and rapturous acceptance.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in B♭ minor, Op. 23, was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between November 1874 and February 1875. It was revised in 1879 and in 1888. It was first performed on October 25, 1875, in Boston by Hans von Bülow after Tchaikovsky’s desired pianist, Nikolai Rubinstein, criticised the piece. Rubinstein later withdrew his criticism and became a fervent champion of the work. It is one of the most popular of Tchaikovsky’s compositions and among the best known of all piano concerti.

The Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, also known as the Pathétique Symphony, is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s final completed symphony, written between February and the end of August 1893. The composer entitled the work “The Passionate Symphony”, employing a Russian word, Патетическая (Pateticheskaya), meaning “passionate” or “emotional”, which was then translated into French as pathétique, meaning “solemn” or “emotive”.

Reaching the highest level of prominence as both pianist and conductor, Mikhail Pletnev is a major figure on the contemporary Russian musical scene. He is also a prolific composer and a competent amateur violinist.

Pletnev was born on April 14, 1957, in Archangelsk in the far north of what was then the Soviet Union. His family was musical; his father played and taught the bayan button accordion, and his mother was a pianist. When the family moved to Kazan in Russia’s Tatarstan region, Pletnev began piano studies with Julia Shaskin. He moved to Moscow at 13 to study at the Moscow Central Music School with Evgeny Timakin, and a Grand Prix at the Jeunesses Musicales International in 1945 proved to be the first in a long series of prizes for the young pianist. At 15, Pletnev moved to the Moscow Conservatory for studies with Yakov Flier, whose teaching propelled him to gold medals in two of the Soviet Union’s toughest events, the All-Union Competition in 1977 and the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978. Pletnev launched a touring career that went fully international as restrictions on Soviet musicians loosened in the 1980s. His fluent, elegant style was sometimes likened to those of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and even Vladimir Horowitz. He made his recording debut in 1988 on the Virgin Classics label with Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in F sharp minor, Op. 1, and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, with the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Maria Chiara Argiro’s album Closer departs from her prior work, fuelled by an indescribable, dreamlike feeling – the album’s core duality of blurred lines and clarity reflects Argiro’s philosophy – A philosophy encapsulated in the urgency of her production process and the unique lucidity with which she weaves ambient, dance, jazz, and experimental pop seamlessly together The album defies easy definition, emphasising an inner self-discovery process, detached from external influences, not only breaking sonic ground but signifying a deeply personal journey, anchoring Argiro to her creation.

Poulenc the miniaturist par excellence burst into public view, fully-formed in his late teens, emerging flamboyantly into the artistic swirl of 1920s Paris. His fabulously inventive, quirky and colourful approach to writing for chamber ensemble and voice comes vividly to life in this set of early works which capture all of his youthful elegance, wit, and occasionally sardonic humour.

Many of these early masterpieces are now well-known in their incarnations for piano; but his sheer inventiveness and joyful revelry in a kaleidoscopic riot of instrumental colour is celebrated here in the earliest versions of such classics as Le Bestiaire and Cocardes, alongside masterpieces more cruelly treated by his contemporaries, the Quatre Poemes de Max Jacob and Le Gendarme Incompris.
