We are honored to present a transcendent collaboration between four musicians who begin from different places but arrive as one. Karl-Martin Almqvist, Nduduzo Makhathini, Magne Thormodsæter, and Ayanda Sikade form Ababhemu Quartet, and present their new album The Travelers on April 19, 2024. The seeds of the quartet were planted while recording Makhathini’s ‘Listening To The Ground’ album years ago, and finally the band is in full force with a powerful statement of unity.
This quartet puts forward the message of brotherhood across colored lines, and across geography. Ababhemu Quartet plays against the history of coloniality and puts the sound in the center of how we can imagine a world that is united and goes against the historical catastrophies. This record production represents for me a kind of “viaticum” towards the return to a complete musical activity, but it is also a farewell to Emilia Fadini, a great musician and musicologist specialized in the study and performance of late Renaissance, Baroque and Classical repertoire, with whom I had the privilege of studying for almost twenty years. The pieces in this recording are the last ones we faced together and I feel like to have to dedicate her this work. This is a way to remember someone who was a teacher, a friend, as well as a solid point of reference and an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me as well as for many musicians who, at least in Italy, are actually involved in ancient music.

Brazilian singer and composer Arthur Melo turns to the ‘70s & ‘80s, to the musical greats like Caetano Veloso and Milton Nascimento, channelling his love of director Brian de Palma and old detective films, and positioning himself amongst a new generation of contemporary musicians.
Arthur Melo, a young Brazilian composer, guitarist and singer returns to releasing music, with his second single after a 3 year break, with a new album Mirantes Emocionais, set for release on British label Wonderfulsound. Backed by his band O Ministério da Consciência it’s a work that pays homage to Arthur’s heroes of Brazilian music from the ‘70s and ‘80s yet goes much beyond throwback. Like his previous post-tropicalia, psychedelic and percussive material, it honours Brazil’s divergent musical history but always looking forward, treading new paths and placing Arthur in a venerable category of explorative, young Brazilian artists alongside the likes of Sessa & Ana Frango Elétrico.
Produced by Kassim (Erasmu Carlos, Caetano Veloso), the album whose title translates from Portuguese to ‘emotional viewpoints’ has plentiful film references (Arthur studied film at University) and visually it alludes to those vintage detective and mafia film favourites of Arthur, like Scarface. The album artwork is by street artist DMS.

Iskrena Yordanova and Zefira Valova – Tartini’s Letter: Violin Duos Op. 4 (2024)

This recording presents an unedited early classical repertoire by the Venetian composer and violinist Maddalena Lombardini Sirmen (1745-1760). As an outstanding pupil at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice, she was allowed to study with Giuseppe Tartini in Padua, who wrote her a long letter in which he explained his methods of violin playing and practising. This letter was copied in Padua even before it was sent and printed in Italy around 1770, followed by translations into English, German and French.
Lombardini Sirmen was an extraordinary artist of the Enlightenment who achieved great popularity through her European tours as a violinist and through her compositions. Her music was widely published and reprinted by various publishers in Paris, the Netherlands, Germany and London. Her duets for two violins Opus 5 (Paris 1773) are a perfect example of the virtuosity that combines delicate and extravagant chamber music sonorities of the classical period.
The performers are violinists Zefira Valova and Iskrena Yordanova, concertmasters of the two leading European baroque orchestras Il Pomo d’Oro and Divino Sospiro.

Mountain Stage is a two-hour, live music performance radio show staged with a theater audience, produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting, and distributed by NPR.
Mountain Stage debuted in December 1983 at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia. Since then, we’ve produced well over 1,000 shows at our home and as far away as Glasgow, Scotland and Fairbanks, Alaska. The venues have ranged from The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to a portable stage in the woods of Pocahontas County, WV.
We are a team sport. Many of the folks who work with us have done so for more than 30 years and most have been here at least 20. Like a family, we’ve seen births and deaths, marriages and divorces, triumphs and tragedies. Stagehands, merch sellers, engineers, band members and producers have all contributed to the growth and evolution of the
show as have audience members, listeners, donors, and underwriters.
