Rhino is planning to release a new Super Deluxe Edition box set of Yes‘ third studio album, “The Yes Album”.

It contains a vinyl LP, four CDs and a Blu-ray audio and features a new Dolby Atmos mix of the 1971 album by Steven Wilson. His previous 5.1 mix and a Hi-Res stereo Mix are also included on the Blu-ray (but not the original mix of the album).

In addition, the CDs include two previously unreleased concerts, the instrumental tracks and a new stereo mix (from 2014), 20 rare tracks and the original mix of the album (which is also included on the vinyl in this set).

Wilson shares his insights on the new mixes in the set’s accompanying notes: “I used my 5.1 mix as a starting point for the Atmos Mix, but found myself taking a rather different approach to some parts of the music, partly due to the additional speakers to place the sounds, but also because I have learned a lot in the almost ten years since I first remixed the album… I hope you enjoy ‘The Yes Album‘ in its new, completely spatial form. To me, it still sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded.”

Steven is referring to his mixes from 2014, which were released back then as a CD+Blu-ray set with a lot of great content. This is still available in the SDE shop, but obviously does not include the new Atmos Mix.

Many artists achieve greatness but very few produce work that is so moving it’s considered sacred. Whether you choose to call them hymns, psalms or spirituals, their songs are a healing force for troubled times. We feel close to these prophets, in recognition of their uncommon labours. It is as if they have given all of themselves, body and soul, through music.

We can safely say that our Spiritual Jazz series would not exist without the inspiration and leadership of the spiritual messiah that is John Coltrane. It can therefore only be right and proper that we dedicate a whole album to his legacy and lasting influence. Spiritual Jazz 15 – A Tribute to ‘Trane shines a spotlight on the reverence in which the saxophonist is held in so many ways.

On one hand our selection displays cover versions of his songs performed by the musicians he inspired; disciples to Coltrane the messiah, who chose to give praise to the one who laid a foundation for them. The listener will also encounter original music written in honour of Coltrane that underlines the endless presence he has had among artists from different backgrounds and eras.

The preacher may have ascended to a higher plane, but his congregation is still right down here on the ground. Ten songs to lift the spirits of everyone, everywhere.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of U2’s Under A Blood Red Sky (originally release 1983), a newly remastered release of the iconic live album is released through UMR/Island Records.

Consisting of live recordings from three shows on the band’s much-acclaimed War tour, the album helped to cement U2’s reputation globally as one of the greatest live acts of all time. Featuring legendary live versions of early classics including “Gloria,” “I Will Follow,” “New Year’s Day” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” the album remains faithful to the original track list, but has been newly remastered at the renowned studio Bernie Grundman Mastering for Black Friday 2023.

U2 had been honing their stagecraft for the best part of 5 years by the time Under A Blood Red Sky was released as their first live album on November 21, 1983. But in the slipstream of their hugely successful third studio album War, issued some nine months earlier, this was the record that told the world that the Irish band were well on the way to becoming one of the greatest attractions in all of live music. As writer Adam Sweeting put it in his Melody Maker review: “Anyone who’s caught the full blast of U2 at full tilt has to admit it’s a rare old shiver.”

Thomas Guthrie’s arrangement of the “Schöne Müllerin” for small ensemble transports the listener back to a world of sound that Schubert knew from the musical evenings in the homes of his friends – those gatherings where the singing was accompanied by guitars, strings and, if available, a piano. Unlike the lieder recital, where the singer stands at the grand piano in a large hall, in this intimate atmosphere the listener is drawn much more into the drama and emotion of Schubert’s music. The singer Thomas Guthrie is supported by Bjarte Eike and members of his ensemble Barokksolistene.

What is more magical than a Christmas album by a trio of female singers who execute close harmony to perfection? Briefly, close harmony is a singing technique in which the voices are very close to one another and remain confined to a single octave. In this regard, The Puppini Sisters are heiresses in a long and prestigious line of vocal music groups, the most famous undoubtedly being The Andrews Sisters, a trio who entertained Americans in the dark years of the 1940s. The Puppini Sisters took the same comforting approach when they conceived this album, recorded in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, or more precisely, during the 2020 holiday season. For Marcella Puppini, the group’s founder, this record, exclusively available on Qobuz, wasn’t solely about the music: “It was about reaching out and touching the hearts of our fans when they needed it the most. The joy we received in return was the best Christmas gift we could ask for.” Recorded in front of a live audience (reduced to follow safety measures) at Premises Studios in London, this album consists of classic, essential Christmas songs, from “Jingle Bells” to “Let It Snow”, “O Holy Night”, and many in between. Such a selection, paired with this vocal technique, inevitably immerses us into waters that are decidedly retro. The British trio revisits the past with sparkling enthusiasm, and sometimes, a touch of irony. To this end, the mischievous Puppini Sisters have also chosen more unexpected tracks, like George Michael’s “Last Christmas”, to which they bring a delightfully jazzy sensuality. They have also made sure to give a nod to Marcella’s Italian roots, covering “Ba Ba Baciami”, a bouncy foxtrot created in 1940 by Roman Alberto Rabagliati. Accompanied by a piano, an accordion, a bass, and, obviously, bells, The Puppini Sisters recreate the spirit of Christmas in all of its warmth, color, and joy. – Nicolas Magenham

The third album from Levon Eskenian’s remarkable ensemble is its most adventurous to date. As well as reclaiming the music of esoteric teacher G. I. Gurdjieff for folk instrumentation, Zartir situates Gurdjieff in a tradition of Armenian bards and troubadours including Ashugh Jivani, Baghdasar Tbir and the legendary Sayat-Nova. In parallel, an emphasis on pieces for sacred dance reaches its apex in The Great Prayer, an entrancing collaboration between the Gurdjieff Ensemble and the National Chamber Choir of Armenia, which draws upon ritual music of multiple faiths. Arranger Eskenian says, “I believe The Great Prayer is more than a mere ‘composition’. It is one of the most profound and transformative pieces I have encountered in Gurdjieff’s work.” Zartir was recorded in Yerevan in 2021 and mixed and completed in Munich in November 2022 by Levon Eskenian, Tigran Kuzikyan, and Manfred Eicher.

Merge Records release I Am Not There Anymore, The Clientele’s first new record in six years. Over The Clientele’s 32-year career, critics and fans have described their songs with words like “ethereal,” “shimmering,” “hazy,” “pretty,” and “fragile.” Their singer, guitarist, and lyricist, Alasdair MacLean, has his own interpretation of the effect his music creates. “It’s that feeling of not being there,” he says. “What’s really been in all the Clientele records is a sense of not actually inhabiting the moment your body is in.”

I Am Not There Anymore, regularly evokes what MacLean calls “the feeling of not being real.” Many of the songs were inspired by MacLean’s memories of the early summer in 1997, when his mother died, but also represent The Clientele pushing towards a new sonic frontier as a band, experimenting over the course of a three-year recording period.

Of this stretching out, MacLean says, “We’d always been interested in music other than guitar music, like for donkey’s years.” This time out, he and bassist James Hornsey and drummer Mark Keen incorporated elements of post-bop jazz, contemporary classical, and electronic music. According to MacLean, “None of those things had found their way into our sound other than in the most passing way, in the faintest imprint.”

With those elements in the foreground, I Am Not There Anymore reasserts The Clientele’s standing among the great stylists of pop music, deftly shifting from image to image, mood to mood, in a way that feels both new and classically them.
