Deleted Scenes, a four-piece indie band from DC, released its first self-entitled EP in 2007, twelve years after meeting in grade school. In 2009, the band released a full-length, Birdseed Shirt, which was recorded mostly in group houses across the east coast over the course of a year with producer L. Skell (the Rude Staircase). It was met with critical acclaim from Pitchfork, which praised its “thoughtful existentialism and strange, drowsy downers” (8.0 score), and NPR, which called it “playfully unpredictable and totally infectious.”
After playing more than 300 self-booked shows in support of Birdseed Shirt, the band took some time before recording Young People’s Church of the Air (Sept 6, 2011) at the Garden Center in Hockessin, DE. “We decided to record the new album in a real studio where we could explore the dark arts with L. Skell while working more efficiently” courtesy of engineer Nick Krill (Spinto Band), said bass player Matt Dowling.

Phantom Limb boss and musician James Vella – aka A Lily – with Saru l-Qamar, setting archival Maltese home recordings to new music for an album of nostalgic quasi-ambience and cross-generational dialogue.
“From the 60’s until the modern era, it was common for Maltese families to receive reel tapes from relatives abroad. Maltese emigrés resettled in Australia, the UK, Canada etc. would record their news onto cassette – often in the form of għana, traditional Maltese song – and mail the tapes back home. Amazingly, through the superlative archival work of Malta’s nonprofit heritage foundation Magna Żmien, many of these tapes still exist. A Lily was allowed access to Magna Żmien’s collection and in late 2022 began creating new musical works responding to these recordings. These works make up the oneiric bliss of new album Saru l-Qamar [Eng: They Became The Moon], his first release on his own label.
Arranged alongside hardware synthesis and “minimal DAW intervention”, the recordings take on ghostly, spiritual new qualities. Simple storytelling and news-sharing become plaintive and evocative elegies for friends and family lost to time.

Ashley Wass, a veteran pianist, educator, and chamber musician, boasts a rich career spanning three decades. Former Deputy Head of Keyboard Studies at the Royal Northern College of Music and a Professor at the Royal College of Music, he co-founded Mash Productions and directed the Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival for over a decade. Trained at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, he won the London International Piano Competition in 1997 and received huge acclaim for his debut recording of César Franck’s piano compositions. As a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and prizewinner at the Leeds Piano Competition, Wass has performed with many of the major orchestras of the world and at events including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the BBC Proms, where he has made several appearances. As a keen chamber musician he also co-founded Trio Apaches, a group renowned for their captivating performances and innovative programming, including acclaimed broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and collaborations with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

The Symphony No. 4 in G major by Gustav Mahler was composed from 1899 to 1900, though it incorporates a song originally written in 1892. That song, “Das himmlische Leben” (“The Heavenly Life”), presents a child’s vision of heaven and is sung by a soprano in the symphony’s Finale. Both smaller in orchestration and shorter in length than Mahler’s earlier symphonies, the Fourth Symphony was initially planned to be in six movements, alternating between three instrumental and three vocal movements. The symphony’s final form—begun in July 1899 at Bad Aussee and completed in August 1900 at Maiernigg—retains only one vocal movement (the Finale) and is in four movements: Bedächtig, nicht eilen (sonata form); In gemächlicher Bewegung, ohne Hast (scherzo and trio); Ruhevoll, poco adagio (double theme and variations); and Sehr behaglich (strophic variations).

Liza Ferschtman
Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman is known for her passionate performances, interesting programs and communicative qualities on stage. She is equally at home on the concert stage with concertos, chamber music, recitals and solo works. In 2006 she received the highest accolade awarded to a musician in the Netherlands, the Dutch Music Prize.
Born into a family of Russian musicians, Liza Ferschtman was constantly surrounded by music. One of her earliest major influences was the violinist Philipp Hirschhorn, a close family friend. She received her formal training from Herman Krebbers at the Amsterdam Conservatory, Ida Kavafian at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and David Takeno in London.
In recent years Liza Ferschtman has performed with all significant Dutch Orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw and the Rotterdam Philhamonic. She has been soloist of the Orchestre National de Belgique, European Union Youth Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic, Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, Bremen Philharmonic, Radio Symphony Orchestra of Prague, Malmö Symphony, and Bergen Philharmonic. Conductors she has worked with include Stephan Blunier, Frans Bruggen, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Claus Peter Flor, Neeme Järvi, Yakov Kreizberg, Zdenek Macal, Jun Maerkl, Gianandrea Noseda, Marc Soustrot, Leonard Slatkin, Thomas Sondergard, Karl-Heinz Steffens, Mario Venzago and Jaap van Zweden.

Violin master Kavacos performed 12 famous violin pieces with the Guanelli famous violin from 1742, showing extraordinary skills and the mellow tone of the famous violin!
The Greek violinist Kavacos was the winner of the 36th (1988) International Competition of Paganini in Italy, which not only made him a professional violinist, but also able to use the famous piano that Paganini once loved, the Guanelli violin “Jesus” in 1742. This collection of Kavakos violin masterpieces recorded in Delos, mastered by Top Music, shows the audiophilic nature of the recording, you can hear the solid and pure timbre of Kavakos, as well as the “pine scent” at your fingertips, and a satisfactory sense of extension, these parts are even more prominent than the original Version of Delos, and it is definitely a rare classic string sketch. The emergence of this SACD, which sets the standard for violin test pieces, can be said to be the index work of the new generation of violin test pieces.
Audiophiles are well aware that a good violin recording is one of the essential treasures for testing the effectiveness of equipment. This album is a test disc created by Tianle Company for the German super audiophile equipment brand – Accustic Arts, and its excellent measured performance can be imagined. Coupled with Leonidas’ first-class skills, excellent texture of the famous violin, and highly realistic reproduction of the recording production technology, “Leonidas Cavacos Best Music Portfolio” is undoubtedly a good choice for classical fans and enthusiasts alike.

Gary Cooper is one of our foremost performers on the fortepiano, well-known for his wonderful series of Mozart Violin Sonata discs with Rachel Podger. In his booklet for this recording, he tells us that “The inspiration for this recording was derived from that all-too-rare occurrence: a perfect marriage of instrument and composer’s music.” The piano in question is a Viennese instrument from an unknown maker, dated 1785, from the collection of Edwin Beunk. It is not a copy, as commonly found on recordings, but a lovingly restored original. Cooper might well have added that there is also a clear “marriage” between piano and performer, as these carefully prepared and superbly executed readings of Haydn’s late keyboard works demonstrate.

Vol. 6 of our journey of discovery through the Northern German organ baroque is dedicated to the two new masters Franz Tunder and Nicolaus Hasse. Tunder, the better known of the two, was Buxtehude’s predecessor as city organist in Lübeck. Hardly any documentation of Hasse’s life has come down to us, but he was probably a pupil of J. Praetorius, J. P. Sweelinck, and H. Scheidemann and is known to have been the organist at St. Mary’s Church in Stendal beginning in the late 1620s and later the organist at St. Mary’s Church in Rostock. His four organ works shine with echo effects and virtuoso coloraturas, and his chorale fantasia »Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott« in particular is endowed with a quality and extent verging on Tunder’s great fantasias. For his part, Tunder not only enjoyed what was then the world’s largest brick edifice as his place of musical operations but also played a decisive role in the development of an independent, public music culture.
