Fernando Lopes-Graça, one of Portugal’s most prolific and innovative 20th-century composers, was steeped in the folk songs of various provenances. In this third instalment (the earlier volumes are on 8.579039 and 8.579082) Lopes-Graça sets some of the greatest of all Portuguese poets. His exploration of harmonic complexity and progressive writing is distantly rooted in Debussy and laced with other subtle French elements. Premiere recordings of the kaleidoscopic Old English and French songs, which run the gamut of emotions, are among his earliest settings of foreign folk songs.

Johann Simon Mayr’s music stands at the interface between the classical and romantic periods. The expressive lyrical qualities in his religious music reflect a career in which he composed almost 70 operas. The Messa solenne is in the Italian tradition of the Messa concertata and contains the full stem movement – a rarity in Mayr’s oeuvre in this genre. The polyphonic sections of the work left a particularly lasting impression on churchgoers of the time, as Mayr’s first biographer Girolamo Calvi attests, who wrote enthusiastically about the “exquisite vocal music” and the “profoundly exciting” virtuosity of this work – qualities that remained hidden for almost 200 years.

The Art of Fugue emerges as the central instrumental project of the last decade of Bach’s life, after a gradual development over several years: the exploration in depth and with an overflowing musical imagination of the contrapuntal possibilities inherent in a single musical subject. In this work, the theoretical component of Bach’s thinking is at its clearest: theory and practice merge, old and new stylistic elements and compositional techniques are integrated and demonstrate in an incomparable way his individual approach to composition. Since Bach gave no indication of the instrument, nor does his writing shed any further light on the subject, one might even wonder whether this work is a purely theoretical work, intended solely for musical analysis. However, since the composer’s rediscovery in the nineteenth century, musicians have appropriated the work, whatever their instrument. It is now generally accepted that the work was composed for the keyboard. A second harpsichord part is added for three fugues, played here by Masato Suzuki. After several acclaimed recordings of Bach’s works for keyboard instruments, Masaaki Suzuki finally takes on this immense work, the pinnacle of the cantor’s art and one of the absolute peaks of Western music.

Volume 61 of Naxos’s acclaimed Liszt Complete Piano Music edition features opera transcriptions from Les Huguenots, Il giuramento, Lohengrin and Jean de Nivelle.
Nearly half of Franz Liszt’s early output consisted of transcriptions and arrangements, filling out his virtuoso concert programmes with some of the grandest and most popular operas of the day. He cleverly weaves themes through a dramatic Grande Fantaisie on Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots, while the Fantasia on Mercadante’s Il giuramento is a superb example of Liszt’s flamboyant and virtuosic earlier style. All of these works require delicate brilliance and precision alongside a superb technique to meet their fearsome challenges – the Rondeau fantastique on Manuel García’s ‘El contrabandista’ is one of the most technically demanding pieces Liszt ever composed.

In 1731, at the height of his London fame, Handel created his 28th opera seria: a vocal pyrotechnic about the rivalry, in love and war, between Alexander the Great and the Indian King Porus.
Rage and spite, love and glory drive the extraordinary arias that Handel entrusted to two of his favourite singers: the castrato star Senesino for the title role, and the soprano Anna Maria Strada del Po as the treacherous Cleofide. It was a sign of the work’s success and the prestige of its cast. Poro was performed twenty times in 1731, a virtually exceptional figure.
The young tenor Marco Angioloni – singing the role of Alexander – brings this opera back to life with his Ensemble Il Groviglio, and a magnificent cast that would have delighted Handel!
