In 1933, Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 was the first symphonic work by a Black woman to be played by a major American orchestra, and the third was composed in the midst of the Chicago Renaissance. The two symphonies, played by the Philadelphia Orchestra and conducted by Yannick N’ezet-S’eguin, are set to be released 24 September 2021.

Founded at the Musik Akademie der Stadt Basel, Switzerland, Philon Trio is a chamber ensemble consisting of David Dias da Silva on clarinet, Adam Newman on viola, and Camilla Köhnken on piano. It’s in the context of a residency at Canada’s Banff Center for Arts and Creativity that they recorded the excellent work 8 Pieces, Op. 83 by the German composer Max Bruch. Bruch was 72 in 1910 when he composed Acht Stücke Op. 83 for his son, Max Felix, already a professional clarinetist. Written in a late but conservative Romantic style, far removed from the language of Bruch’s contemporaries Stravinsky, Bartók, and Schoenberg, this work is deep, intense, passionate and intimate.

Rud’s career as a jazz musician began in the 1960s in Oslo. He played in Ditlef Eckhoff’s Quintet in 1965 and worked with Svein Finnerud from 1967 to 1974, with whom he recorded three LPs. In 1968 he began studying at the Conservatory, participated in a recording by Karin Krog and founded his own Band. In 1969 he was a member of Arild Bomans Ensemble.

Most of Cesar Franck’s works received scant attention at the time of their composition and Hulda was never performed in his lifetime. The narrative is set in 14th-century Norway at the time of the great tribal kings, with marauding hordes spreading fear and terror throughout the land. Hulda is kidnapped and transferred from one tribe to the other, her family is killed and she herself is humiliated. However, Hulda’s spirit cannot be crushed, and she survives with revenge as her goal in life. Franck’s music portrays raging clans, bloodthirsty murderers and shattered lives, but also moments of exquisite tenderness in this acclaimed revival of a forgotten masterpiece that places the role of Hulda among the great tragic stage heroines.

In 2013 Matthew Houck relied on the earthly charm of country folk to show us his vision of the great feeling of love on his album Muchacho. Since then many things have changed, especially after meeting composer and multi-instrumentalist Jo Schornikow. A wedding and two children later, the family has left New York for the home of the Grand Ole Opry: Nashville. Despite Houck’s growing prominence, he’d started becoming completely exhausted by the end of tours and simply couldn’t endure this frantic pace of life anymore. Following a well-deserved five-year paternity leave, and the creation of his own studio under the name Spirit Sound, he can finally get back to business with his seventh album and get his name, Phosphorescent, back out there. With C’est la vie, Houck stays faithful to the Dead Oceans label but presents himself in a new light. A healthier, more balanced man, who thinks straight and is in tune with his parental responsibilities.
