Wagner’s genius is often associated with his unique sense of orchestration. These transcriptions and paraphrases for piano reveal the beauty and boldness of his harmonic language, whose suggestive power was unparalleled at the time. With Nikolai Lugansky, who is both narrator and virtuoso here, the listener is immersed in a world of legends where heroes – with sublimity – tell of human torments and longings.

Scottish alt/post/progressive-rock outfit Midas Fall release their Fifth studio album, ‘Cold Waves Divide Us’ on March 8th, 2024 worldwide on Monotreme Records. Michael Hamilton joins founding members Elizabeth Heaton and Rowan Burn for the follow-up to their 2018 Prog Magazine Awards ‘Limelight Award’ winning album, ‘Evaporate’. ‘Cold Waves Divide Us’ sees Midas Fall at their most confidently visceral, each song moving beautifully between quiet and loud, gentle and crushing. “This album is a heavier and bigger experience than the last album”, says Heaton. “We kept the atmospheric strings and 80s synths of Evaporate but wanted to add heavier layered elements, to represent more what we sound like live.” Opener ‘In the Morning We’ll Be Someone Else’ starts quietly with serene piano and vocals, ominously ratcheting up the tension to walls of crashing guitars and Heaton’s soaring vocals. ‘I Am Wrong’ thunders along on pounding rhythmic drums swirling around heavy swathes of low and delicate melodic highs. On ‘Monsters’, the band are more contemplative, with an ethereal beginning making way for gorgeously syncopated guitar and drums, whilst ‘Cold Waves Divide Us’ builds slower, allowing Heaton’s voice to gracefully float over the growing force beneath it. ‘Avalanche’ is a bittersweet lullabye showcasing Heaton’s heart-rending vocals in one of the quieter moments on the album. ‘Point of Diminishing Return’ sees a more electronic influence, with glittering shimmered synths taking the space where guitar melodies were, but with all of the Post-Rock beauty that the duo are known for, something ‘Little Wooden Boxes’ showcases perfectly, expertly hovering between gentle clean guitar and piano, and exhilarating, uplifting full-band, full-bore epic.

The enduring charm of Schubert’s Impromptus lies in their status as his most beloved creations, and for good reason: they are, in essence, songs without words infused with melodies of rare beauty. Composed in 1827, just one year before the composer’s passing, the first book, D. 899, speaks to the listener in a profoundly intimate and personal manner. The German Dances, D. 790, were Brahms’ favorite set of Ländler, representing the folk pieces so typical of Schubert’s genius. The Sonata No. 10 in C major, D. 613, reveals a composer exploring the limits of modulations and chromaticism, yet always prioritizing melodies.”

All songs were written by Will Anderson except “Ocean” and “Talk to Me” by Will Anderson and Jackson Morgan. Fans and critics alike are no stranger to Anderson’s impeccable ability to connect as a songwriter, with Billboard hailing that he has a “knack for writing emotionally connecting, hook-laden songs that linger in the brain for days’ as well as Idolator calling the band’s past songs, “well-crafted and infectious.”

Some venues are intentional while others are happenstance, and Lowlands wasn’t always a place for jazz or its players.

The first time I met Walter, he was on a date with a regular from the bar. He was wearing a red headband, a basketball jersey, and Nike Air Force 1s. It looked like he was vying for the affection of the Chicago Bulls, much less a woman. I soon learned that he used his towering height not to block shots, but to handle a standup bass.

A few months later he introduced me to Kevin and asked if they could do a happy hour gig at the bar.

I figured, why not? I love jazz. Mom loves jazz. And if the bar patrons don’t like jazz, they can go somewhere else.

This is Brooklyn, after all.

Fast forward a few years to the night this album was recorded. Kevin is wearing a green jersey and playing like an ascendant Jason Tatum. Walter is dribbling apace and improvising agile moves not typical of a player of that size and clout. And Matt is tying it all together, since a team relies on a steady rhythm as much as it relies on a fast break.

Kevin, Walter, and Matt infused a new identity into Lowlands, and anyone there that night saw the bar discover a new part of itself.

John Hartford – Backroads, Rivers & Memories-The Rare & Unreleased – If all John Hartford had done was to write “Gentle on My Mind”, his legend would be sealed as a songwriting giant. But his talent as a singer and instrumentalist catapulted him to fame not only as the banjo-playing sidekick on the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour TV show of the late sixties, but also as an in-demand studio sideman (the Byrds’ fabled Sweetheart of the Rodeo, James Taylor’s Mud Slide Slim, and countless others). In the midst of this, he formed the band that made Aereo Plain, the 1971 record that defined newgrass before the progressive new style had a name. Or any other practitioners.

In the early weeks and months of the pandemic, confined to my Brooklyn apartment in the silenced city, I dreamed of wide-open spaces and the freedom to roam. I started researching “trail songs,” drawn to their lyrics about pale dawns, slumbering shadows, and other evocative imagery. What heaven, to saddle up a reliable horse and wander, unworried and unhurried, under a vast Western sky!

When trumpeter Henry Moderlak came across a magnificent volume of sheet music entitled L’orgue baroque espagnol, which contained Spanish organ works from the 17th century, he made an interesting discovery: many of the motifs in the musical text reminded him of the trumpet literature of the time. Titles such as Piezas de Clarines referred to the special clarino stop of Spanish organs, which was used in instruments on the Iberian Peninsula in the 17th century: With horizontally arranged pipes, the so-called Spanish trumpets protruded from the organ case into the room and imitated the natural trumpet in shape and sound. What was striking, however, was that the passages in question used the ambitus and range of real natural trumpets – and could therefore actually be transferred to the trumpet: The idea for the «Proyecto Clarin» was born.

Maria Callas sang the role of Gioconda on stage a total of 13 times – five in 1947, eight more in 1952–3. It may therefore come as a surprise that Ponchielli’s ironically named street singer played such a pivotal role in the soprano’s life and career. After numerous setbacks in her effort to launch an American career in the mid-1940s, Callas struck gold when she auditioned for retired tenor Giovanni Zenatello, searching for a protagonist for a Gioconda he was casting for the Verona Arena’s summer season of 1947. The 23-year-old soprano got the part, and during those performances met two men who changed her life – Giovanni Battista Meneghini, whom she married, and Maestro Tullio Serafin, who became her artistic mentor. Fast forward five years, and we find Callas recording Gioconda, her first complete opera release, and another seven years to sessions for this more artistically mature second studio Gioconda – during which time she announced her separation from Meneghini, mentioning her ‘profound friendship’ with Aristotle Onassis.

From the seemingly implausible combination of death metal legend Chris Reifert (Autopsy, Death, Violation Wound, Abscess) and musician/comedian Dave Hill (Valley Lodge, Witch Taint) comes Painted Doll, a blend of hippie/psych/hard rock/prog and power pop from the duo’s shared love of 60s and early 70s music. Receiving critical acclaim for their 2017 debut that saw them rewarded with east and west coast shows, including a support to Monster Magnet, Reifert and Hill have been swift, in between their other commitments,to follow up with this 12-track sophomore that takes their original concept to even higher levels! Composed in Autopsy’s rehearsal room in Oakland but recorded in New Jersey once again with producer Tom Beaujour (Nada Surf, Julian Hatfield, Guided by Voices), “How To Draw Fire” does exactlythat, sharingPainted Doll’s incredible vibes and grooves much needed in the current climate of pandemic and politics. With more than a nod to Dave Wyndorf, opener ‘Sun In The Sea’ resonates all the trippy hippy love with an acoustic and organ touch, and along with a rolling 60s bass, the Southern fried guitar solo ignites this superb song – and indeed album – as it rolls abundant in love and positivity. Warming you up through its organ and piano keys in full flow, along with teasing guitar licks and occasional wails adding to its laid-back vocals, ‘On The Ropes’ rolls along to a placid groove, although the powerful emotions underlying the song harbour its depth. Slowing down with its moving slide guitar on ‘Blue Postcards’, psych vocals add their hypnosis to the trippy ambiance until unexpectedly exploding in a fast screaming guitar medley more befitting Southern Rock’s greatest guitar legends! Crunching in on ‘Midnight Morning’, with its T-Rexpsych rock guitar sound and Marc Bolan style vocals, the chorus however, is another unexpected shift – this time into proto metal whose headbanging gusto is thanks to some heftily plucked bass strings. Bringing in some fast sunshine surf ‘n’ roll on ‘Dollhouse Rock’, a Ramones style punk element adds just the right amount of fire, especially in the screaming guitar solo that makes the difference here on this short number. Ending in the flower power pop of ‘Leave A Light On’ with its bountiful harmonies of ‘…I got so high, I thought I had cancer…’ and tinny guitars occasionally breaking into rock ‘n’ roll and hippie rock, Reifert and Hill have upped the bar. Indeed, they’ve given plenty around them reason to reconsider their unlikely success forged through the amazing music here that’s sure to bring tears of joy and plenty of memories to anyone musically rooted in the 60s and early 70s.
