Though he is much less well remembered than his more famous brothers, Johann II and Josef, Eduard Strauss was the master of the quick polka and the galop with a succession of distinctive and beguiling melodies and a genius for orchestration. This latest release continues the rediscovery of his music with a succession of pieces, all of which are receiving their first commercial recordings. His music was performed at some of Vienna’s most glittering balls and carnival festivities with Eduard offering such à la mode pieces as the Electric Lights waltz and the ingenious equine polka, Leaps of Pegasus.

Though better known as a virtuoso keyboard player, as a young man Handel also trained as a violinist. His works for violin and harpsichord, says essayist Donald Burrows, ‘do not attract attention by flashy virtuosity: rather, they are flowing and agreeable chamber music, in which the violinist is in musical conversation with the keyboard player’.
Who better to guide us in this conversation than two early music stars – Bojan Čičić, fresh from acclaimed solo recordings of Bach and Johann Jakob Walther; and Steven Devine, who has known the magnificent 1756 Kirckman harpsichord since boyhood and for whom, he says, it is a privilege and delight to record these Handel Sonatas on it.

His views on owning his own recorded masters have been referred to as ‘the Ray Charles of contemporary jazz and soul music’ among his peers. As of January 1, 2023, he owns all but 7 of his 33+ studio projects.
His album “The Stay At Home Series, Vol. 1” was selected in 2022 as the best contemporary jazz album by the inaugural Jazz Music Awards program. Sahrawi singer-songwriter activist Aziza Brahim’s fifth album Mawja (Wave in Hassaniya Arabic) is fashioned from a simple but powerful foundational palette: Saharan and Iberian percussion entwining with stately guitars and warm, enveloping bass.
Co-produced by Brahim with long-time collaborator Guillem Aguilar, the record from her oeuvre that Mawja most sonically resembles is her revered and graceful debut Soutak (2014).
That noted, there is a confident eclecticism found here, an expansive take on her vision that even includes a drum pattern inspired by the Clash.

In a nutshell this is brightly voiced chamber jazz from Denver trombonist and composer-arranger Zach Rich on an album of his own music recorded in a Colorado studio at the end of 2021 for jazz quintet and chamber orchestra.
We liked the scurrying sax to-and-fro on the ‘Anthem’ track and Julian Carey’s vocal on his own lyrics to ‘What is the World Rated’ mainly spoken as a kind of homily rather than sung and where the song examines what cinema rating the world would be given is explored.
