Steve Roach – Structures from Silence (Deluxe) (40th Anniversary Remaster) (1984/2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Steve Roach – Structures from Silence (Deluxe) (40th Anniversary Remaster) (1984/2024)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 03:09:22 minutes | 3,35 GB | Genre: Electronic, Minimal, Ambient
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Projekt

Projekt celebrates the 40th anniversary of this ambient classic with a beautiful remastered limited edition LP, 1CD, & 3CD. Structures from Silence‘s breathing, suspended embrace of atmospheres and serene melodies instantly struck a chord with listeners in 1984; the album continues to reiterate its timeless resonations with new listeners today. On this landmark recording of gentle proportions, the three long-form tracks were the birth of something new: an original and pure statement striking a balance between diaphanous and understated, deep and reflective. The listening experience evokes a sense of silence within the music as well as the space between the chords. It expresses the breath of life and offers a meditation on delicate strands of subtle awareness.

Forty years later, Structures from Silence remains an iconic American release in the ambient and electronic genres. It’s a well-respected soundtrack for contemplation, relaxation, meditation, and creativity. Emotional, powerful, and enriching, it is a living example of the true healing quality that music can hold.

Steve reflects, “Structures from Silence remains a still point in suspended time for me when looking back over the span of my life immersed within the creative currents of sound and silence. Over 40 years ago the pieces on this album were created from my sole (soul’s) desire to live within a sonic space that would provide a sense of safety, soul nurturing comfort and time suspension. There was no original intention to make an album around these pieces. They were created purely as a sanctuary for my emerging personal journey as an artist. Once the three tracks were recorded it eventually became clear they belonged together in what would become the Structures from Silence album we have today and presented in this beautifully remastered 2024 edition. The response this music has reflected back to me over all these years is a humble reminder filled with gratitude, of the essential, pure need to listen deep into the moment, respond and create from this place without question.”

The 3CD deluxe edition includes two bonus discs created in 2013, and remastered for this edition. Steve says, “Over the years since the creation of Structures from Silence, certain pieces would emerge in the studio that instantly had the resonance of a direct relationship to the place that birthed this work back in 1984. Like the light slowing emerging in an early morning sunrise returning from a thirty year orbit – the desire to draw from this place of stillness, and deep inner quiet became the soul tone for these new pieces. Like the three original tracks, these were created in moments spent simply being present in the studio, tapping the flow state and guiding this sense into these recorded moments.”

Projekt gives listeners the chance to discover and rediscover this timeless classic. With a beautiful new mastering that reveals the stillness within, this release sets the tone for the next 40 years of silence.

The expressive vitality in this collection of violin sonatas transcends the cultural upheavals from which these three Ukrainian composers emerged. Bortkiewicz’s Violin Sonata in G minor is among the most impressive of his relatively few chamber works, finding his musical language at its most vivid and directly communicative. Kosenko’s Violin Sonata in A minor is notable for the satisfying balance of its two subtly differentiated movements. Skoryk’s Second Violin Sonata is a stylistically diverse chamber work, with pointed allusions to Beethoven, Prokofiev and Gershwin during its compact and always eventiul course.

If it takes a village to support and sustain a Jazz trio, then what better way to acknowledge that cherished sense of community than with a marvelous piece of art. In the case of drummer Rodrigo Recabarren, pianist Yago Vazquez and bassist Pablo Menares, that takes the form of their new trio album Famila, releasing on February 23 via Greenleaf Music. Having played together for more than a decade, refining a chemistry and musical telepathy that defines their signature sound, Famila is the consummate expression of this talented trio, as well as the kinship they feel for each other, their collective families and the larger community supporting their music.

After the release of the albumD “what if” last year, there was talk of an ensemble like an organism, an exceptional album and the perfect playing of the leader. Even back then, pianist Rainer Böhm had dispensed with the wind section for three compositions during the dramaturgically cleverly linked, highly emotional sextet events, which were balanced like a dream between improvisation and composition, in order to have room for trio pieces with double bassist Arne Huber and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel.

I’m very pleased to announce that I have a new album coming out on the 16th February 2024. Titled Ashes and Dust, Earth and Sky, LLudw a Llwch, Daear a Nef, it is a solo project that feels like a bit of a shift in direction for me. One of the outcomes of a DYCP grant (thank you Arts Council England) that I received to explore composition using different recording techniques, it uses field recordings collected from West Wales and London, and recordings of saxophones, flutes and other bits and pieces. Part composed, part slowly improvised (I think there’s a difference, but it’s hard to know where to draw this line) over a year, the music explores my sense of the place of a specific little corner of Wales, juxtaposed against the more familiar to me sounds of the city. During the pandemic I yearned for open skies and air and sea, and I spent some time exploring my ancestry, learning that generations of my family lived and worked the land in West Wales, before moving east to the coalfields of South Wales. It made me think of our shifting relationships to land, and how estranged from land and earth I felt two floors up in the city during the pandemic. I feel very fortunate to be able to have the time and space to experience and explore both ends of this UK spectrum. Visiting West Wales, in particular the Gwaun Valley, which remains largely unchanged over the last few hundred years compared to the constantly changing cityscape, and reflecting on the different soundscapes I collected led to the responses, improvisations and compositions that are found on this record. I look forward to sharing it with you early next year.

Why a solo piano album? I answer this question by telling what this experience represented for me. In solo piano, all three elements of music – rhythm, harmony and melody – are concentrated in the pianist’s hands; more than on them, however, they depend on his artistic maturity, on his vision and on his aesthetical approach to the world. Harmony has a fascinating logic of its own. In the pieces’ composition, it allows for emotional itineraries which are discovered at the same moment of the composition. This is a mystery and a revelation which engenders torment and satisfaction at the same time. To encounter a progression which reveals itself in the act of its research is a gesture leading to enchantment and emotion. Rhythm is the foundation of vitality, it is ”swing”, it is beat, primeval movement, pulse, dance, the moving of things. There are many ways to express rhythm, not just one; thus, every piece possesses its own beat, and all beats must reach the listener.
