Tastes and sounds were changing quickly in the late ’80s, which prompted New Order’s most startling transformation yet – from moody dance-rockers to, well, moody acid-house mavens. After the band booked a studio on the island hotspot of Ibiza, apparently not knowing that it was the center of the burgeoning house music craze, New Order’s sure instincts for blending rock and contemporary dance resulted in another confident, superb LP. Technique was the group’s most striking production job, with the single “Fine Time” proving a close runner-up to “Blue Monday” as the most extroverted dance track in the band’s catalog. Opening the record, it was a portrait of a group unrecognizable from its origins, delivering lascivious and extroverted come-ons amid pounding beats. It appeared that dance had fully taken over from rock, with the guitars and bass only brought in for a quick solo or bridge. But while pure dance was the case for the singles “Fine Time” and “Round & Round,” elsewhere New Order were still delivering some of the best alternative pop around, plaintive and affecting songs like “Run” (the third single), “Love Less,” and “Dream Attack.” Placed in the perfect position to deliver the definitive alternative take on house music, the band produced another classic record.

A repertoire of absolute rarity is the one presented in this discographic work, given the peculiarity represented by the organic (horn and piano) that in the history of music cannot boast large quantities of original compositions. The programme presented here by Nilo Caracristi and Giancarlo Guarino (v. TC 882480) covers various centuries and changing styles: the music, the performers and the listeners are involved in a constant transformation that is proposed, experienced and perceived on several levels. This musical journey begins with Gustavo Rossari’s Fantasia on motifs by Verdi, passes through the Italian twentieth century with the brilliant Sonata by Giorgio Ferrari, proceeds with Aleksandr Skrjabin’s wonderful, romantic Romanza, an early work of his, plunges into the contemporary age with the nostalgia and rhythmic vigour of Fabián Pérez Tedesco’s Fantasia and with the soft swing of Donato Semeraro’s Ballad and Salsa, and ends with the thrilling main theme of the soundtrack of The Godfather 2, by Nino Rota, presented in a further, final metamorphosis that this time directly involves the musicians, surprising the listeners with an unexpected effect.

One More Car, One More Rider is a double album by British rock musician Eric Clapton, recorded live on August 18 and 19, 2001 at the Staples Center during the Reptile World Tour. The album was released on CD and DVD on November 5, 2002 under the Duck and Reprise Records labels.
The DVD contains the song Will It Go Round in Circles, sung by Billy Preston, in contrast to the CD version. The film was directed by Brian Lockwood and Danny O’Bryen.

Christopher Glynn continues his series of Schubert in English releases with a new recording of ‘The Fair Maid of the Mill’ (Die schöne Müllerin) with acclaimed Scottish tenor Nicky Spence. Set to a new translation by writer and director Jeremy Sams, Willhelm Müller’s direct and emotionally-charged poetry became the basis of Schubert’s first cycle to tell a complete story over the course of its 20 songs. Nicky Spence is one of Scotland’s proudest sons and his unique skills as a singing actor and the rare honesty of his musicianship have earned him a place at the top of the classical music profession. Nicky won a record contract with Decca records while still studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then took a place as an inaugural Harewood Artist at the ENO. Nils Frahm’s ‘Streichelfisch’ is one of three albums of rare early recordings, many of which have been unobtainable for years, some of which have never been released at all, and none of which have ever appeared on streaming services. All the three records of early works reveal a fascinating glimpse into an era of Frahm’s work known until now only to diehard and longstanding fans. Though he first enjoyed success with 2011’s ‘Felt’ and the following year’s ‘Screws’, both performed on solo piano – which he’d studied throughout his youth – the instrument played no part in his early recording career. ‘Streichelfisch’ returns to vinyl for the first time since its original 2005 pressing.

The Doppler brothers and Friedrich Kulhau have yet to attract the public recognition that they already enjoy from the worldwide community of flautists. They certainly deserve to be better known and it is not unreasonable to think that the recognition that Paganini, Ysaye and Sarasate enjoy as famous composers for their instrument will one day be enjoyed by these neglected composers of romantic and virtuosic music for the flute. The Doppler brothers were born in the city of Lemberg, now L’viv in Ukraine. Their father conducted a military band. Successful both as composers and publishers, they also held important Kapellmeister positions in Germany and Hungary. Kuhlau, also the son of a military bandsman, was primarily a pianist (he championed Beethoven’s piano music in his native Denmark) and his C major piano concerto Op.7 of 1810 is worth getting to know. He was a friend of Beethoven – the two composers famously got on well – especially in pubs in Vienna! The flute featured prominently in Kuhlau’s output from his earliest works to his final years, from which the delightful trio of 1831 on this album dates.
