The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and Music Director Gianandrea Noseda will release the first installment of their complete Beethoven symphony cycle, a recording of Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3.

In the 2021–2022 season,Music Director Gianandrea Noseda led the National Symphony Orchestra in performances of Beethoven’s symphonies 1, 3, 4, and 5. Next season, the NSO will complete its Beethoven cycle with performances of the remainder of Beethoven’s nine symphonies in May and June 2023. This initial release of the NSO’s performances of Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3 was recorded live in January 2022 at the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall.

“Chopin at Midnight” is a reimagining of some of my favorite Chopin pieces for solo piano. I’ve wanted to do a solo piano / classical project for years, and Signum’s Steve Long embraced my vision. While Chopin mostly wrote for small, live performances in the salons of Paris, I’ve wondered for some time what his compositions would sound like if he were alive today in the age of streaming? What lengths would they be; which motifs would he choose to repeat; which tempi and miking techniques would he use? I’ve approached these arrangements with those parameters in mind, while still embracing the idea that Chopin is fundamentally more harmonically complex than most Neo-classical music. I wanted to squeeze out melodic and secondary phrases and allow the listener to enjoy them in perhaps a way that one couldn’t in a typical, full-paced interpretation. I’ve found there’s an entirely different world of colors, textures, and moments when we’re allowed to linger a bit longer on the pieces — unhurriedly. The one original piece, “Dorothy’s Theme”, was largely improvised in the studio as we were wrapping up the recording session. It’s a tribute to my grandmother who was in hospice at the time or recording.

“Bravo Mozart!” exclaimed Emperor Joseph II as he stood up and tipped his hat at the end of the first performance of Piano Concerto No. 18 KV 456 , played by Mozart himself on 30 September 1784. Less than a year later, the composer pens his iconic 21st concerto, which is performed here by the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg conducted by Howard Griffiths, and pianist Jonathan Fournel. Winner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2021, the French pianist has already made a Brahms recording for Alpha (ALPHA851). At the age of 30, he is developing a highly promising career, impressing audiences at every one of his concerts.

PLAY! is Henning Ullén’s second album under his own name. Together with Mauritz Agnas on double bass and Nils Agnas on drums, the trio offers music with a melancholic undertone, yet infused with a joy of playing. The title of the album, also the title of the second track urges us to play, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and improvisation in its simplest form. On the other hand, the music is rich, oscillating between well-composed, sometimes complex passages and freer sections that leave room for improvisation. The album is infused with a driving high-energy vibe. At times, the boundaries blur between what is composed and what is improvised. In addition to the trio format, the album also includes some shorter solo improvisations where Ullén for the first time on record presents his solo-playing.

Il commande et crée un vaste répertoire auprès d’un très grand nombre de compositeurs et collabore avec les plus grands compositeurs et créateurs du monde entier (Terry Riley, Vladimir Cosma, Alvin Lucier, Mamoru Fujieda, Lustmord, Jaan Rääts, Alvin Curran, Merzbow, Philippe Vachey, Valentyn Silvestrov). Il s’est fait remarquer en donnant des concerts fleuves de durées exceptionnelles tels que l’intégrale Philip Glass en douze heures non-stop, l’intégrale des 15 Klavierstücke de Karlheinz Stockhausen ou encore l’intégrale des œuvres pour piano d’Erik Satie (qui attire plus de 14000 personnes lors de son exécution à la Salle P. Norman Harper was organ scholar at Gonville & Caius College Cambridge, where he studied composition with Peter Tranchell and organ with Peter Le Huray and Gillian Weir. His career has included director of music posts at churches and schools in the north-west of England and in London. Most of his compositions have been written for choirs he has directed, including Mass for Lower Voices, for the Lay Clerks of St George’s Metropolitan Cathedral Southwark, and Unison Canticles and Mass of St George for the Cathedral Girls’ Choir. Most recently he composed Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis for the Northern Cathedral Consort. Norman has performed widely as organ soloist and accompanist in the UK and abroad, including solo recitals on BBC Radio 3, and he has accompanied or directed numerous broadcast choral services on BBC radio and television. He commissioned two organ works from the composer Thomas Hyde: Præludium (1996) and Lucis Creator (2005). Norman gave Lucis Creator its premiere in a recital at King’s College Cambridge, and has recorded both works on CD together with music by Timothy Craig Harrison. In 2018 he retired from his post as director of music at St George’s Cathedral and remains active as a composer and organist.

After Outer Edges we were trying to find a new direction for Noisia. This resulted in an extensive journey that took us through a lot of new ideas and music.

Although we eventually decided to stop, we are proud of the things we made along the way, and these tunes were always meant to be part of a larger whole.

So before we finally close the book on Noisia, we wanted to share them with you, on one last album.
Previously released or newly finished, they all represent directions we enjoyed exploring.In the end, we didn’t manage to figure things out. But we did get closer.

‘Closer’ includes previously released singles and new collaborations with Skrillex, Camo & Krooked, Halogenix, Black Sun Empire, IMANU and Posij.
