Strong but delicate, deliberate but subtle, driven but supple, Masaaki Suzuki’s 2005 recording of Bach’s Italian Concerto and French Overture for harpsichord are quite convincing in their own distinctive way. In Suzuki’s hands, the opening crash of the Italian Concerto is as instantly arresting as the powerful opening prelude and fugue from the French Overture is immediately appealing. Yet the concerto’s following Andante is as emotionally nuanced as the overture’s Sarabande is deeply affecting and the concerto’s closing Presto is as joyfully rambunctious as the overture’s Gigue is relentlessly propulsive. Better yet are Suzuki’s performances of Bach’s own transcription of his A minor Sonata for solo violin as a D minor sonata for solo harpsichord. Here, Suzuki’s playing and interpretation are all of a piece; a deep, dark, soulful, and sometimes scary piece, true, but still one overwhelming piece. And whatever the work, Suzuki’s playing is always first rate, if not quite as strikingly virtuosic as some full-time harpsichordists – after all, Suzuki’s full-time job since 1990 has been directing the Bach Collegium of Japan, the group recording Bach’s complete cantatas for BIS. Captured in crisp sound, this recording will please Suzuki’s many fans in Japan and around the world.

Along with Gary Moore, Michael Schenker never quite reached the same level of acclaim stateside as he did in Europe (and other parts of the world), despite possessing exceptional, and quite influential, six-string skills. Schenker was born on January 10, 1955 in Sarstedt, West Germany, and it was his older brother, Rudolf, who sparked the youngster’s interest in guitar at an early age.

Midori was born in Japan in 1971 as the daughter of a violinist and an engineer. She started playing the violin at an early age, first under the guidance of her mother Setsu Gotō. She attended primary school from 1978.
In 1981, Midori participated in the Aspen Music Festival summer course led by Dorothy DeLay. Her mother accompanied her during her stay in America and made a successful effort with DeLay to enroll her daughter at the Juilliard School in New York.

An opéra-comique by an Italian composer? It was a rarity in its day, but after the “narrowly averted disaster” of the premiere, Donizetti’s La Fille du régiment became a huge success, not least because of the high Cs demanded of Tonio in the famous tenor aria, “Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!” The story revolves around Marie, the regimental canteen girl whose lover Tonio joins the army to be near her when she is elevated to the peerage. Netflix Music will release a soundtrack album for the Netflix original film The Wonder. The album features the movie’s original music composed by Matthew Herbert (Disobedience, A Fantastic Woman, The Beast Must Die, Gloria Bell, The Cave, The Responder, Temple). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, November 16 and will be available to stream/download on Amazon and any other major digital music services. The Wonder is directed by Sebastián Lelio and stars Florence Pugh, Tom Burke, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Niamh Algar, Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, Elaine Cassidy, Dermot Crowley, Brían F. O’Byrne, David Wilmot, Ruth Bradley, Caolán Byrne and Josie Walker. The period drama based on Emma Donoghue’s novel follows a nurse who travels from England to a remote Irish village in 1862 to investigate a young girl’s supposedly miraculous fast. The first complete recording of the rarely performed Naples version from 1651 of Claudio Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea convinces with great joy of playing and shows the well-known story about love, seduction and power in a new light. Both the music and the text differ in many places from the earlier version from Venice in 1643, allowing the story of Poppea and Emperor Nero to be experienced anew, wonderfully performed on period instruments by the Cantus Firmus Consort under Andreas Reize, who has been the new Thomaskantor in Leipzig since September 2021. The elaborate CD production was created on the sidelines of the production at Schloss Waldegg / Solothurn in the summer of 2021.

He begins with classical training studies at the Academy of Musical Art in Varese, personally followed by Maestro Tenzi. He attends the Civic Jazz Courses in Milan, joining the “Franco Cerri Guitar 4et with whom he records the discs” Cerri & Cerri “(1994) and” En Souvenir de Milan “(1995). He also collaborates with Cerri on the publication of the “Jazz Guitar Manual” a issues published by Fabbri (1996). Still with this formation in 1993 he participated in the “Clusone Jazz Festival” and in the “Monteroduni di Isernia Festival” and in 1994 in the “Iseo jazz ’94”. In 1998 he took part in the recording of Paolo Paliaga’s album “Azul” with the “Horizont Quartet” with Nicola Stranieri on drums and Carlos Buschinial on bass. His first work as a quartet (Luca Necciari – double bass, Marco Zanoli – drums) “Lights and Shadows” comes out of the Siena workshop led by the pianist Stefano Battaglia in 2005. 2007 marks his entry into the Milanese Consevatorio and in 2008 he wins the selection to participate in the “Prize of the Arts” of the Italian Conservatories in Messina, arriving as a finalist with his project in collaboration with the pianist Gianluca Di Ienno. Lorenzo Serafin on double bass and Michele Salgarello on drums complete the line-up. With this rhythm in 2010 he published “Schiuma” and with the inclusion of Antonio Zambrini on piano and Mirco Mariottini on clarinets he published in 2011 his third work “Whistle this”.

Musician and teacher, Francesco Durante was so known at his time, that his name was given to a compositional school (that of the “durantisti”). He composed mostly vocal music, especially sacred, of which his keyboard works make up a limited part, where virtuosity is extremely common; elements like the very rapid scales, the arpeggios or the crossing of the hands are also widely found in other contemporaries from Naples, but his writing preserves characteristic features which are absolutely personal.
