The Danish jazz vocalist/composer Sinne Eeg studied at the Academy of Music in Esbjerg in 1997 where she graduated in 2003. She is highly acclaimed and is considered a major talent among the best of female jazz vocalists in Scandinavia. For the most part, she sings songs in English. Her distinctive vocals have earned her a loyal and ever growing fan base around the world as well as in her native country. As a singer, she is influenced by Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, but with her personal touch of soft darkness, Sinne keeps the Scandinavian melancholy settled in her music. The Best of Sinne Eeg release features a variety of songs such as Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music”, to Ellington’s “In A Sentimental Mood”, to Lennon & McCartney’s “Strawberry Fields Forever”.

Sinne Eeg is likely the finest contemporary jazz singer you’ve yet to discover. While the 40-year-old Dane, regularly ranked foremost throughout Scandinavia, has recorded seven previous albums as a leader, Dreams is only her second Stateside release. Still, it’s an ideal point of entry, a stunning showcase of not only her intoxicating style, which suggests the cashmere embrace of Nancy Wilson paired with the sharp interpretive skills of Shirley Horn, but also her songwriting acumen. Of Dreams’ 10 tracks, four are covers, including a gently inquisitive “What Is This Thing Called Love?” and a downy “I’ll Remember April”. Eeg’s lilting “Falling in Love With Love” proves a sterling showcase for her estimable bandmates: Americans Larry Koonse (guitar), Scott Colley (bass) and Joey Baron (drums) plus her fellow countryman Jacob Christoffersen (piano).

Veteran Ukrainian-American Chopin specialist Sergei Edelmann has often performed, taught, and recorded in Japan. Here he offers a program centered on the four Chopin ballades, recorded in the city of Toyama and essentially an all-Japanese project except for the nationality of the pianist. Edelmann is technically well equipped, and he’s capable of power and brilliance when he decides to turn them on. What makes these ballad performances distinctive is that he delays the fireworks a bit. Edelmann takes the title “ballade” at its word, crafting discursive interpretations that do have a storytelling quality and seem to build slowly to their powerful finales. When those do come, the payoff is impressive. His dynamic range is vast, his charisma commanding.

It’s difficult to imagine that a musical instrument as heavy and unwieldy as a double bass could sound so light and malleable as it does in this wonderful recording by double bassist Rick Stotijn. Of course it doesn’t hurt that the music performed is by the double bass composer extraordinaire Giovanni Bottesini (1821-1889). What Paganini did for the violin, or what Rossini did for Italian opera, Bottesini did for the humble double bass. A master double bassist himself, most of his compositional output was devoted to this instrument. His music is very much in the style of a Rossini opera, with a flowing cantabile style in which the instrument plays the lead role of tenor as in an opera.

Cantate Domino, recorded by legendary sound engineer Bertil Alving in 1976, is widely regarded as one of the greatest audiophile masterpieces ever recorded.
