Boris Claudio “Lalo” Schifrin (born June 21, 1932) is an Argentine-American pianist, composer, arranger and conductor. He is best known for his large body of film and TV scores since the 1950s, incorporating jazz and Latin American musical elements alongside traditional orchestrations. He is a five-time Grammy Award winner, and has been nominated for six Academy Awards and four Emmy Awards.

This recording captures the UK premiere performance of James MacMillan’s Christmas Oratorio at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, performed and recorded in the presence of the composer. The world premiere of the work was given by the Dutch Radio Philharmonic and Choir in Amsterdam in January 2021. The LPO was due to give the world premiere of the work however, due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the performance came on December 4 2021, a year later than planned.

Fridrich Bruk – born in Kharkov in 1937 and a Finnish resident since 1974 – made his name as a composer of tangos. But the heart of his music lies in a series of (to date) 21 symphonies, which have a strong narrative element, some reflecting Jewish themes, others inspired by Karelia and Finland. The three most recent together form a kind of meta-symphony premised on the persecution of the Jews in the first half of the twentieth century. Bruk’s kaleidoscopic use of orchestral colour, his angular but expressive melodies and his dramatic musical language reflect this urge to chronicle the outrage visited on his fellow Jews – and which directly impinged on his own life.

The London Symphony Orchestra’s cycle of Brahms symphonies was Bernard Haitink’s first set of recordings on the LSO Live label, originally released individually throughout 2004-05, and then as a boxed set in 2005. This collection of remastered recordings is now available on SACD, and digitally in spatial audio. Bernard Haitink’s revelatory Brahms recordings with the LSO have demonstrated why fresh new interpretations of his major works are so important, and why the composer’s music is still so relevant today. After struggling for years to come to terms with his fear of comparison to Beethoven, Brahms finally completed his First Symphony at the age of 43. It was hailed as a triumph and the remaining three symphonies followed relatively easily. His Symphony No.2 overflows with a relaxed, pastoral beauty, while the Third Symphony contains some of the most dramatic music Brahms was to compose. Finally, loaded with German Romanticism and including variations on a Bach cantata, Brahms’ final symphony is a remarkable example of his mastery of symphonic composition. A rich, warm work that builds on a sense of movement and intensity right up to the final bars. Along with the symphonies, this release also includes Brahms’ Double Concerto, Tragic Overture and Serenade No.2.

Louis Lortie’s Chopin series is achieving landmark status, as confirmed by the increasingly enthusiastic reviews of progressive volumes. This fifth one sumptuously highlights the Polish influences in Chopin’s music, offering gems from among the mazurkas and polonaises. Relatively brief in duration and simple in structure, the mazurkas reveal other aspect of Chopin’s music: quirky melodies, strangely chromatic harmonies, oddly accented rhythms, irregular phrase lengths, and wildly contrasting keyboard textures. The vocalises by Janis Ivanovs sung by the Grammy Award winning Latvian Radio Choir see the world-wide release for the very first time with this album.
vanovs, perhaps the greatest of Latvian symphonic composers, wrote the vocalises from the mid-1960s up until a year before his death, and they are dominated by the autumnal, elegiac mood characteristic of his later works. As soundscapes with imaginatively programmatic titles, the vocalises call to mind a series of compositions from Ivanovs’ youth (symphonic paintings, solo songs, arrangements of folk songs) that were also dedicated to the nature of his homeland and its beauty, sanctity and mystery.
In a way, they form an arc connecting the end of his life back to its beginning. Compared to the earlier works, however, the vocalises have the more serene balance and enlightenment that comes from viewing life and the world from a greater distance.
