Federico Colli – Bach: Keyboard Works (2019)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 59:42 minutes | 961 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Chandos
Known for his highly imaginative and philosophical approaches to his musical presentations, Federico Colli is back with a second album on Chandos. Having begun with Scarlatti sonatas, he now turns his hand to the great master J.S. Bach to explore the relationship between Bach’s music for keyboard and what Colli regards as its transcendent quality, its universal beauty. In a personal note for the booklet, Colli explains how he arrived at the extraordinary interpretations captured here. The relationship he explores is discoverable in the Italian Concerto and Partita No. 4, but it is in Ferruccio Busoni’s arrangement of Bach’s Chaconne that the relationship, in his view, becomes clear. Colli offers the listener a vivid interpretation which links the progress of the piece, rich in symbolic detail, to important stages in the life, and afterlife, of Christ, different re-iterations of the theme and of the tonalities corresponding with key moments in the religious narrative. As always, Colli gives deeply felt and exciting performances, his irrepressible personality and flair evident throughout.

All the arrangements are by Iain Farrington and recorded here for the first time.

Ronald Center (1913-1973) is sometimes described as “the Scottish Bart’ok”, and his music does indeed capture some of the stark, wild energy of the Scottish landscape in a style of Bart’okian asperity. These three string quartets show him, in his northeast corner of Scotland, to have been fully conversant with the quartets being written around the same time by Barber, Britten and Shostakovich, but their direct manner, terse expression, wiry humour and roots in Scottish folk-music ensure that Center is his own man.

His current project with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony is again another great symphonic cycle: the six symphonies by Denmark’s most famous composer, Carl Nielsen (1865 – 1931), whose 150th anniversary is celebrated this year.

Florent Marie – Giovanni Antonio Terzi: Lute Music (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:11:47 minutes | 2,71 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Carpe Diem Records
French lutenist Florent Marie presents a collection of solo lute works by Giovanni Antonio Terzi (fl. 1580-1600). Terzi was a composer addressing modernity, as well as being a true European. The purpose of this recording is to try and supplement previous ones by emphasizing Terzi’s solo pieces, whose variety and quality have hardly been explored up to now. Music has always played an important part in Florent’s family: Singing polyphonic music and having a lute-making father—who built most of his instruments—prob-ably explains why he chose to devote himself to the lute family. At the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyon he obtained his lute qualifications in Eugène Ferré’s class (2006) and discovered with Jean-Yves Haymoz the techniques of polyphonic improvisation, thus becoming one of the first lutenists to improvise ricercari in public.

For this his second volume of Scarlatti Sonatas, Federico Colli takes as his starting point the double sonata Kk 63 and Kk 64. They are two dances, the first (G major) full of vivacity and happiness, the second (D minor) full of indignation and peremptoriness. Working from this concept that opposition is needed to truly experience beauty, Colli has created his own personal double sonatas by pairing works with contrasting tempi, dynamics, character, or feeling. Like the first volume, the album was recorded on a Steinway Model D at Potton Hall in Suffolk.

Although he is regarded as a major composer of the Twentieth Century, Bartók himself attached equal importance to his career as a pianist and to his study of folk music.
Bartók’s piano works lie at the intersection of these three activities. These pieces were often the laboratories for his stylistic advances; but every bar of them exudes the folklore of Central Europe and the Hungarian composer’s love for nature.
