Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © KGLW
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s sense of unfettered sonic exploration makes it easy to mistake them for a long-forgotten relic of the psych explosion of the 1960s. With a far-out sound that, at times, feels barely held together, King Gizzard evoke the eclectic rock experimentation of Frank Zappa’s early work with the Mothers of Invention, the anything-goes feeling of the Flaming Lips, and the demented glee of a random, obscure ’60s group plucked from a Pebbles compilation as they follow their musical flights of fancy wherever they might lead.

An interesting release from Killswitch Engage, metalcore royalty who at the beginning of 2020 had just commenced touring their latest album Atonement. But found themselves heading home as the pandemic struck, licking their wounds and unable to take one of their strongest records out on the road, for shows that included support from former vocalist Howard Jones’s band Light The Torch; Atonement featuring the crushing track (‘The Signal Fire’) which saw Jones trading vocals with current (and original) singer Jesse Leach, and the tour providing the perfect opportunity for both frontmen to hit the stage together.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © CAvi-music
The years between 1900 and 1914 are perhaps among the most exciting in European music history. It was during these years that what is now commonly referred to as musical modernism emerged. It is the time when the great European “schools” of the musical avant-garde take shape in Paris, Berlin, St. Petersburg and especially in Vienna, and when music fans out into a variety of aesthetics, styles and genres that are reflected in the set of terms we use today to try to get to grips with the art of this era: Impressionism, Expressionism, Art Nouveau, Neoclassicism, Folklorism, Late Romanticism / Post-Romanticism, Symbolism, etc. The programme selection is grouped around two works written in Vienna in 1913, in this “summer of the century” (Florian Illies) that ends the long 19th century and heralds the dark 20th century: Alban Berg’s Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano op. 5 and Egon Kornauth’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano. It is the year of scandalous premieres: Schönberg’s Gurrelieder, Berg’s Altenberlieder, Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps, but also the less scandalous ones of Debussy’s Images pour Orchestre, Reger’s Toteninsel, Sibelius Luonnotar, de Falla’s La vida breve and Strauss’s Festliches Präludium.

There are stories here. There are memories and dreams, keepsakes and wishes. There are truths told straight and fashioned into shapes. There is struggle and resilience. There is humanity. Throughout, there is music.
Music as connection, sustenance, hope, joy. Ancient-to-future music fed by the ancestors and sent spinning through space and time. Music that bestows agency on the displaced and traumatised, opening the door of the cosmos and embracing the self-determination, the liberation, on the other side.
M’berra. A visionary trip by an artist searching for a new language of storytelling.
