Third World started when keyboard player Michael “Ibo” Cooper and guitarist (and cellist) Stephen “Cat” Coore (son of former Deputy Prime Minister David Coore), who had originally played in The Alley Cats and then Inner Circle, subsequently left to form their own band along with Inner Circle singer Milton “Prilly” Hamilton. They recruited bassist Richard Daley, formerly of Ken Boothe’s band and Tomorrow’s Children, and added drummer Carl Barovier and former Inner Circle percussionist Irvin “Carrot” Jarrett before making their live debut in early 1974.

The quartet get some really top-shelf help from David Van DePitte on arrangements — and he brings in almost a Van McCoy sort of spirit to the set — that great maestro update of east coast group soul sounds, taking them past the rougher edges of the indie scene, but always without dampening their soul! The group have New Orleans roots, and ended up in Detroit – but to our ears, this set sparkles with the best east coast material of the time – particularly that of groups coming from New York.

The work was premiered on May 29, 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, as a staged production of Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, with Pierre Monteux conducting. Monteux also led the first SFS performances of the original 1913 version in February 1939. Over the years the score has appeared in various revisions. This performance uses the edition marked “Revised 1947; New edition 1967,” brought out by Boosey & Hawkes, which had just acquired the work’s copyright.

The 2023 digital edition of the album features two new tracks, ‘Cherry Tree Carol’ and ‘White Wine In The Sun’, the first of which you can hear below – it beats most of what you’ll hear in our Christmas chart this year including Ladbaby (but probably not including ‘Stop the Cavalry’ to be a fair. As soon as your eyes set on Nefeli Fasouli, it is as if “Your World” is filled with light, smiling at you. It’s hard not to single her out in a crowded room, as her smile illuminates the space. Her voice, her aura, her profiles, her moves and gestures, evoke the Nouvelle Vague girls of the French cinema, even though she is a girl living in today’s Athens.
