Forever paired in the jazz consciousness with its follow-up—1962’s Waltz for Debby, which was recorded on the same day—Sunday at the Village Vanguard was the first album by the Bill Evans Trio to be released after the untimely death of bassist Scott LaFaro. While nobody likely ever accused Riverside head Orrin Keepnews of being overly sentimental, pushing this album out —along with a “Featuring Scott LaFaro” subtitle—just weeks later was reportedly a decision made by both Keepnews and Evans together, to highlight the way that this trio worked together in a live environment and how LaFaro was integral to that interplay.

Stan Getz & Bill Evans is an album by jazz saxophonist Stan Getz & pianist Bill Evans recorded in 1964 for the Verve label but only 1st released 1973.
Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. Digitally remastered by Dennis Drake (Polygram Studios). The only studio meeting between Stan Getz & Bill Evans took place over 2 days in 1964, with the aggressive drummer Elvin Jones & either Richard Davis or Ron Carter on bass. It is peculiar that Verve shelved the results for over a decade before issuing any of the music, though it may have been felt that Getz & Evans hadn’t had enough time to achieve the desired chemistry, though there are memorable moments. The punchy take of “My Heart Stood Still,” the elegant interpretation of “Grandfather’s Waltz,” & the lush setting of the show tune “Melinda” all came from the 1st day’s session, with Davis on bass. (Evidently he was unavailable the following day, so Carter replaced him.) Evans’ driving, challenging “Funkallero” is the obvious highlight from day 2, though the gorgeous “But Beautiful” & the breezy setting of “Night & Day” are also enjoyable. Only the brief version of “Carpetbagger’s Theme,” which seems badly out of place & suggestive of the label’s interference with the session, is a bit of a disappointment. (It’s not included on this SHM version) Obviously neither Getz nor Evans liked the tune, as they go through the motions in a very brief performance. [Some reissues add 3 unissued alternate takes, though additional material from the sessions was included in the box set The Complete Bill Evans on Verve.]~ Ken Dryden

Influential and innovative jazz pianist Bill Evans took time off from his regular trio to record Empathy with drummer Shelly Manne (who shares equal billing) and bassist Monty Budwig. Critics noted that the impromptu collaboration seemed to loosen Evans up, inspiring a lighter, freer and more relaxed performance on this album than on his previous recordings with his usual bandmates.

“Whether the Village Vanguard group could have surpassed or extended the achievements of June 1961 is a matter of speculation. Evans continued to make great music for nearly two decades, but he must have known deep down that the peak was behind him.” – PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ
“Sadly, this is the last testament to a group that would end with the sudden death of Scott LaFaro a few days after these recordings. Waltz for Debby is one of those albums where you can discover something new with every listen.” – JAZZ MAGAZINE

Things Are Simple is the new bluegrass banjo release from 2022 Steve Martin Banjo Prize recipient Bill Evans. Recorded over the span of three years, Bill assembled some of his favorite musicians to record Things Are Simple, including John Reischman (mandolin), Jim Nunally (guitar), Chad Manning (fiddle), and Sharon Gilchrist (bass). Four tracks, all original Bill Evans instrumentals, are powered by the incredible twin fiddle work of Chad and Brandon Godman and New Acoustic Music legend Darol Anger. Bill’s last solo outing, In Good Company, topped both folk and bluegrass charts and was named a best of year album by many media outlets. The title track “Things Are Simple,” is a duet with his wife Babi with fingerpicked guitar and a string quartet accompaniment arranged by Alisa Rose. On the instrumental side, there are six original Bill Evans compositions, a John Reischman jam standard (“Nesser”), and an old-time favorite (“Chinquapin Hunting”).
