Vivaldi’s Sonatas for two violins, anco senza basso se piace (also without bass if preferred), represent one of the innumerable peaks of his compositional prowess. They are structured in three movements, each of which develops in a bipartite manner, making evident reference to concerto form, with only the internal bipartite structure alluding to sonata form. This distinguishes Vivaldi’s approach to the duo without bass from that of some of his European colleagues, namely Telemann (Sonates sans basse, 1727) and Leclair (Sonates à deux violons sans basse Op.3, 1730).

Maucha Adnet – Songs I Learned From Jobim (1997) [Japan 2018] SACD ISO + DSF DSD64 + Hi-Res FLAC

Maucha Adnet – Songs I Learned From Jobim (1997) [Japan 2018]
SACD Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 52:08 minutes | Front/Rear Covers | 1,52 GB

or FLAC (carefully converted & encoded to tracks) 24bit/48 kHz | Front/Rear Covers | 634 MB

Jobim himself described Adnet’s voice as “deep, rich and mysterious” not just because of the alliteration. Adnet’s beautiful instrument gets the perfect setting from these musicians and arrangements: not only is the estimable Trio da Paz on this recording (Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, Duduka Da Fonseca), but there are wonderful performances from trombonist Jay Ashby, flugellers Claudio Roditi and Randy Brecker, and pianist Hugo Fattoruso, whose spare, lyrical style evokes The Man himself. Songs I Learned From Jobim contains a full range of moods, fine musicianship and excellent material. It’s also a must-hear for Jobim completists, since it offers such unexpected and delightful insights into his musical self.

Body and Soul is an album by Joe Jackson, released in March 1984. The album was Jackson’s seventh studio album, and his first fully digital project. Body and Soul is a landmark recording as well, being an early digital recording captured on a 32-track 3M system in New York City’s Masonic Lodge. The vast reverberant space of the hall is beautifully drawn, and yet Joe and the band sound positively explosive. Body and Soul is remastered to DSD by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. The results are amazing! Body and Soul has never sounded so fullbodied. In addition to the wonderful ambience of the Masonic Lodge, the imaging is more three-dimensional and holographic than ever.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © NTS

NTS presents European Primitive Guitar, a compilation of instrumental guitar compositions, mapping out European analogues of the American Primitive Guitar movement, spearheaded by John Fahey in the 1950s.

European Primitive Guitar spans works directly influenced by and responding to Fahey’s approach to composition, alongside works by artists that arrived at similar conclusions independently. The music is, at once, both starkly traditional and contemporary.

This is no more evident than with the opening song on the compilation, Spanish guitarist Albert Giménez’s 1982 composition Conte Xinès. The song draws on numerous idioms of music – flamenco, jazz, ambient music, and guitar soli – within its shimmering arpeggios, culminating as a decidedly Spanish music that has collected the ephemera of the guitar’s travels before returning home.

The compilation also explores wider ideas around experimentalism happening in Europe during the time of this anthology. German composer Hans Reichel not only developed new ways of playing the instrument, but also new ways of building guitars – pushing the boundary of what a guitar could be and how it could sound.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 56:48 minutes | 576 MB | Genre: Jazz Fusion, Jazz Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Dyad Records

After 20 years as a working unit John Etheridge and his Blue Spirits trio have appropriately released a live album that captures the band’s brilliance in the area of blues inflected jazz. Guitarist John Etheridge hardly needs introduction having worked as a solo artist and bandleader and in lengthy associations with some of the greatest names of 20th century music – Stephane Grappelli, Soft Machine, John Williams, Nigel Kennedy, Andy Summers – which give some idea of his range – over 53 years as a working musician. The music here subtly reveals all these influences, brought to bear in an organ trio setting.

With Etheridge is Pete Whittaker, the most reactive and sensitive organist, a strong soloist with great groove and on drums, George Double, a man with just the right feel for this music. Together they make a very special sound, quite distinct from other organ trios, by turns aggressive and tender, swinging and rocking.

James Strauss (b. November 29, 1974 Recife, Pernambuco) is a Brazilian flautist and musicologist.

Strauss began taking violin lessons from his father when he was four years old, but switched to the flute a few years later. He graduated from the Paris Conservatory with Pierre-Yves Artaud, Maurice Pruvot, and Lazslo Hadadi. Concurrently he studied Flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal. His career as a flute soloist started in 1991 with his performance with the Festival Orchestra of the 23rd Music Festival in Campos do Jordão, conducted by Júlio Medaglia.

In 1999, he moved to Finland, and began looking for Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky’s legendary “Flute Concerto”, of which Rampal had seen a page in the 1960s in the Soviet Union. He eventually found three pieces of the original composition (one in St. Petersburg, one in Finland, one in Klin) and reconstructed from them the Concertstück for Flute, TH 247, now catalogued as a posthumous work by Tchaikovsky. From 2017 to 2020 James Strauss publishes the albums Mozart Discoveries, Latin Connections, Venezuelan Elegy, produced by Danilo Alvarez.

We’re the JACK Quartet, a string quartet that champions music by 20th- and 21st-century composers.

We curate and perform programs that include a variety of musical styles by established and emerging artists. With each program, we aspire to create transformative experiences. The music we play asks audiences to listen with their whole beings. With close listening, music has the power to broaden perspectives.

Since our founding in 2005, we have been introducing audiences world-wide to a range of experimental chamber music. We perform everywhere from classical music halls to art galleries to bars. We commission new music and collaborate with composers to bring it to life. We commit to helping dismantle outmoded classical music pipelines for composers through our JACK Studio program, which includes residencies, commissions, readings, and recordings. We’re the Quartet in Residence at The New School in New York City, and we teach at music festivals, conservatories, and universities.
