Distinguishing itself from Animal Collective’s expansive catalog, Isn’t It Now? is the first Animal Collective album since Centipede Hz (2012) that was recorded with all four members in the same room at the same time. To bring it all together, the band enlisted multi-Grammy winning producer Russell Elevado (D’Angelo, Al Green, Alicia Keys, The Dandy Warhols) to co-produce alongside the band. Across its 9 tracks, Isn’t It Now? has something for everyone from the catchy bassline on the highly-repeatable single “Gem & I” to the heady 22min centrepiece “Defeat”.

Animal Collective have many, many strengths but brevity has never really been one of them. Until now, that is, because their M.O. for the follow-up to 2012’s Centipede Hz was “no B.S, get in, get out material.” Recorded at the Hollywood studio where The Beach Boys created Pet Sounds, and inspired by “Cubism, Dadaism, and the distorted way those artists viewed the world”, Painting With is every bit as ambitious as previous Animal Collective records. And yet, out of the jumble of complex polyrhythms, psychedelic synth effects and hyperactive vocal harmonies, the trio have conjured a set that’s flab-free and packed full of pop hooks.

Set in the desert of Crestone, Colorado over the course of eight days and set to an original score composed by Animal Collective’s Geologist & Deakin. Crestone follows a group of SoundCloud rappers who live in solitude, growing weed and making music for the internet. When an old friend arrives to make a movie, reality and fiction begin to blur.

Centipede Hz, the 10th Animal Collective album, follows the widely celebrated Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009) and it’s the first since Strawberry Jam (2007) to feature all four original band members: Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist and Deakin.
