Forever paired in the jazz consciousness with its follow-up—1962’s Waltz for Debby, which was recorded on the same day—Sunday at the Village Vanguard was the first album by the Bill Evans Trio to be released after the untimely death of bassist Scott LaFaro. While nobody likely ever accused Riverside head Orrin Keepnews of being overly sentimental, pushing this album out —along with a “Featuring Scott LaFaro” subtitle—just weeks later was reportedly a decision made by both Keepnews and Evans together, to highlight the way that this trio worked together in a live environment and how LaFaro was integral to that interplay.

Bill Evans refused producer Orrin Keepnews’ invitation to record a follow up album to his 1956 debut “New Jazz Conceptions” for over two years, stating that he had nothing new to say. He joined the Miles Davis quintet, participating in “Kind Of Blue”, and took his time to plan his re-emergence as a leader in his own right. “Everyone Digs Bill Evans” marked that return in 1958 but it was “Portrait In Jazz”, released a year later, that claimed his place at the forefront of jazz.

It is the first recording made by the now legendary trio of Bill Evans (piano), Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). The disc features two versions of “Blue In Green” developed for “Kind Of Blue” and it is revealing to note how the trio makes its own statement of the modal masterpiece crafted spontaneously by Miles Davis and Bill Evans in the original session. As Miles Davis noted: “Bill had this quiet fire that I loved on piano. The way he approached it, the sound he got was like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down some clear waterfall.” And this is true again in the versions of “Blue In Green” here; time stands suspended, a profound, harmonic peace has settled, now the more remarkable in the paired down shape of the trio.

Bill Evans’ chord voicings, adapted from Debussy and the impressionist composers, leave space that Scott LaFaro expertly and expressively fills. Bill Evans’ own “Peri’s Scope”and the Cole Porter standard “What Is This Thing Called Love” are stand out tracks from this point of view. Paul Motian’s drumming is nicely in balance throughout. Overall, this is an almost perfect jazz trio album.

The trio had just two years together, peaking at the Village Vanguard sessions in 1961.

Weeks later, Scott LaFaro had been killed in a car crash, setting back Bill Evans’ career and his music as much as his developing narcotic addiction.

The second album by the original Bill Evans group was recorded after the pianist, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian had spent a year working together and honing the telepathy that established a new standard for trio interaction. Featuring intimate readings of several standards, plus three compositions from the jazz world that became synonymous with the trio’s sounds, and with ample space for LaFaro’s virtuosity to shine, the album was cited by Evans years later as among his own favorite recordings. With an excellent performance of “The Boy Next Door” (omitted from the original release for lack of space) and an alternate take of “Beautiful Love,” this edition of Explorations contains all of the music preserved by one of jazz’s seminal bands on its final visit to a recording studio, plus two previously released alternate takes.

Bill Evans was left reeling by the accidental death of his brilliant bassist Scott LaFaro in mid-1961 and didn’t feel ready to record with his new bassist until nearly a year later. When he did go into the studio in May and June of 1962 with Chuck Israels and drummer Paul Motian, the “second trio” produced material for two albums that were to be among Evans’s most popular. Moonbeams includes ballad material from the sessions. The rest of the music from the sessions is in How My Heart Sings! In Moonbeams, Evans did some of his most introspective playing, his sense of loss apparent but relieved by Israels’s power and empathy. “Polka Dots and Moonbeams,” “If You Could See Me Now,” and the others represent Evans at his best, his lyricism underlaid with rhythmic firmness even in the extraordinarily slow “In Love in Vain.”
