This new album is delivered only 8 months after the previous album “Today Is Another Day”. It was recorded entirely new in New York with a trio with Yoshi Waki (b) and John Davis (ds). The concept is a tribute album dedicated to Wayne Shorter, the great jazz saxophonist who passed away in March. After opening with “Dolce Vita” and “To S.,” two new songs written by Yamanaka for this album, the album features a number of songs covering Shorter’s career, including “Yes or No,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Footprints. The arrangements and performances, sometimes bold, sometimes delicate, are a must for all jazz fans, with the occasional addition of an organ. The album ends with two songs dedicated to Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also passed away in March.

Chihiro Yamanaka is a Japanese jazz pianist and composer, born in Kiryū, Gunma Prefecture. As of 2012, she was based in New York City.

Yamanaka studied at the Berklee College of Music and is an alumna of the Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead residency program. She has played and recorded with the New York-based DIVA Jazz Orchestra, led by Sherrie Maricle, but is best known for her small group recordings, which are typically trios and have featured bassists such as Larry Grenadier and Robert Hurst, and drummers such as Jeff Ballard and Jeff “Tain” Watts.

Chihiro Yamanaka ( 山中千尋 ) is a Japanese jazz pianist and composer. She has more than a dozen recordings released under her own name, principally on the Verve label, most of which have been released internationally. As of 2012, she is based in New York City. “Reminiscence”, her eighth album as leader, is packed with her unique personality, deriving from the accumulation of her years of colorful activities. She creates her unmistakable world by integrating her own swing, bluesiness, funkiness, as well as her free viewpoint towards a wide range of music genres, all in line. A contemporary jazz piano which stretches outwardly after absorbing all of the old school jazz piano – experiencing her free-spirited and full-of-personality groove is part of the thrilling joy only jazz can provide. This album seems to have a special meaning to her. The title is a reminder of the nuclear accident in her hometown of Fukushima.
