This is violinist Ji Young Lim’s debut recording, a captivating programme of sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven. She is partnered by pianist Dong Hyek Lim, who launched his relationship with Warner Classics with a Chopin recital in 2015. (Both musicians are from South Korea, but they are not related – that they share a surname is coincidence.) Also in 2015, shortly after Ji Young Lim triumphed in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels – one of the most prestigious events of its kind – she gave a recital in Washington, D.C. where she was greeted with a standing ovation. In the words of the Washington Post, her programme – which included Mozart’s Sonata No. 18, the opening item on this disc – “showed off an impressive arsenal of strengths — a range of colors that extended from a brilliant shimmer on top … to an almost viola-like richness and graininess on the bottom, the ability to race from one end of the finger-board to the other with a tap dancer’s agility and precision, a dramatic flair and an inclination to risk-taking that allowed her to revel in a funky, bluesy note-bending for her Gershwin encore.”

Dong Hyek Lim takes two pianistic roles on this all-Rachmaninov album: soloist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Alexander Vedernikov in the much-loved Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor, and duo partner to his mentor, the great Martha Argerich, in the composer’s two-piano transcription of the enthralling and enigmatic Symphonic Dances. Lim’s credentials in Russian music are rooted in the formative period he spent as a young student at Moscow’s Central School of Music and Conservatory.

Dong Hyek Lim has long wanted to devote an entire album to Schubert. Now he has recorded two of the three epic piano sonatas that Schubert produced in the final year of his short but prolific life: No 20 in A D959 and No 21 in B flat D960. “These sonatas are both deep, dark, late Schubert,” says Lim, “but they make a good pairing because they are highly contrasted… In D959 Schubert is more determined and clear about what he wants to do. D960 is more Romantic and fragile. I wouldn’t say that Schubert knew he was going to die that year, but I can still feel the depth of these sonatas. Schubert occupies a place between late Beethoven and Romanticism. I feel I must play his music in a Classical way, but I must also let it sing.”

Dong Hyek Lim arrived on the scene at just 18 years old ‘in a blaze of pianistic glory’ (Gramophone) with a debut album championed by his mentor Martha Argerich. The South Korean virtuoso went on to take third prize in the 15th International Chopin Piano Competition. Ten years later, following studies with Emmanuel Ax at the Juilliard School in New York, his artistry has matured and deepened for this long-awaited recital of the 24 Preludes and other works by Chopin – a composer who remains especially close to his heart. His new recital of works by Chopin, centred on the set of 24 Preludes, continues a relationship with the label that goes back to 2002. Lim, then just 18 years old, was introduced to the world with a CD in the ‘Martha Argerich Presents’ series. Gramophone noted his arrival “in a blaze of pianistic glory”, while in France, the album was awarded the prestigious Diapason d’Or. It was followed in 2008 with an album of Bach’s Goldberg Variations coupled with the Bach-Busoni Chaconne. The French magazine Le Monde de la Musique awarded it a ‘Choc’, while Gramophone wrote that: “There’s no question that he’s a very impressive pianist … [who gives] the sense of profound pleasure in the music … And he’s not afraid to experiment with what he can do in this music … An artist to watch.”
