For his latest release on Sony Classical, pianist Lucas Debargue turns to one of the unsung treasuries of the piano repertoire – the works of Gabriel Fauré. In a remarkable undertaking, Debargue has recorded every note of his compatriot’s piano music – all on a newly designed piano rarely heard on record until now. For this recording, Debargue has reexamined Fauré’s entire output for piano, starting from the beginning. Across 4 CDs, he ‘retraces the journey that the composer had taken from his earliest works for the piano to his last contribution to the medium.’ Recording it, reports the pianist, has ‘transformed my life both as a person and as a musician.’

After acclaimed recordings of music by the great masters, Lucas Debargue shines much-needed light on a composer he is determined must be heard: Milosz Magin (1929 -1999). “Magin’s style is capable of both enchanting and surprising us,” the French pianist says. “Few composers of his time were so open to cultivating the art of writing beautiful melodies.” Born in Poland in 1929, Magin settled in Paris in 1960. After a car accident in 1963 he traded a career as one of Poland’s greatest pianists…

In 2015, young French pianist Lucas Debargue set the classical world alight at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Although he took home ‘just’ fourth prize, he also received the coveted Music Critic’s Award (all disciplines). This is all the more impressive when you consider the sort of ‘anti’ child prodigy that we have on our hands here; Debargue is a musician who arrived very late to the piano, and is entirely self-taught. ”Not since Glenn Gould graced Moscow with his presence, or the victory of Van Cliburn at the Tchaikovsky competition during the cold war, has a foreign pianist generated such excitement”, wrote the Huffington Post, known for being difficult to please. The program here was recorded in live concert at the Salle Cortot in Paris back in November 2015, and we’re delighted to add another award to a growing list for the young Frenchman, our Qobuzism award for excellence! The adventure has most certainly just begun for this exciting prospect in Classical Music.

The new double album by Martin Fröst is dedicated to the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. For the first time he can be heard here as a conductor – with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, of which he is the musical director. The program includes Mozart’s late works, which were created at particularly precarious moments for the composer personally – and which, apparently, are of selected intensity and beauty regardless. The subtitle “Ecstasy and Abyss” – “Ecstasy and Abyssalness” – takes this unusual temporal coincidence into account. Martin Fröst can be heard with his third recording of the clarinet Concerto in A major K. 622, which he plays on the basset clarinet, as composed by Mozart. Martin Fröst also conducts the “Prague” Symphony in D major K. 504 and Mozart’s last symphony, the “Jupiter” Symphony in C major K. 551. The French pianist Lucas Debargue is the soloist at the piano concerto in C major K. 503, soprano Elin Rombo sings the concert aria “Ch’io mi scordi di te? – Non temer, amato bene” KV 505 and mezzo-soprano Ann Hallenberg the aria of Sesto “Parto, ma tu, ben mio” from the late seria opera “La Clemenza di Tito” KV 621, again accompanied by Martin Fröst on basset clarinet.
