The music for ‘Certainty of Tides’ was initially recorded with the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra with Nils Petter Molvaer as a soloist in 2020. He had asked several wonderful Norwegian composers to arrange a set of music from his back catalogue. ‘Have a listen to the recordings I did with the orchestra and tell me what you think’ he told Norwegian composer, musician, and producer Jan Bang. Since the original recording was close mic’ed for broadcasting purposes, Bang saw an unfulfilled potential in the material due to lack of space in the initial recordings. Bang came up with the idea of re-amping the mixes playing the music through speakers in a concert house followed by re-recording of the result through distant microphones. With 76 speakers (one per instrument) carefully placed exactly like the orchestra would have been seated onstage, ‘Certainty of Tides’ was recorded from microphones strategically placed in the large hall of Kilden Concert House with phenomenal acoustics. The re-amping and re-recording produced astonishing results. Some of the pieces needed additional colour. Bang invited two of his highly talented electronic music students at the University of Agder (Kristian Isachsen and Even Sefenias Sigurdsen Frodesønn Røsstad). Both given freedoms to create their own sound based on their own personal taste. The final mixes were put together by Øyvind Kurszus at Kilden Studios supervised by both students, Molvaer and Bang. Helge Steen has mastered the recording. Knut Sævik has re-sampled the drum track (played by Peter Baden) on ‘Simply so’ and mixed the Song as well.

Nils Petter Molvaer is one of the most prominent performers within an electroacoustic jazz hybrid that has, since the 1990’s, become a genre all of its own. In this domain, sometimes referred to as ‘future jazz’ or ‘nu jazz’, the Norwegian composer is both a pioneer and a veteran having been one of the first jazz musicians to embrace the new digital and electronica tendencies at the turn of the century. With his signature sound that brings together poignant trumpet and dynamic electronic soundscapes, Molvaer has achieved heavyweight status for showing a path forward for the genre in a new age, a path which, faithful to jazz’ past, remains cool all the way. His upcoming release, ‘Stitches’, is no different. Unafraid to explore new sounds and emotions, Molvaer once again shows us that not only jazz has a future, but one that is both bright and exciting.

BMG’s new imprint Modern Recordings are to release atmospheric new album SulaMadiana by Mino Cinelu and Nils Petter Molvær on 21 August. Look for title track ’SulaMadiana’ to be released as a single on 24 July. The album title takes its name from Sula, the island off the west coast of Norway where Molvær is from, and Madiana, a synonym for Martinique, where Cinelu’s father comes from. The album pays tribute to Manu Dibango, Tony Allen and Jimmy Cobb, all recently departed.

How do you create an entire world from nothing but tones, sounds and rhythms? A world full ofwidth and depth, full of colors, movements and manifestations, with different temperatures and divergent courses of time. On “SulaMadiana”, it only takes two musicians to form such a world. Nils Petter Molvær and Mino Cinelu both came a long way until their meeting became inevitable.Cinelu gained international renown on Miles Davis’ albums such as “We Want Miles” or “Amandla”.

It is his percussive storytelling in particular which gave these records their mystical depth and spatial transparency. He has worked on several recordings from Weather Report, and, until recently, with the long term prog institution “Gong”. Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Sting, Santana, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson all made use of his skills. His CD “Quest Journey” (2002) comes across like a collection of gripping short films. In 1995, together with Dave Holland and Kevin Eubanks, he had already sparked the magic of a complete sound world once before.

Nils Petter Molvær, also known as NPM, is a Norwegian jazz trumpeter, composer, and producer. Molvær is considered a pioneer of “future jazz”, a genre that fuses jazz and electronic music. Buoyancy – the ability or tendency of something to float in water; a cheerful and optimistic attitude or disposition. Recorded with the same group he had in the studio for “Switch”, Nils Petter Molvær’s new album “Buoyancy” is the logical continuation of its predecessor, whilst also taking the music a step further. Here the group works more closely as a unit and performs the music more spontaneously in the studio. A range of soundscapes, grooves and hauntingly beautiful little melodies emerge from the trumpet master’s instrument to create an intense collection of colourful paintings in sound.
