Back to Front is a two-year concert tour by Peter Gabriel, a retrospective performance which is based on every song from his 1986 multi-platinum album So played in sequence. The backing band includes musicians that Gabriel toured with in 1986–1987 in support of the album’s initial release.
Each night of the tour is recorded and released both separately and as part of a box set entitled Back to Front: Encore Series.

We are very proud to be able to offer this exclusive audio to Society of Sound members and we asked sound engineer Ben Findlay explains the process:
The original recording was made on two-inch analog tape. Because there were so many channels they had two twenty-four track machines synchronized with timecode, and the timecode was referenced to the film, so that when they were back in the studio it was possible to resynchronize everything.
The first challenge that we had was to locate the material within Peter’s extensive tape archive. The next challenge was to copy (or transcribe) the analog audio recording to a digital format. The fact that the tapes were over 20 years old meant it was necessary to bake each reel in a laboratory oven for three days at 60°Celsius. This stabilizes the glue that binds the oxide particles to the plastic backing and which over time can become gooey and unstable. Once they have been baked this ensures the magnetically oriented particles that represent the audio recording are not rubbed off as they pass over the tape heads.
The original audio recording and the cameras were synchronised together with 24 frame / second time code, so it was essential to use an audio time code synchroniser to keep the playback analogue machine running at exactly the right speed. In essence each second of time code, and it’s corresponding audio, had to last exactly 48000 samples as it played into the digital record machine. If this didn’t happen, when you played the digitized audio back with the 24 frame picture they would run at different speeds and the audio and picture would drift apart.

This stunning live set was recorded during Peter Gabriel’s 1982 tour.

Plays Live was compiled from live recordings made at four venues across the American Midwest in late 1982 and released the following June. The sleeve notes memorably state; “Some additional recording took place not a thousand miles away from the home of the artiste. The generic term of this process is ‘cheating’”. But it’s fair to say that the essence of the live shows remains very much intact on these recordings.

Considering the slow trickle of completed albums he has released since becoming a superstar in 1986 — just two albums of songs with vocals, paired with two albums of soundtracks and two live records — deliberate is expected from Peter Gabriel, so the slow, hushed crawl of Scratch My Back is no shock. What may be a shock is that Gabriel chose to follow 2002’s Up with a covers album but, like all of his work, this 2010 record is highly conceptual no matter how minimal the end result may be. Designed as the first half of a two-part project where Gabriel would cover 12 different artists who would then return the favor by recording their own versions of Gabriel’s compositions — the counterpart album naturally bearing the title I’ll Scratch Yours — Scratch My Back divides neatly between six songs from his peers (Bowie, Paul Simon, Randy Newman, Neil Young, Lou Reed, David Byrne) and six songs from younger artists (Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Stephin Merritt, Bon Iver, Elbow, Regina Spektor). Gabriel doesn’t dodge familiar tunes, choosing to sing “Heroes” and “Street Spirit (Fade Out),” but he twists each tune to his own needs, arranging everything with nothing more than piano and strings, a change that’s almost jarring on Simon’s “The Boy in the Bubble,” yet it stays true to the undercurrent of melancholy in the melody. Indeed, all of Scratch My Back is stark, sober, and spare, delving ever deeper inward, a triumph of intellect over emotion — a noted contrast to almost all cover albums that celebrate the visceral, not the cerebral. Immediate it may not be but fascinating it is, and after hearing Gabriel turn all 12 of these songs into something unmistakably his own, the appetite is surely whetted for its companion piece.

“New Blood” is a continuum of Peter’s previous album, “Scratch My Back”, a song-swap project where he covered the songs of others, all to an orchestral backing. “He really liked what he was discovering,” explains his engineer Richard ‘Dickie’ Chappell. “As soon as we started do the covers, there was talk of applying it to his own songs. It was always an ongoing thought”. The album has been created specifically for Bowers & Wilkins’ Society Of Sound members.

And I’ll Scratch Yours (originally announced as I’ll Scratch Yours) is a compilation album by the English rock musician Peter Gabriel. Initially slated for release in 2010, the album was released on 24 September 2013.

The original concept was that And I’ll Scratch Yours would serve as a companion piece to Gabriel’s 2010 covers album Scratch My Back. The idea was to give the artists whose songs Gabriel covered on Scratch My Back a medium to reciprocate – And I’ll Scratch Yours would feature those artists covering Gabriel’s songs. However, four of the artists declined to record covers of Gabriel’s material. The release version of the album deviated from its initial concept in having two new artists (Feist and Joseph Arthur) contributing covers to the album.

The final part of the two-letter, single-syllable trilogy. Produced by Peter (and mixed by Tchad Blake and Stephen Hague). Hundreds and hundreds of hours of recordings were made, ultimately being slimmed down to the final ten tracks.

UP soon reveals itself to be another deeply personal statement, with birth and death being near-constant themes. Mostly recorded at Real World (although some initial recordings were made in Senegal, France and on a boat on the Amazon), the album sees contributions from the likes of Peter Green, Danny Thompson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Daniel Lanois, the Black Dyke Band, Peter’s daughter Melanie and the late, great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

OVO is the Gabriel-authored soundtrack to the Millennium Dome Show, the 160-artist extravaganza that underwent 999 performances during the 365 days in 2000 that the Dome was open. Helping to tell the story of three generations of the same family living through three distinct eras – the past, the present, the future – Peter’s soundtrack accordingly drew from deep, long-held tradition and from contemporary grooves. Hurdy-gurdys butted up alongside drum & bass, ancient dancing the same millennium-celebrating dance as modern.

In 2002 and 2003, following the release of his album UP, Peter Gabriel went on the road with his Growing Up tour, once again collaborating with production designer Robert Lepage to create a spectacular and theatrical live experience. The tour took in thirty-two cities across the USA, Canada and Europe and this concert performance was recorded over two nights at the Filaforum in Milan in May 2003, with Peter Gabriel and the band performing in the round at the centre of the arena.

Peter Gabriel has been working on i/o—shorthand for input/output—for 20 years now, reworking and re-recording and workshopping songs on the road. The final result is a sprawling head trip: two albums of the same songs mixed differently by, Gabriel has said, “two of the world’s best mix engineers.” Spike Stent (Ed Sheeran, Björk, Madonna) handles the so-called “Bright Side” and Tchad Blake (Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, the Black Keys) is the “Dark Side.” Comparing the two can feel like an Easter-egg hunt; choosing an overall favorite is hard and the best bet here may be to make a personal playlist combo.
