Steve Earle & The Dukes are announcing their forthcoming album “J.T.”, featuring songs from Justin Townes Earle, who passed away on August 20, 2020 in Nashville. The album will be released digitally on what would have been Justin’s 39th birthday, January 4, 2021. CD and vinyl formats will be released later this winter via New West Records.

100% of the artist advances and royalties from J.T. will be donated to a trust for Etta St. James Earle, the three-year-old daughter of Justin and Jenn Earle.

Ghosts of West Virginia centers on the Upper Big Branch coal mine explosion that killed twenty-nine men in that state in 2010, making it one of the worst mining disasters in American history. When asked about what drove him to craft his deeply evocative new album, Steve Earle says, “I thought that, given the way things are now, it was maybe my responsibility to make a record that spoke to and for people who didn’t vote the way that I did,” he says. “One of the dangers that we’re in is if people like me keep thinking that everybody who voted for Trump is a racist or an asshole, then we’re fucked, because it’s simply not true. So this is one move toward something that might take a generation to change. I wanted to do something where that dialogue could begin.”

Steve Earle picked up another Grammy nomination for his 1987 album Exit 0, the third of the young singer’s career to that point. Peaking at number 15 on the Billboard country chart, Exit 0 also introduced Earle to rock radio listeners with the song I Ain’t Ever Satisfied. This reissue, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Earle’s debut in 1986, has been remastered from the original tapes.

This is the 1987 follow-up to Steve Earle & The Dukes’ debut, „Guitar Town“. Like its predecessor, „Exit 0“ mixes toughness with tang, grit with passion, and social consciousness with rowdy fun. The Dukes were the perfect compliment to Earle’s songs, as they were able to roar as well as weep. ‘The Rain Came Down’ is a mid-tempo ballad that’s suffused with the gorgeous wash of Ken Moore’s organ playing on the choruses. The ensemble can also convincingly tackle a roadhouse rocker like ‘The Week of Living Dangerously’ with guts and aplomb. The ‘woo-woo’ vocals are a surprise out of the blue, and their contrast to the relentless of the surrounding playing can induce chills. Throughout, the sound is vivid and crystalline. Earle’s vocals buzz through and around it all like crazy and elegant embroidery on an old blanket.

On March 29, Steve Earle and The Dukes will release a tribute to one of Earle’s mentors the legendary singer-songwriter Guy Clark with GUY via New West Records.

The 16-track collection was produced by Earle and finds him backed by Kelley Looney (bass), Chris Masterson (guitar), Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle/mandolin), Ricky Ray Jackson (pedal steel) and Brad Pemberton (drums/percussion). The record also features guest appearances from the likes of Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Terry Allen, Jerry Jeff Walker and Mickey Raphael.

Steve Earle has been making intimate and personal music for more than four decades. His songwriting has made its way from Texas to Tennessee, and his education has come in the form of learning from the best.
