The Three Sounds were part of the trio explosion. Begun in 1956 in Benton Harbor, Michigan as the Four Sounds and consisting of Gene Harris on piano, Andrew Simpkins on bass and Bill Dowdy on drums (the saxophonist was dropped by the time the group moved to Washington, D.C. in 1957), the Sounds eventually migrated to New York City where they were “discovered” by Lou Donaldson. After a single record for Riverside with Nat Adderley, the Three Sounds signed an exclusive contract with Alfred Lion on Blue Note Records. Over the course of five years, the Sounds released nine LPs and appeared on albums by Lou Donaldson and Stanley Turrentine.

The deluxe CD package features a 20-page book of rare photos and memorabilia including the classic image on the cover of the trio performing at the club taken by photographer Egill Gustafson plus essays by journalist Ted Panken, Seattle Jazz DJ Jim Wilke, and Resonance producers Zev Feldman and George Klabin. In May of 2010, when Resonance Records first embarked upon the adventure of unearthing and presenting historical jazz recordings to the world, George Klabin and I began looking into various archives for tapes to release. One day, George came to me with a list of tapes he’d come across; tapes in the possession of Jim Wilke, who years earlier had been the host of a syndicated Seattle-based radio program called Jazz After Hours.

Over the course of Jim’s storied career, he’s been a staunch advocate for jazz and its greatest protagonists. Indeed, over the years, Jim has succeeded in presenting a veritable Who’s Who of ’50s and ’60s jazz greats to the public.

From February 1962 through August 1968, Jim hosted the weekly radio program, Jazz from the Penthouse, on Seattle’s KING-FM. As a well-known radio personality in the Northwest, Jim developed a working relationship with Seattle’s legendary jazz club, the Penthouse, and consequently was able to air live performances by a wide array of artists while they performed at the club. These performances were broadcast direct to the public right as they happened. The shows not only went on the air live, Jim taped them, employing professional recording techniques and equipment. Over the years, Jim amassed an impressive collection of high-quality tapes; tapes that form a unique archive of the extraordinary music heard over the course of more than half a decade at the Penthouse by virtually all of the amazing music legends that played there.

Between 1958 and 1962, the Three Sounds were one of the most prolific artists on Blue Note, recording over ten albums worth of material during those four years. During all that time, the group never changed their style much, concentrating on lightly swinging, lightly soulful mainstream jazz that balanced jazz and pop standards with bluesy originals. As time progressed, they veered closer to soul-jazz, but each of their records sounded quite similiar and were equally satisfying. Black Orchid, their last album for Blue Note in the early ’60s (they would rejoin the label in another four years), was no exception to the rule.

Good Deal is a typically fine record from the Three Sounds, who were beginning to hit their stride when this session was recorded in May of 1959. Like most of their records, it’s laidback – even when the group works a swinging tempo, there’s a sense of ease that keeps the mood friendly, relaxed and mellow. Balancing standards like “Satin Doll,” “Soft Winds” and “That’s All” with bop (“Robbin’s Nest”), calypso (“St. Thomas”) and originals, the Three Sounds cover a lot of stylistic territory, putting their distinctive stamp on each song. It’s very accessible, pleasant soul-jazz and mainstream hard bop, but Gene Harris’ masterful technique means that Good Deal rewards close listening as well.

The album was awarded 4½ stars by Allmusic with Bruce Eder’s review stating “This strange (and strangely compelling) album is the most controversial of all O’Day’s Verve Records releases, popular among O’Day’s hardcore fans for the showcase that the Three Sounds’ near-minimalist accompaniment affords her singing. .. while O’Day sings five songs. She is amazingly restrained and low-key throughout most of her work here … she seems uninspired in terms of any inventiveness, with long stretches of silence where one would have expected her to improvise. What is here is fine … but there’s amazingly little life to the procedings
