Quiet. It is such a precious commodity, and more so today than ever before. In this music from accordionist Vincent Peirani and singer Serena Fisseau, you can actually hear it. It’s right there in the gaps between the notes, perhaps almost more important than the notes themselves. This music is irresistibly light and limpid, and often very cheerful too. It draws its intimate feel from the fact that Peirani and Fisseau are not just a couple artistically, but also in real life. They recorded the tracks of “So Quiet” for their children. And for all other children. And also for any adults out there who’d like to take themselves back in their dreams to a temporary state of childlike innocence – for the time it takes to listen to an album.

For once, here’s a band for which the word “supergroup” is completely appropriate. Swiss vocalist Andreas Schaerer, German pianist Michael Wollny, French accordionist Vincent Peirani and his saxophonist compatriot Emile Parisien are four of the brightest and most charismatic stars in European jazz, now combining their talents in a quartet. This live 2016 recording demonstrates why they are at the very pinnacle of jazz musicians of their generation.

Abrazo. Embrace. A close dance perhaps, but also with the hint of a friendly tussle. Could there be a more fitting metaphor for the duo of accordionist Vincent Peirani and soprano saxophonist Émile Parisien? “It’s like a marriage,” says Peirani. “In the beginning everything’s just great, wonderful, paradise. But of course, after a while, it also becomes challenging, which is quite normal. “Right now, we’re just massively happy playing together.” There can be very few musicians who have got to know each other as well as Peirani and Parisien have. They have clocked up well over 1000 concerts together in the past decade, of which more than 600 have been as a duo. They first met in 2012 as members of drummer Daniel Humair’s quartet, and their very first appearance as a duo was an impromptu late-night club set while touring in Korea. “Une ca-ta-strophe! An unmitigated disaster”… Peirani still remembers it vividly. But shortly later, with the benefit of no jet-lag, and also having done some proper preparation, things did fall properly into place at a festival in France, and one of the outstanding line-ups in European jazz was born. In 2014 their first duo album “Belle Epoque” was released on ACT. From then on they started touring, and were soon playing at the leading clubs and festivals in France and Germany and setting off all over the world – to Asia, Latin America, the USA, Canada and throughout Europe. And also appearing in major classical venues such as the Philharmonie halls in Berlin, Hamburg, Essen and the Musikverein in Vienna. And it was not long before international recognition became established, through prizes such as the Echo Jazz, Les Victoires du Jazz, the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, and numerous awards and ‘best-of’ lists from leading jazz magazines.

To say that Vincent Peirani shook the world of jazz accordion is an understatement… In 2015, his album Living Being further broke down the preconceptions of the instrument. “I wanted to start my own band, in which I needed to feel confident”, explained the accordionist. I wanted to feel like a “family”. That’s why I got in touch with four musicians who are good friends of mine”. Peirani teamed up with Emile Parisien, his partner from the duo Belle Epoque, as well as the bassist Julien Herné, the drummer Yoann Serra and the keyboardist Tony Paeleman… The compositions by Peirani and the covers of Michel Portal and Jeff Buckley make Living Being an incredibly holistic album. These young musicians succeed in closing the gap that sometimes exists between composition and improvisation. Vincent Peirani’s writing is touching and imaginative yet also surprising and elusive. The accordionist is from a generation that draws its inspiration from various musical sources, hence the albums’ richness. Three years later, with the same group members, Living Being II (Night Walker) is also wonderfully rich. Peirani also includes four covers alongside his eight compositions: Bang Bang by Sonny Bono, What Power Art Thou, an extract from King Arthurby Purcell and two hits by Led Zeppelin, Kashmir and Stairway To Heaven. His approach towards this atypical choice of covers is fascinating, as is the way in which his instrument adapts the score of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Living Being II (Night Walker) is principally the success of a group who are in perfect equilibrium. Osmosis at its best.  – Max Dembo

Award-winning French accordionist Vincent Peirani redefines his instrument for the 21st century on Living Being. He frees the accordion from the shackles of stereotype, making it sound like a cornucopia of different instruments from across the musical spectrum. Part of a growing generation of young jazz musicians educated in classical music but listening to and playing rock, pop and electronica, Peirani has carved out a reputation as one of the most innovative and genre defying composer/players working today.

To say that Vincent Peirani has done a lot to change perceptions of the accordion would be an understatement. He joins many others before him who have proved the “piano with straps” can make sweet music; unaffected by the clichés often associated with the instrument. From the very beginning, Peirani has planted himself firmly in the ground of jazz, and as his sound has grown, it’s quickly branched off in different directions. Jokers serves to give his one-of-a-kind sound an extra dimension. The album was recorded at the end of 2021 with guitarist Federico Casagrande and drummer Ziv Ravitz, both of whom are elite musicians. From the start, the trio packs a punch with a cover of This Is the New Shit by Marilyn Manson. The album also contains a cover of another big name in metal: Copy of A by Nine Inch Nails. As if this crazy tsunami of sound wasn’t enough, Vincent Peirani sometimes swaps his accordion for a clarinet (the first instrument he ever learnt), a music box, keyboards or even a glockenspiel!

This duo of superb musicians can simultaneously be highly refined, and yet completely off-the-wall. They are two of the brightest lights of the international firmament of jazz as seen through a European prism. They have also put down a marker with “Tandem”: their stellar collaboration is most definitely going places. The dialogue between Wollny and Peirani constantly brims with ideas, and they also have a perfect way of circling in and out of each other’s way. (more…)
