Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, was composed in the summer of 1909. The piece was premiered on November 28 of that year in New York City with the composer as soloist, accompanied by the New York Symphony Society under Walter Damrosch. The work has the reputation of being one of the most technically challenging piano concertos in the standard classical piano repertoire.

After an absence of twelve years, Vladimir Horowitz’s return to the concert stage was one of New York s most exciting musical events. It was Sunday, May 9, 1965, when the great pianist stepped onto the stage of Carnegie Hall, greeted by a shouting, standing ovation. It was his first public performance since he had left the same stage on February 25, 1953. The recording of his recital would be awarded with three Grammy® Awards and become one of the most successful classical albums. In the months before the historic day of May 9, Horowitz went to Carnegie Hall twice in January, twice in April to play for his wife and close friends, before he decided he was ready to perform publicly.

Columbia Masterworks recorded these intimate private recitals, as well as his subsequent rehearsals for his return in 1966, on tape, and they have remained almost entirely unreleased for more than 50 years.

The legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) won his first praise on his interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto from the composer himself. When Rachmaninoff heard the young Kiev-born pianist play his work shortly after Horowitz’s arrival in New York in 1928, he exclaimed: “He swallowed it whole.” Fifty years later, on September 24, 1978, Horowitz electrified his audience once again with this monumental work. Accompanied by the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, he gave a special performance of this work as part of the celebrations honoring his U.S. debut 50 years earlier. His unforgettable account was recorded live on video and broadcast simultaneously throughout the United States. It was the last time Horowitz played the Third in his lifetime. The work itself, reverently called “Rach 3” by pianists brave enough to tackle its monstrous technical challenges, achieved international celebrity of a different kind in recent years.

This three-CD package from Sony Classical consists of Vladimir Horowitz’s studio recordings of the piano music of Alexander Scriabin, recorded between 1950 and 1976 and previously issued by RCA Victor and Columbia Masterworks, along with several live recordings. As a young pianist in Russia, Horowitz met Scriabin and was swept up in the wave of enthusiasm for his music after the composer’s death in 1915. Yet his development as a Scriabin interpreter didn’t truly start until the 1950s, when he was among the vanguard of pianists reassessing Scriabin’s work, following a period of neglect during the war years. Horowitz became one of Scriabin’s most committed and popular interpreters, and his recordings of the sonatas, preludes, etudes, and poems helped to launch the Scriabin revival which continues today. These remastered recordings reflect the audio reproduction of their times, so the monaural recording of the Sonata No. 3 in F sharp minor, for example, is rather compressed and tinny, while the Preludes and the Étude in C sharp minor have a slightly muffled tone. The stereo Columbia recordings are open and cleaner, and the piano’s tone is much fuller in these tracks from the 1960s and 1970s. The starkest contrasts of sound quality may be heard on the third disc, which offers two performances of the Sonata No. 9, “Black Mass,” where the 1965 rendition is superior to the extremely weak sounding 1953 recording. The historical nature of these recordings may limit the set’s appeal, though Horowitz’s fans will still get plenty of enjoyment from hearing them.
